I loved the stream and the fact they played all those games. Kudos GB for that.

Minor quibble but the fact they didn't know that custom soundtracks are in all games kinda surprised me. Between that and the fact they didn't know that you touch the screen to get the PSP options when playing PSP games made me think they didn't really research it all the way. It's not my job to know these things and yet I do.

Again I applaud them for doing five effin hours on the thing, enthusiastic or not, that's more than Sony's half-baked attempt.

I remember that episode. I tried to listen to it a while back, but the staff were so uninformed about the specifications of the Zojirushi thermos. I've seen a lot of coverage about the vessel to be excited for it, on youtube - and proper websites, I also watched DJ's livestream. I had already planned on buying one, wich is why I tuned into GB, since I'm getting one. Even tough potential thermos-users might not be Giant Bomb's target audience, they should atleast try to figure out what the thing can and will do.

I mean, when they say they have 30 years of experience, we listeners should be able to expect them to have basic knowledge about what they're doing. But they didn't even mention something as basic as the one-touch button for easy pour operation. I didn't hear anything about the interior nonstick coating either. Sure, they talked about all the different models (that's their job!) but they didn't even know the prices. And then they tried to guess the prices and they were flat-out wrong!

I honestly don't think I'll be coming back to Giant Bomb for any more thermos-related content.

KongRudi is a bad person and should feel bad. I do comprehend that this can come off as quite a shock when everything you've seen or read before came from the Sony blog or other corporate-sponsored previews. Their reaction and reception of the Vita launch was slightly more positive than my own, so yeah.

The stream is alright so far (up to Wipeout now) - I know the bad stuff is yet to come, but so far it's pretty solid.

Personally, I see nothing on the Vita that makes me want to buy it. Same with the 3DS. I'm pretty disappointed with this new handheld generation, will have to wait until the tail end when the libraries are fleshed out.

The 3DS actually has some damn solid games in 3D Land, Pushmo Blocks and Resident Evil: Revelations. But yeah, there still aren't many.

His cynicism is needed to cut through the usual marketing/hype bs other sites embrace (because there are enough people out there who just want validation and gladly swallow everything they're fed). People in the Amalur thread loved the IGN coverage, I found it repulsive.

Of course, that makes other outlets even more cynical (because it's obvious how manipulative they are with the coverage and they have to continue doing this for the clicks and continued positive publisher contacts) - the GB people have the opportunity to be honest about their cynicism a fair distance removed from the publisher money and goodwill. It's what makes their coverage more bearable.

Kongrudi seems better suited to IGN or Game Informer or Kotaku or something.

It might be unfair, but I seem to see certain publications attempt to one up each other constantly, raise the hype of a game to fever pitch, or the exact opposite, they trash a game harder than it actually deserves, some games even get it from both sides like Assassin's Creed. It'd never happen, but I'd love to have there be a publication written by people who have zero interaction with the online gaming community, or publishers, or rival publications etc. Someone untouched by all the noise surrounding a release. I don't want objectivity from coverage, but subjectivity from a less clouded source would be fascinating.

I think GiantBomb has done a lot of really interesting things, the 'gonzo' aspect of game writing had been bubbling for years certainly, there was a cult of personality around specific publications, 1up notably, but GB took it to an extreme, and while I don't really care for their writing generally, I love that they speak very candidly in their podcasts and video content. They don't seem to care at all what they say about publishers or platform holders or anyone really. It makes me wonder those companies send them stuff. It makes me wonder that in general really, unless a publisher is using a publication for endemic advertising, I'm not sure why they even bother to support the press.

Jeff had a very public raping from the impact of endemic advertising, and it seems possible that's why GB avoided that revenue stream for as long as they did, but at this point I think the cult of personality around the site has pretty much guaranteed their voices remain untethered.

I don't think I can add too much to that, that's a good analysis.

GB has to buy some of the games coming out on their own, but they get a fair share sent from publishers as well. Gerstmann and the others have been journalists for so long that they have good contacts with a lot of people in the industry which makes sure that they're not really blacklisted by any publishers. Maybe Ubisoft, I dunno.

I think I remember that they had to get Dragon Age 2 on their own. maybe I'm misremembering. But after a sitewide promotional thing with EA for Dragon Age 1, it seemed like things took a nosedive in that publisher relationship. not sure if that was temporary or not

EA won't send them early copies of games because their 5-point review scale doesn't align with metacritic. They're not blacklisted, though, they get invited to EA press events.

ok, that was it. thanks. yeah, i figured it wasn't necessarily a blacklist but some sort of disagreement.


The only blacklist I remember (and was widely talked about at the time) is that infamous 1up/ Ubisoft one that started when Crispin Boyer gave Assassin's Creed a 4.

Looking back at this thread from yesterday....lmao at angry fanboys. None of the games they showed outside of stardust/wipeout looked even mediocre. Honestly surprised Uncharted even got 3 stars after playing through the demo this weekend.
 
Looking back pages, it is obvious that people have had no idea what Giantbomb is about, and just watched it to get their fanboy purchase reinforced and when they didn't sound like a PR team, they got angry and bitched.

however having Jeff come in and throw down, fucking fantastic.

Bravo.
 
In 97 - 98, I just typed www.videogames.com into the address bar of a browser and that's how I found Gamespot. That's seems like an eternity ago but when I think about other things going on in my life at that time it doesn't feel that long ago. It does drive home the fact that I am getting old.

That's how I stumbled upon N64.com, later known as IGN64.com, which somehow expanded into the giant behemoth that IGN is today. I really miss the Peer/Matt days.
 
Watched about half the Vita QL last night and skimmed the rest. I didn't see what the complaints were about. Are they supposed to stick their dicks in the light sockets and run around hooting and hollering in excitement for every title in order to satisfy people?

Well I have to say I was in complete agreement with this position until the end there. That would be a way better show.

Edit: It really would be awesome if they responded to the Vita-Look-Hate by having a redo, where they act WAY too enthused and forced about everything.

Jeff: GUYS! Are you READY!? I'm going to play UNCHARTED ON A HANDHELD SQUEEEEEE!

Ryan: Jeff, that's AMAZING! You are a playing UNCHARTED! ON A HANDHELD!!!

I also thought they were appropriately enthusiastic, especially given how long Jeff was sitting there for.
