Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

Are you just trolling me or are you really unable to perceive the differences in context of the two scenarios you're comparing? Ryan's use the of word wasn't liberal anyway, he said it once apologized and moved on. You know what? I'll indulge your hypothetical "gotcha." If I was at Christmas party at my work and they had a Wii set up and I got really worked up playing Tennis and dropped that word I probably wouldn't get much more than a few yikes faces. But thats just my work.

How is it different? Ryan was at work(not at a work party) & in most places I've worked disciplinary action would have been taken (regardless of the apology), perhaps things are different where you are.

Jeff feeling comfortable enough to be able to tell a user to go fuck himself is, if I may just abuse the phrase, much more 'what Giant Bomb stands for'. Talk nonsense as a member of the community and don't be surprised if the crew call you out for it.
I am not saying that that due was right to call him out like that, but also, hey Jeff & crew, I without a doubt, since re-joining Gamespot, you are going to be picked at with a fine tooth comb... and even more so with the past history with them. I mean Vinny drops the "c" word that I have never said in my life an no one, including GB staff doesn't make a word in apology, but Ryan says what he said, an word that I don't think I have ever said, and the backlash is crazy, along with editing.

I am not saying either party is necessarily wrong, but I feel as though a little of this suspicion is not completely unwarranted.

I guess I just don't know what you're trying to say. You're the only one talking about work. Yeah, there are some institutions that force their participants to adhere to strict rules regardless of how nonsensical or silly they might seem. Thats true.

In my initial comment, I was speaking in a grander sense of its just a faux-pas and not the end of the world. Not in the extremely technical "there are rules at some jobs" sense.

It'd be a waste of an awesome game if it was anyone but Dave, Drew and Vinny. Jeff's already said DayZ couldn't sound more unappealing to him. Big surprise, I know.

I can see where he's coming from. Similar to EVE Online, I could see this being something where it's fascinating to hear stories about, but frustrating to play.

I think the "C-Word" isn't worth an apology because it is no longer a gender-specific insult, but I think that may depend onn where you are from(for example I have heard it being used as a term of endearment between friends in the UK).

There is a difference between a harsh curse word, and a word that is very much about attacking a group of people. That's likely the reason they reacted differently, not some CBS conspiracy. That C word is a gasp inducing swear word, that F word is like saying "Gay people are less than me", and they want to be clear that that's not how they think.

i find the response to all this a bit baffling, its clearly a homophobic expletive regardless of how it is used and just because it is still common doesnt make it ok. its like if people were still as racist as they are homophobic, would using the n-word as an expletive somehow be ok?

its absolutely inappropriate and offensive, and anyone working for somewhere like gamespot or IGN would get fired for it for sure. i get the impression people are downplaying it because its the GB guys, or because in their circle of friends using the f-word is still ok too..

comparing it to words like the c-word is ridiculous, that word is only 'taboo' because its considered vulgar because its a genital, its just like calling someone a dick.

Thinking it's "not ok" and thinking it's no big deal aren't mutually exclusive.

Whether or not you have an issue with the word is immaterial though. I swear all the time at work but as a public figure like Ryan is, he has to know that he shouldn't say it. Even if he has a problem with homosexuals it's just not smart.

I think we need to spin this topic off into a "Ryan Davis's inappropriate use of an expletive" thread. It's really getting to be too much here.

There shall be 2 threads:

- Ryan Davis presents The F Word |OT|
- Moan about your least favourite Giant Bomb employee here |OT|

Then you may as well close this thread.

Calm down. The guy apologized as deep heartily as he possibly could. It's over, Christ.

Seriously, this is getting annoying.

I'm watching TNT... why did they keep alerts on ffs. Ruining the entire thing and for the last half hour they're not even talking about them. Urgh.

This ruins a TNT more than Whitta.

The actualy TNT was a complete snorefest. Watching the funny names and the weird invites was the only thing remotely fun about last week's TNT.

I did grow to hate GB fans by the end of it, people thinking their unfunny names are worthy of any attention, TNT should just become a LAN, Split Screen and Board games show, fuck 'interacting with the fans'.

The best part of this week's TNT was when they played Trials together. Usually anything dealing with fans is terrible and boring, if not embarrassing.

At your work are you allowed to say fuck and even cunt as much as you like? Cause they already do that on the Bombcast, so perhaps it's not the same as places you have worked.

False. The c-word is considered taboo in many situations partly because it has a long history of misogyny behind it.

Is Jeff's Trackmania server still up? If so can I get to it with the free steam verison / where do I locate it? Thanks, this is exactly what i need tonight...
