Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Their love for doom is to much.

you're not wrong, just feels like that easy 'just set the camera and record for a few hours' style has taken over the past few years, which is why I almost never watch unprofessional fridays. Hell, I can barely make time to watch half a quick look these days. Always look forward to the weird stuff they come up with during the end of the year lists is all.

A big reason why so many of their videos have this style now is because it takes much less time and resources to do, and the audience doesn't mind (and in fact I think actively wants) the inherent tradeoffs. I do miss the more produced end-of-year videos from yesteryear but Vinny throwing an axe at dudes in Hitman is a great example of the "unscripted chaos is just as good or better than canned jokes" ethos.

Every year there's a game on a ton of the top 10 lists that I completely ignored and feel like I need to pick up, and this year that game is Event[0]. Probably going to dive in since it's only $12 on Steam right now.

It didn't win though.
Otherwise I agree.

Same.

I was wondering why no one was saying it but then Drew finally did.

I wish he'd push harder for Trico for best character.

Also, I think if he had anyone backing him up Trico could have won.

The risk of going at it alone i guess (unless your Jeff lol). But i think he did a fine job otherwise

Yea it seems the writing is on the wall (bonus points if its in blood), but we'll see for day 5

Still without luck
It really is over though. There is no way in hell (heh) that Alex, Dan, and Jason could champion Overwatch.

Congrats to Doom and Overwatch being first runner up.

The best old games category seems like it's getting really silly based on the picks this year. The Witcher 3 and Mario Maker are both games that were on the best games list in 2015, and it's logical to assume that the same people who liked them in 2015 will go on to play and enjoy them through 2016. To award them again in 2016 just because people continued to play them feels like it trivializes the category. Personally, I think everything in the best games list from the previous year should be disqualified for the old games category in the current year.

The category came down to old games Jeff played vs old games Vinny played and Vinny decided to go to bat for The Witcher over Rondo of Blood and Shenmue.

Not a fan of the image used for "best looking" in the day 2 write up. I wouldn't have given that game best looking but do admit it has a good look and some great visuals but that picture is just drab, boring and not good looking.

Jeff and Brad are gonna push DOOM to the top in GOTY unless we have the rest of the crew argue for another game.

The category was always the games of last year they liked in the new year (either due to continued support/content, missing the GOTY period or neglect) though. The only thing at changed it was the time requirement due to Windjammers winning it.

Also

It was going to be tough when we though it was Jeff and Brad vs everyone else, but at this point it's just over.

Not gonna lie, I'm still hoping for a Jeff vs Brad fight for one of the categories. It's been too civil. Still early in the week tho. Hehe

But that's exactly my point. The Witcher 3 and Mario Maker were not neglected, they were both on the GOTY list from the previous year. In the case of Mario Maker specifically, nothing changed about it other than the fact that Jeff said he continued to play it some in 2016. All I'm saying is that I think the slots in that list should be reserved to recognize games that were either missed or significantly improved from previous years, not winning games from the previous year that continued to be played and/or added some new content. If you follow that to it's logical conclusion, it would mean that eventually the list would just transform into "Best games from last year that are still fun," which is meaningless.

Edit: I guess it doesn't matter because the category is pretty nonsensical regardless. What I'm arguing for would probably actually be best as multiple categories like "Best New Content" and "Most Improved Game." It doesn't make much sense to try to enforce some logical constraints on a category that's really a catchall anyway.

I feel that best style is pretty well defined. Or at least, what it should be. The game with the best look and sound and trimmings that all come together in a cohesive and striking way. Something like Superhot is the definition of Best Style. It isn't the best looking game but everything comes together to be a sleek, cool piece of audio-visual interactive entertainment. It looks cool, the gameplay is slick as fuck, the menus are great, the way it says SUPER HOT, all just oozes a distinct style. I could see arguments made for things like Inside, Abzu, Doom and a bunch of others where it's not just "looks pretty" but how everything comes together with that look.

That category sucked because they were too separated out and uninformed. None of them except Alex played TLG, none besides Vinny played Witcher 3 's DLC's, etc.

The discussions are best when they've all played the same things and are on the same page.

It's just full of awesome moments! Fuck I want some single player DLC. I think they'll pick
Press __ to time travel
. Which is cool, but I think Jeff has oversold that.
My guess for Best Moment/Sequence is
Doom's Intro sequence, which they already brought up during the styyyyyyyle award iIRC...
Man these videos are so long. Who has time to watch this stuff? I'm guessing adults aren't in the target audience these days.
I suppose you can say I'm an adult. I'm retired though, so I have a lot of free time.

Finishing up day two and yeah, Jeff and Brad are going to push doom as number one goty and no one elses opinion will matter in that. Kinda sucks they'll bully that to the top

Not sure where you're getting that idea from. It's already listed as #1 on the personal lists of both Drew and Vinny. I think it might actually be the highest majority pick for GOTY that I've seen in recent years.

So the setup for Hitsmas is kind of amazing? Like, this kind of makes it into a legitimate party game, to the point where I hope the devs take note.

Doom is Vinny and Drew's number 1 and Dan's number 5. So far it's not looking like it's going to take much bullying.

I'm even more confident now that DOOM is winning GOTY.

But I loved that Drew pointed out that Brad's argument against Uncharted 4's visual merits could easily be thrown at DOOM.

Though I'm rooting for Hitman, I think DOOM was locked in on Day one deliberations when someone brought up the multiplayer and Jeff just laughed it off. nothing else stands a chance, now. These staff lists just further cement it.
