Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

I feel like doom is this year shadow of Mordor for me. I think it a good game but I just don't see what the bomb crew sees in that game.

So the setup for Hitsmas is kind of amazing? Like, this kind of makes it into a legitimate party game, to the point where I hope the devs take note.

Contracts is kinda like that. Plus, it verifies that the hit is achievable. Maybe they could do something more interesting, presentation wise...

The legacy of DOOM and how iD made a new DOOM that is a actually good is remarkable. It isn't my GOTY, but everything about it was made with a high amount of polish that is rare to see. Everything about it works well, besides the multiplayer.

It's a much better game imo but only slightly less forgettable. Outside of the brilliant intro everything kind of blends together in a mush of combat arenas with awesome music and gunplay but nevertheless, it's kind of a one-note game. It's a great fucking note, but I'd kind of heard enough when it ended.

Jeff has to be stopped, he has too much power and too bad of opinions!

Jeff is one of those rare people that I really like and respect, but disagree with almost all of his opinions. Just polar opposite to mine, but I like hearing him talk about them, he does it in a way that doesn't grate at all. I did actually agree when he was giving Fallout 4 a hard time last year though.

It's a pure gameplay thing for me, it's like I enter a battle trance whenever I pick up a mouse and keyboard, it feels so incredibly refined and visceral, couple that with the kind of subversive story it really is the best GAME of the year in my opinion.

It's one of the only games in the last decade that I've continued to boot up month after month just to play 15-20 minutes of it here and there because I enjoy the gameplay so much. The only other games that fit in the same category for me are Bayonetta 1/2, for exactly the same reason. There's just something about the gameplay loop that feels so rewarding if you like fast-paced skill-driven combat.

Edit: Perfect example: I just bought myself a gsync monitor and G900 mouse, and after booting up Doom to "test" them I proceeded to accidentally play it for several hours on a new save. It's got its hooks in me.

I don't know why people think Dan will side with Overwatch over DOOM

If anything I think he will push Hitman. I'll be surprised if there's even an argument against DOOM winning. The real battle is going to be 2-10

While I agree with you that the gameplay is great for me it just overstayed it's welcome.

Cross post from the OT since it's more relevant here;

Anybody kind of...not feeling the GOTY podcasts so far? It's hard to put my finger on it but it feels really low energy compared to years past. Maybe it's that Alex/Jeff are the only ones that seem to have played a lot of stuff enough to actually talk about it.

edit; should say, the videos have been great so far. I'll take more of these over skits any year.

I think that's a problem, though. I guess you could call me hypocritical for not faulting Overwatch for lacking a single-player campaign, but I think it's relevant to judge a game based on what it attempted to do. Doom may have had a great single-player campaign, but the multiplayer was generally panned and did not sustain a large population at all. Either make the multiplayer good, or don't bother at all. As is, it seemed tacked on to attempt to reduce trade-ins of the game. Something about that just kinda rubs me the wrong way when it is given GOTY consideration.

If Overwatch had a mediocre single player campaign that wouldn't make it suddenly a worse game. I don't see why Doom should be faulted for a tacked on multiplayer mode when the rest of the game is fantastic.

I honestly did the same thing when I bought my G900 a few months ago, small world.

Overwatch was #2 on Dan's personal list and he even admitted it was almost his #1. Doom was #5 for him.

Basically, Dan knows Stardew has no chance at the top five, so if he puts energy into arguing for a game in the late stages, it'll probably be Overwatch.

I don't really think that matters if the single player is still their favorite thing they've played this year. Also since ID didn't create the multiplayer portion it seems like it was pushed in by Bethesda and I feel even less bad about it.

Vinny and Dan have been pretty quiet, and Jason and Drew might as well not even be there. So far it's just been Jeff, Alex, and Brad mostly. Maybe it'll pick up later on.

But he's not going to side with Overwatch over Hitman.

Overwatch might be higher on Dan's list, but Overwatch will not be part of the final discussion of #1 vs #2.

Yeah, I just don't understand the mentality behind people thinking DOOM vs Overwatch is an inevitability. If anything I think there will be conflict over DOOM vs Hitman. If Overwatch makes the top 3 it'll be at a distant third.

So far, there has not been two strong opposing forces (like Fallout 4 last year).

Introducing the 2015 2016 Giant Bomb Game of the Year thread! Here we can have the raging debate about how giantbomb.com game of the year awards! You can find last years thread here, ostenibly better than this year. Maybe we should just go to that one. It smells nicer. But mine has sulfur, so that makes it...tastier.

It's been a tumultous year at Giant Bomb! Mario party has been slain, Dan Ryckert has been banished to the East, Brad got a sweet looking haircut, Jeff showed off his cat, Jason finally beat Dan at Street Fighter, Vinny found santa and brutally murdered him, and Alex trucked all year long. We also lost Austin Walker to Vice Gaming, but he's still with us in spirit. Luckily for us, we can all gab and gossip about their hot top picks for this year here in this thread~

Please make sure to use spoiler tags on discussion of their picks for this week. People won't be able to pour over the hot deliberations all at once, so let's spoiler tag it in this thread, atleast till Monday. Thank you.

This year we have video podcasts going up for the deliberations! Now we get to see Jeff clothesline Brad for his love of Hitman, Dan throw chairs and TKO Jason, whilst Drew looks from above whilst flying his plane, watching the sweat and steam rise up from the rigorous discussions. It'll be a joy to watch Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel earn it's well earned spot within the list, because that is indubitably the best fighting game in years, and we'll get to watch it live this year around. The battle rages on starting tomorrow

Thank you! I haven't listened yet, but was curious what talk happened.

Rafe, a cartoon villain, over Reaper, the ultimate anti-villain? And Tracer Core over Tracer herself? And that winner without any mention of Overwatch whatsoever?! This is just wrong. So very wrong.

Also, XCOM 2, most disappointing? Unless it's about performance--which I would sympathise with--I dunno how it ended up here. It is an incredible sequel to an already incredible game, which in itself is incredibly impressive.

Incredible!

Wow that sucks. Why would you play 8 hours of a game you don't like?

He's not alone. I did the same thing with The Witness. I really really really wanted to like that game way more than I did. I wanted there to be more. I finished the "story" just to see if I was missing anything even though I wasn't enjoying myself. Unfortunately I wasn't.

I can't believe they actually picked fucking
helmut kruger
lmao.

They didn't play Cold Steel 2.

Do you listen at 1.5 or 2X speed? That helps.

Those guys speak way too fast for that to be comfortable. My problem is often I'll start listening and then do other stuff and I won't focus on what they're saying.

Any TLG spoilers in the character discussion?

So glad No Man's Sky received Most Disappointing. I know a lot of people thought SFV would get it but like Jason said, at least the core fighting gameplay is really fun to play, which I can't say about any of the half baked gameplay in No Man's Sky.

For me, when it comes to GOTY, the highs mean more than the lows. The last time I felt the way I did when I was playing Doom was when I played RE:4. That means way more than a subpar multiplayer effort and the Snapmap stuff is actually pretty solid.

Doom has fundamentally changed the way I look at shooters. To me, it marks the same sort of milestone evolutionary leap that Halo and COD:4 made. It is a confident and exceptional rethinking of a 20 year old genre.

Still listening to day 1:

Dan: "What makes [Nitroplus] have more style than other anime fighters?"

-Jeff and Jason simultaneously: "Super Sonico"

Alright I paused just as Vinny started to talk about a character from the Witcher 3 Blood and Wine DLC. How spoilery does this part get?

EDIT: Nevermind I just fast forwarded that part.

Jeff has to be stopped, he has too much power and too bad of opinions!

It's easy to stop Jeff - just bring well-reasoned and compelling examples. He went from "I can't see that game winning Best Looking at all" to conceding after Brad reminded him of some of the visuals and animations throughout.

Inside was still one giant pile of mediocre though

I enjoyed my limited time with Inside but graphically it kind of felt like an updated flashback or another world - had that floaty smooth animation style which was pretty but in no way was it up with some of the games on that list

I feel like this year's discussions are hampered by the fact that there are fewer "reviewers" (i.e. no Patrick/Austin) than in the previous years. Too often only one of them, if someone at all, has actually played the game that is discussed extensively. This makes the discussions often quite shallow since they have rely on the opinions of the person that actually played the game so heavily. Add to that the fact that there haven't really been any "big" games that relied on story or any big design innovations, but rather almost all stand out titles this year that at least most of the crew has played were mostly gameplay focused games, which is kind of hard to have a lengthy compelling discussion about.

Rami's list is fascinating stuff. The format is my favourite of the lists I've looked at so far--very thorough, thoughtful, and insightful. Like, I had no idea about his history with Destiny: Rise of Iron...

That dude is a treasure.

I really wish Hitman was their GOTY so they'd have the same GOTY as me but Doom looks like it's starting to run away with it.

But if you look at the DOOM content to Hitman content, Hitman is their golden goose. The Hitman videos have been fucking hilarious (but very irritating to watch as a seasoned player myself. You don't how many times I've yelled at Brad and Dan through my screen).

The Hitmas video is Video of the Year so far.

HELMUT FUCKING KRUGER
winning Best New Character was hilarious if you've seen the quick look.

Ever since Alex's EL stream, he's just bossing around.

Good on him. Quite frankly he has the most experience after Jeff in terms of being in the industry, number of reviews done and he's also quite clearly the most skilled in general at playing video games. About time he pushed his weight around.
