Patrick is the worst air pianist, but a very respectable air guitarist.

I enjoyed the stream, while I had (and really have) no interest in the game, what Patrick said at the end about it being a swan song for a once popular genre actually makes me want to play it. In this medium, we very rarely see genres outright die. We have things which died because they were unable to ever transfer over to 3D well, brawlers (ironically I've been playing GodHand for the first time, the only good 3D brawler I know of), the traditional 'run and jumps' 2D platformers (Mirror's Edge is pretty much that in 3D, but a long time after Mario 64 did it's thing). Car combat was really big at one point, and now I can't really believe they brought it back at this kind of level, I don't expect we'll see that again. It makes it tempting to be involved in that death.

I think Gary totally had a point when he mentioned that the car combat idea (and the arena combat idea in general I guess) had simply been caught up in the froth of the expanding design horizons of this gen. Car combat and arena combat games and whatnot seem to now have been subsumed into open-world games. And without the perk-style progression that COD4 popularized the multiplayer simply isn't going to be as enticing to most people, especially anyone who's young enough to think of the original Twisted Metals as being games that existed before "their time".

Like everybody's been saying, this is totally the swan song for a certain type of design/product/price point combination. But as a downloadable title with slightly less scope, I really see no reason games like this can't still be made.

vehicle (car) combat = mecha / tank games. Sub-genre of third person shooter if anything.

EDIT: if by brawler you mean Belt scrolling games like Final Fight, then God Hand hasn't much to do with that. Just another 3D Action game (though a very weighted one with unusual controls). If anything the closest link would be the Yakuza games I think.

Listening to the Bombcast This Year episode for 2008 and Ryan has that bloody Gamespot voice still. It weirds me the fuck out, it just sounds so strange compared to how he talks now.

I was just about to make a post about the whole 'This Year' thing. I love it! I love the the musical segments! I'm at the point where they are officially announcing Brad and Vinny!

Didn't realize how much Alex was there at the beginning.

Need a gif of that ending... stat!

I disagree. GodHand is lots of short combat stages where all you do is beat people up, auto aligned to enemies, you can even pick up those traditional brawler weapons like pipes and bats.

Yakuza games have brawler mechanics, but they're within an RPG.

This is a cool part of the game and they're just talking about some movies and klingons non-stop. It's not super serious but, man, they just keep going.

It's too bad The Darkness gave no indication at all of what you had to do while your dead girlfriend was telling you what to do.

She said "Don't fight", not "put your guns away". How are you supposed to figure that out? How many FPSes even give you the option to holster all your weapons?

Without ANY INDICATION of what to do... assuming you don't read the text on the screen.

Oh, Brad.

Maybe if he'd stopped doing exactly the opposite of what the game said, he would have eventually worked out what it meant.

You play like 1/5th of that entire game with your guns holstered. Assuming you can actually shoot the darklings that come at you, I believe it doles out more and more hints not to shoot it and to try to "embrace" it.

Maybe it's something you could figure out if you hadn't put the game down in 2007 and then come back to it at the very end with Patrick and Dave loudly discussing a hypothetical Klingon movie right next to you, then.

I think I might just watch the archive version of this, and skip ahead a bit when it gets dull/frustrating. Man, what a weird game.
