Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

I think the joke is lost for people like me who didn't watch every single Hitman video and didn't play the game yet. I'll be checking out the game sometime this week.

I haven't watched every single hitman video. I just think you need to get Giant bomb in order to understand why sometimes jokes win a category.

Yikes, that sounds rough. I think it just perfectly towed the difficulty line for me that I was nearly always challenged, but never had to look up a solution.

Have you tried the experimental VR mode? I had to refund The Witness when it first came out because 10 minutes would give me intense motion sickness. I want to pick it up again but don't want to vomit when I play.

Sheesh man, at least you can admit you have a problem most can't. You should use the game as self therapy. Get a good mentality going, put your chin down, and trudge through it. Imo the best part of puzzle games is that a ha moment.

That's not really how dealing with depression works.

I don't think there's a "mode" so much as people have hacked in or used injection software to fake it. I have no interest in those kinds of VR experiences.

Everyone's different I face things head on, it works for me. There's always problems best you can do is find a solution. I can agree it's not the right choice for many but I can also say with confidence inaction is the worst choice.

I apologize, I will no longer derail the thread with this.

Man they were harsh toward XCOM 2.

I mean, that game has an 88 Metascore, and they're all acting like it's the worst of the worst dogshit.

This really surprised me. XCOM 2 is in my top 5 for the year. I never had any problems with it besides some slowdown during the travel scenes. It was a great game.

ReCore was an interesting one as well. I really wanted ReCore to be good, but there were a lot of signs before it came out that it was not going to be a great game. I guess I didn't have my hopes up, so I enjoyed it a lot for what it was and hope it gets a sequel.

Joke pick for best character kind of annoys me. Ethan from CoDIW should have been on the top 3 and Trico should have won IMO.

And Gaunter O'Dimm from Witcher 3 DLC if they were counting that.

It made me feel so stupid at every turn, and once I looked up the solution for one puzzle and knew I'd have never figured it out, the whole thing was broken. Still spent like 8 more hours trying to make myself like it, instead of getting a refund like I should've done.

I'm a pretty depressed, self-loathing person and that game just amplified those aspects of my personality.

Wow that sucks. Why would you play 8 hours of a game you don't like?

This year is not the year for forcing yourself to play games. There's too much variety out there. Just play what you like. Don't give a shit at what you're "supposed" to like. At the end of day, you play videogames because you enjoy them.

I love the Witness. I'm sooo close to "finishing" it (not 100%). I took a picture of the puzzle I couldn't figure out last night, and have been drawing on it in Paint at work trying to solve it.

Ha, I did the same thing when I played it at launch. Had days where I was more thinking about the witness then actual school work :) The game is probably my goty. It is excellent.

I think the only thing I've really disagreed with them on is Street Fighter V. I can see where they're coming from in terms of being disappointing and being a hot mess, as boy are there a bunch of issues surrounding that game, but as a casual fan I still really like playing it. I got it during the first week of release, well aware of the issues and shortcomings, and kind of just accepted it. It's a game I've been returning to throughout the year, and I can thank it for being the catalyst that helped my cousin and I to start hanging out again.

I also rather play it than Street Fighter 4. 4 just never clicked for me, even during the brief time I went back to it prior to 5's release. Prior to 5, when I wanted to play SF I just played Third Strike or Alpha 3.

There were 3 games which 'ruined' other games for me, meaning every other game I subsequently played felt insufficient or shallow in some way.

Guess what they were?

Having some fun trying to guess the top 5. Gotta a feeling it will be:
Doom
Hitman
Overwatch
Titanfall 2
The Witness

Maybe switch out Superhot for Titanfall.

Man these videos are so long. Who has time to watch this stuff? I'm guessing adults aren't in the target audience these days.

Best Looking Game:

DOOM looks nice but it's the most boring choice. Inside was a fine winner, but I really think The Witness did super unique stuff visually to the point where its look and art were part of the game design. I haven't seen Uncharted myself beyond the QL.

HStallion

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Lol some of these lists are pretty sad and not for the game choices but the reasons why. I mean I get they liked some of the games but some of the break downs are,"This game is AWESOME!" in how they tell you why its a good game or made it to their list. Seems like for every Will Smith or Rami Ismail who go into detail and in depth on why things were chosen you've got some other lists it looked like they typed up in ten minutes.

There's just something about the witness...I'm not sure if it quite fits into best looking, but it's probably game that I would most like to look at if that makes sense. The world they made is incredible.

I mean, long videos aren't really a new thing for Giant Bomb.

For me it just means I'll have plenty of Giant Bomb stuff to watch over the next month or two whenever I have downtime. I don't need to watch it all as it comes out.

Games being argued against because they aren't 60fps in a best looking category is fucking stupid and it doesn't belong in the conversation. A game shouldn't be argued against because it's 30fps and this other game is 60fps a best looking game's argument points should be. I felt at times it was a GAF argument that 30fps is unplayable.

And it's not the first category where they brought other elements of the game into a category where that element has absolutely nothing to do with it. And the Best new character argument where
Helmet won. A fucking meme wins over actual characters with actual character development.
That made me immediately not care about the rest of the winners for the rest of the week.
Helmet should of been taken off the list immediatly

Dang, that doesn't look like any line puzzle I've ever seen. Been hemming and hawing about whether to pick up The Witness in the Steam sale, seeing an example like that of how advanced the puzzles can actually get might just be enough to push me over the edge.

I know what you mean. It's not "best styyyle", but "best looking" also seems to not quite encapsulate it. Best art design, maybe? I just love the hell out of it.

SHEIKH-A-LEIKH

(How ya axe it, Vinny?)
Would ya throw it from the front?

(How ya axe it, Vinny?)
Would ya toss it from the back?

(How ya axe it, Vinny?)
Crawl down the pipe like dat!

The very last puzzles are all like that (in terms of difficulty, not mechanics), pretty satisfying.

It's a good thing they exist in podcast form, then!

Teacher here. School holidays help.

I have it on while I work.

What many adults lack in free time they make up for in commutes, which at least helps for the podcasts.

I was refering to the specialtacular's

Are you that busy during the holidays?

Holiday's were last weekend, and next weekend for most people I know. I don't know anyone off during the week.

Best new character
Goofy as hell winner, but after watching the Hitmas stream last night I can't really argue with it, even though I'm pretty sure that video was recorded after these deliberations. Spirit of the award and all

Looking at something like that out of context probably makes it seem harder than it is. These endgame puzzles are far from the most difficult for me. That one in particular is combining some of the easiest concepts (Tetris pieces, dot separation, colors).

I can figure them out, but I still couldn't explain the color "rules."

It sounds like you may have run up against a puzzle that you weren't supposed to be able to solve yet if you were early on. There are quite a few puzzles in that game that you have to walk away from because the game hasn't taught you how to solve them yet.

Doom winning Best Looking is just... I'm not saying it looks bad, but outside of the enemies and how good it runs it all just looked very generic to me. Also, how is no one on the podcast calling out Brad for using arguments that could be lobbed back at the games he's championing? Drew kinda did by calling out Doom saying that he felt the same way about it as Brad did about UC4.

Ugh... Doom is gonna be their GOTY, isn't it? I like Doom, it's definitely in my top ten, but it feels like they're just blind to a lot of its shortcomings. Especially given the categories it got pushed into today. (Yeah, I'm looking at you Best New Character)

Wait until you see John Carpenter's list.

you're not wrong, just feels like that easy 'just set the camera and record for a few hours' style has taken over the past few years, which is why I almost never watch unprofessional fridays. Hell, I can barely make time to watch half a quick look these days. Always look forward to the weird stuff they come up with during the end of the year lists is all.

It didn't win though.
Otherwise I agree.

Aw, wished they would have spent more time trying out new or different games on the VR video, spent a bit too much time on soundcloud and google earth, still, it was fun!

Most Disappointing discussion was great. They said everything I thought about for those games in the list that I played.

Of course, but when all I've seen of the game are some of the earlier puzzles and how basic they are, and knowing HOW MANY puzzles are in the game, it's reassuring to see there is actually a good amount of progression to them.
