Giant Bomb GoTY 2016- Agent 47, take out that Doom Marine

Definitely with Vinny on the backwards compatibility...
ME2 was super good and definitely deserved to be on that list
. That being said the final list is pretty good.
As much as I love the stories and outright hilarious moments on the podcast, the core Giantbomb crew (aka Jeff and Brad) have some pretty objectionable ranging to outright abominable opinions on games.

How the fuck do you call Red Dead Redemption a bad game? How?!?

Maybe I did something super out of sequence which is definitely possible in The Witness, but this is one of the first things I came across after exploring the world and I just assumed it was your big clue that
there are environmental puzzles

yeah that clue is given to you as a last telling to say 'hey!! if you've made it all the way to the mountain and haven't figured this out yet, here you go!" Jeff even mentions it on today's podcast. but like you said, anything can be done out of order. even if discovering the existence of these isn't a surprise, i still think there's a great moment in finding each one of them. i think the game uses your sense of perspective in lots of interesting and unique ways, especially when you start seeing the lines in literally everything the game has to offer
finding them inside the videos was an awesome moment for me

New Deus Ex and new Dishonored kinda getting shafted this year.

Oh man, as a huge fan of Human Revolution, this new one just felt so uninspired and bland. Prague was a boring ass city, and the whole segregation thing with the androids made zero goddamn sense and and wasn't effective at all. If I have metal arms, why would people with bad human arms be trying to front on me? I can just throw them on top of a roof or something? Like, just have actual racism in your game?!? rather than this inexplicable analouge

Yeah thats because theyre people. You can find equally goofy ass opinions in this very thread

Haha I can definitely agree, Jeff's opinions are just crazy, never know what he will/won't like. But you can find crazier opinions in most topics here on GAF, to be fair :)

The fucked up part was

the year he missed out

He went low and said something like 'If Ryan was there it'd be different' or something of that sort. It was fucked up. And I imagine the only reason he's still providing lists, is because there is that potential of him using Ryan like that, and there will be a part of the base that latches on to that.

Yikes, I missed out on that. That's real shitty.

I'll vouch for not treating RDR as the second coming that a lot of people do, but it's a fine open world game. I will say it's great at telling a story, but the gameplay itself didn't blow me away. I thought there wasn't enough stuff to do in the world, and the controls, both on horse and in combat, were just wonky enough to keep me from being fully into it. That said, there are some banger missions, and it tells an incredible story (better that almost every GTA).

But I wouldn't put it even in my top 10 of the PS3/360 generation.

I doubt Titanfall will even crack the top 5.

Jeff Got COD: AW to number 4 on the overall list in 2014 when he was the only staff member to put the game on his top 10. Assuming that Titanfall 2 is Jeff's top game (which I'm beginning to think is the case after he attacked Gears for having bad Multiplayer and has already said that Doom's multiplayer was shit), he could easily get it high on the list, especially when multiple staffers have put the game on their lists

I liked what Vinny said in today's deliberations... there's a big difference between not liking a game and not understanding why other people like it. I think for the most part the staff gets it right by saying, "this game is just not for me," but the way that Jeff outright shits on RDR constantly is kinda ridiculous.

Jeff's domineering input is making these less fun each year for me. There are so many instances where he flat our refuses to acknowledge a game due to some irrational hatred for it or pushes way too hard for a game that nobody else agrees with. He's also the team member I see the most self-contradiction from every year. His picks seem a lot more emotional and heavy-handed than those of everyone else in the group. People complain nonstop about Brad arguing until other people give up, but without that foil to Jeff the proceedings would be far less interesting or dynamic.

RDR is the poster child for XB1 backwards compatibility!!!

*flips table*

Exactly my point

Dishonored 1 and HR got shafted too so I'm not surprised. None of them seem to be into either series.

In the 2010 GOTY podcast jeff said he only played 4 hours of it then so I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't played anymore since then

Yeah I myself didn't play either of Dishonored 2 or new Deus Ex, lol. Just surprised that competent sequels to notable games aren't even getting lip service, really.

Austin Walker's talked up new Deus Ex some, and Idle Thumbs, too. Giant Bomb isn't even bringing them up here.

I like Red Dead okay but it has a ton of problems with its story (so much padding) and some obnoxiously terrible characters so I can imagine why people would dislike it. It actually amazes me more that people think its the best game ever.

that year he missed out was the first year I really followed GB, and the only thing I know of Zodiac(Because I wasn't familiar with his history or Ryans) is that he brought up that lowball comment.

I just remember him getting banned from the site. Which, rightfully so, but man, I have some bad memories from around that time on the site.

Jeff called Witcher 3 a bad game at the beginning of the GotY podcasts lol.
That's just his taste.

I played and enjoyed Dishonored 2, but I can see how some folks might overlook it or find it forgettable.

Deus Ex on the other hand... Even as a fan of the series I passed it up for $15 the other day. Just looks way too similar to the other Mankind Whatevered and uninspired. No thanks. So much stellar stuff to play this year.

Deus Ex was my game of the year.

What would you say if I told you that many people would actually be amazed at the games that you think are the best ever?

I'm pretty sure he also raved about it for multiple weeks on the podcasts after it was released. He's the biggest flip-flopper on the staff, based on whatever he thinks would be neat to rant about.

Edit: Raved is probably too strong, but he was definitely positive about it before inexplicably deciding he hated it half a year later.

I'll never have a bad thing to say about Jeff. I absolutely disagree with him sometimes, but he plays so many games, and has such a vast knowledge of the industry from various angles that he's banked up pretty much an infinite amount of slack from me.

Besides, at the core of the debates is always Brad and Jeff, and if Jeff seems self-contradictory or a bit stubborn at times, it's simply a preservation tactic he had to adapt from years of debating Brad. Jeff will never in his heart stop avenging Saints Row 3.

Isn't the entire OG Geometry Wars part of the new Geometry Wars? Why would you need to play the 360 version if there's a native Xbox One version of the game?

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Drew's FF6 joke sample during 'best music' was easily the best piece of music played in that ENTIRE segment.

Though I now have Brigador on my Steam wishlist and I just bought Virginia because Vinny and Alex are right, that score sounded crazy moody and I want to try that game.

Also bummer that BF1 didn't get a mention. No one really played much of it, but its music is incredible and I am NOT a MP competitive guy at all.

Cause GW3 is different (it makes you pick up multiplier in the new mode) so its automatically bad /s

Agreed wholeheartedly but Terra's theme is easily one of my favorite pieces of music ever so I am biased haha.

Are you sure? He really doesn't like if something doesn't immediately feel great to play. That's his most important metric for a game, I think.

Would surprise me if he praised The Witcher 3 then.

That too. People need to stop taking Jeff (or anyone) saying something is a "bad game" so literally. Clearly, he just means he doesn't like it.

I do like that Vinny, Alex, and Brad pushed back on him for that bullshit especially during best moments when he tried to go against everyone else and say that his opinion was the only right one.

Too bad they didn't bring up the fact that the Let It Die soundtrack includes tracks from ~104 Japanese bands, most of which are titled/include in the title 'Let It Die'. Not that it would've won, but that's preeeeeetty damn cool.

Not really. It's like a fake version using that new engine they made. Definitely not the same.

You're not really a fan of the series if you skip a sequel to Human Revolution that is just as good if not better, and came out five years later.

The best part about Dan and The Witness is that during the initial
environmental
discussion he was nodding his head along like he was in on the puzzle twist.

I'll never have a bad thing to say about Jeff.

No offense, but if that's the case then why would anyone place any value in your opinion? If you can't be objectively critical of something/someone at all then it stands to reason that your bias is far too strong for meaningful discussion.

People need to stop taking Jeff (or anyone) saying something is a "bad game" so literally. Clearly, he just means he doesn't like it.

But that's not what he says, and it's a very important distinction when you're discussing criticism of any media/art. If you think it's a bad game, say that, but if you just don't personally care for it then have the maturity/objectivity to stay that instead. It's not that difficult to make a minimum effort to rise above petty bickering and present your opinions maturely.

Kind of really agree and it I think it largely keeps Dan, Drew, and Jason REAL quiet, which is too bad. Ryan Davis was always perfect at keeping Jeff a bit more grounded...

Gotcha, I can appreciate that. I just played it during that weekend so definitely didn't get super into it. That's cool though, for me OW and BF1 definitely scratches that itch.

I feel like, for me anyway, the amount of enjoyment you get from Titanfall has a lot to do with how much of the CoD gameplay loop you still enjoy, as both games have a similar feel.

Which I think is why I like the game so much.

Am I asking anyone to? Is anyone here asking anyone to?

You trust whoever's opinions you want, my man, and that includes the people at Giant Bomb. I couldn't give two shits lol.

I agree with Jeff on the
underwater girl and water-breathing
parts of Inside not really making enough sense, but man...I kind of feel like we played two different games.

It definitely felt reminiscent of that loop to me... and honestly at this point I am over that loop haha. Played way too much CoD over the years. Played the first TFall pretty heavily for a month as well.

And yet he conceded his favorite moment from one of, if not his number one, favorite games of the year against a moment from a game he actively dislikes.
