Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Fuck me I really need to go back to The Witness. I never even did the windmill section and I know I had the tools to finish that section before I quit.

I doubt Titanfall will even crack the top 5.

If anyone can do it, it's Jeff, Brad, and their general feelings on Overwatch.

I must be crazy... I played TF2 during the free weekend, it was good but I definitely do not have the love for it that I see all over the place. Would much rather play BF1 or OW.

Titanfall scratches that "feel like a badass" itch that Battlefield and Overwatch just don't for me. I like them all for completely different reasons, but if I had to order them I put Titanfall on top.

Definitely with Vinny on the backwards compatibility...
ME2 was super good and definitely deserved to be on that list
. That being said the final list is pretty good.

I was getting the impression that his main knock against it appeared to be similar to the issue that people have with supposed "Walking Simulators" in that there's not much substance in the gameplay, and, to him at least, the rest of what that game does, doesn't really make up for that.

I do find that odd, because wasn't he a fan of Gone Home?

Either way, it seems like he just got really pissed in the context of this specific discussion for best moment, and I 100% agree with him that both of those Titanfall 2 moments were way better than the blob moment, but hey, that's just me.

That seemed to me to be what he was getting at, yeah. Gone Home, though, feeds you a story and there are characters to follow and discover and become attached to, whereas Inside has none of that.

I also agree about the Titanfall 2 moments, but the correct moment still ended up winning, imo.

I haven't listened to today's cast yet (and I don't know how much of Best Moments I'll watch because of the spoiler minefield) but that is a really weird pick for The Witness. Like, yeah, it's cool, but "discovering the first use of a major side mechanic" doesn't really feel like something worth celebrating, especially because it's so signposted. I don't know why, say, the Challenge or the Room (you know, the one with
the videos
) weren't better moments for that game.

Also, in many ways the real best moment of The Witness is "figuring out that one fucking puzzle you were stumped on for hours," which is going to be different for everyone. So not really something you could give an award to anyways.

But it's not 'so signposted' - you're nudged towards it in a very subtle way at one single point in the game. If you realized it before that point and figured it out (which is how I discovered it, and it was incredible), then more power to you. One of the main reasons why that moment is so affecting and awesome is that you've been passing by and seeing these things the entire game that, if you haven't actually solved on up until that point, maybe seemed something was weird about, or there was a little more to - and, in fact, there was.

I am so baffled by their comments on the Witness. Having started that game yesterday,
after the first tutorial area shows you how the puzzles work you eventually have to notice some of the giant circles that are super overt in the environment with a convenient line coming out of it. I had assumed the river was still part of the tutorial to explicitly show you environmental puzzles exist

Best moment. Did anyone else do what Dan did and
completely miss all of the enviromental puzzles in The Witness? That absolutely floored me. Considering how that game works, and the mindset you have to be in to progress in that game, that sounds absolutely insane. My first thought it "Well, that's Dan for you." but I'm wondering if anyone else managed to actually finish the game without doing a single one of those.

Finally something we can agree on ;). Stardew's OST is amazing.

Titanfall gets better as you put more time into it because most people don't fully exploit it's mechanics until after a good amount of time. There's a hell of a lot more going on than you'd think just starting out.

It was nice to see Vinny and Jeff get pissed by what got cut. The two old guards will soon have their revenge.

Skate 3 deserves to be in the top 3 because it actually benefits from being backwards compatible in a unique way. The Skate Reel servers went down years ago when meant that all of the user replays and screenshots were gone, and the "Xbox record that" functionality and shit completely revives that aspect of the game.

Giant Bomb aren't the most observant folk.

Feels crazy to me that
Inside
made the Best Moment list.
I thought that bit was neat but nothing special. But I seem to be in the minority who didn't think that game was anything special beyond the art style anyway.

That was their point.
Everyone comes to the realization at different points in their playthrough. You just happened to realize it early.
That's why it's so effective.

If I have played through (not 100% of the puzzles, not all lasers even) The Witness, is it possible that I would have missed whatever they bring up for "best moment"? I am aware of the
environmental puzzles
if that's what it is.

Basically I'm trying to determine if I should skip the segment or not.

The sand section pretty much gave that away for me with how the steps worked. I still got a great ah ha moment when I found stuff hidden in the world, but ya...it didn't take that long to figure out the environment also had puzzles to solve.

Yeah I think it's odd that they picked games for that list that are easily playable on PC. They waved it off with some weak reasoning.

No that's exactly the moment they talk about, so you're good.

Skate 3 wins most YouTube game

Great point, but it felt like a stealth GOTG discussion to me.

The only reason The Witness is featured at all on my personal top 10 list is because of those environmental puzzles. The idea that Dan enjoyed The Witness so much without ever having solved any of those is... man...

THOSE ENVIRONMENTAL PUZZLES ARE SO GOOD.

Brad's forever love for Geometry Wars is pretty tired (like, everyone has that one game that just clicks with them an never gets old; mine definitely isn't Geometry Wars) but it deserves to be on that list because it's definitely a game worth having available on your Xbox One. I just don't think that list deserves to exist?

Gotcha, I can appreciate that. I just played it during that weekend so definitely didn't get super into it. That's cool though, for me OW and BF1 definitely scratches that itch.

I thought Titanfall 2's campaign wasn't as good as some of the other ones that came out this year, but
I was mad about the SEER kit being cut for the Inside moment, and I really liked Inside. Busting out the Titanfall 1 smart pistol was the only moment in that game that made me go "Fuck yeah, let's do this!"

Maybe I did something super out of sequence which is definitely possible in The Witness, but this is one of the first things I came across after exploring the world and I just assumed it was your big clue that
there are environmental puzzles

During the best moment discussion, regarding TF2 and Dishonored 2
It's great for Vinny to bring up the Heroes Gemini fact that they already did it, but it tickles my funny bone they ignored Dishonored 2 because they did the same thing iirc?

I'd recommend going back to it when you can. I didn't have much fun at first, but knew based on my experience with the first game that it would get better. Breakneck pace in that game, but once you're comfortable with the flow of it the game really shines.

That game was barely out when these deliberations were recorded, I don't think any of them had played much of it at this time other than Jason.

I own Dishonored 2 but I haven't played it yet. I think Dishonored 2 takes it even further because it's a skill that's at your disposal if I'm not mistaken which makes it even better that the other moment in Titanfall 2 stuck for as long as it did on the list.

New Deus Ex and new Dishonored kinda getting shafted this year.

I played and enjoyed Dishonored 2, but I can see how some folks might overlook it or find it forgettable.

Deus Ex on the other hand... Even as a fan of the series I passed it up for $15 the other day. Just looks way too similar to the other Mankind Whatevered and uninspired. No thanks. So much stellar stuff to play this year.

If I'm not mistaken he hasn't been on the site for a few years. People getting mad about his list always made me laugh.

He did a list last year, it was the year before that he was missing.

The fucked up part was

the year he missed out

He went low and said something like 'If Ryan was there it'd be different' or something of that sort. It was fucked up. And I imagine the only reason he's still providing lists, is because there is that potential of him using Ryan like that, and there will be a part of the base that latches on to that.
