Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

Tested is doing OK. Their videos get a fair amount of views on YouTube. They're working on a new site and just getting settled in to a new office.

They are probably in a better place than GB at this point.
I thought GB is raking in that CBS money. :(

We don't "cover" iOS games, but I'd like do, in rare cases where it makes sense, and we talk about iOS games on the Bombcast all the time. Fair game.

Maybe if Giant Bomb did "cover" mobile gaming (iOS accounts for half my gaming these days) I'd be ok with being auto-renewed;) The fact GB doesn't cover mobile gaming is the biggest reason I find myself going to the site less these days.

Not that I recommend GB do mobile coverage. There would probably be such a huge outcry how iOS isn't "real" gaming... Tested used to fill that roll with their App of the Day, but...yeah.

Well like everything Giant Bomb, they cover what they're interested in. For instance, they did a Quick Look EX for Infinity Blade Multiplayer and for Infinity Blade 2.

If their interests don't cover your interests, then your decision to visit other places more often is a wise one. It's a hell of a lot better than trying to get them to cover games they absolutely don't care about.

We already don't get quicklooks of games I might be interested in like vita stuff, and the 1942 game on xbla last week etc that if GB started cranking out ios/android QL's I'd be frustrated.

A game like 10million was fun, but it's better served by a 30 second description on a podcast and a yay/nay rather than a review or a quicklook.

They quickly hacked the site up after the sale to benefit from the Mythbusters tour, but I wonder how beneficial that was with the site being so awful. I'm a fan of Will and Norm, and their podcast is a weekly must listen for me, so I hope this doesn't kill the site.

I don't even want to see what Screened is like now.

Before the split I used to watch every tested video even for coffee/camera stuff I gave zero shits about.

Now 80%+ of their videos don't even have either of those guys or are about cosplay.

I probably go once every 2-3 weeks now just to be bummed out. Still listen to the podcast but fast forward through any mac/ios/android talk since it has become insufferable.

Strongly disagree. I didn't understand 10million at all until I looked up a video on it. They could do actual quick looks, meaning short, on some of the better mobile games. Five minutes would be enough.

Its that discussion everyone loves. If GiantBomb were to do another endurance run, what would be your ideal game and who would be the participants?

For me,the lineup is easily Vinny and Jeff. I can't think of a game though

It has to be:

Reasonably long
Story/character driven
Quirky
Not massively known to /already played by the audience
Easy enough to prevent constant repetition (rules Demon's/Dark Souls out)
Enough gaps in important dialogue to talk over
Graphics that don't hurt the eyes
Not significantly played by either participant
No knowledge needed of other series entries

It breaks some of those, but I'd like to see MGS3, but I assume one of them has already finished it, and it relies a bit on prior MGS knowledge. Stalker maybe?

To add to your list, unless the game has Vinny/Jeff, then the text needs to be spoken, because we all saw how horribly Ryan/Patrick are at reading/comprehending basic instructions in the Chrono Trigger Endurance Run. What, you don't remember that ER because of how frustrating and boring it was because they paid so little attention to the game? Oh...

Edit: There were a lot of suggestions on what should be next when they were doing the CT ER, but I forget what they were. The frustrating thing is that a couple of idiots compared their playing of the game to rape, which totally took away from any constructive criticism that was given in that thread. The ER got better over time, but Ryan's stubbornness and both of their inability to read/comprehend the game's story, goals, and mechanics hurt that ER for me. Maybe ER's just need voice acting and "cinematics" to work? I think Shenmue was a suggestion, and that might work.

Never watched it tbh

I never want them to do another Endurance Run. Ever. Persona 4 was great, Deadly P was a bit forced, and Chrono Trigger was way forced. I'd rather them not go through the grind again. I don't think it has a chance of being entertaining at all.

Catherine might have been a good fit, but they seemed pretty intent on not doing another Atlus game. There are so few games that are funny and have a genuinely good story, which are probably the two most important requirements for an ER.

If the right game came along, why wouldn't they?

Earthbound. You eat cheeseburgers out of trashcans, assault a cultists' meeting, and beat up hippies.

I think Catherine would have been a bad pick just because there is so little downtime in the game. You are either doing story stuff, to which attention should be paid, or you're frantically climbing blocks. For as... interesting... as that game is, there's little breathing. With Shenmue, you have enough running around town, doing stupid and menial tasks, and whatnot to allow time to decompress. Kind of like the dungeon grinding / world traveling in Persona 4 or the boring combat in Deadly Premonition where Vinny/Jeff talked about Jeff's remake of Cobra.

Earthbound would be great, depending on who is in the ER (for the reasons I stated earlier), and Chrono Trigger was a great choice, but the participants weren't up for that game. It isn't just the game, but also who's participating.

Because it takes a ton of time and resources for diminishing returns.
It also guarantees that they'll have an original video up on the site every single weekday. I'd imagine that Endurance Runs are probably the most efficient form of video they do. There's barely any editing that needs to be done, and they record an entire week's run in one 3-4 hour chunk. And they've generally done them in the February-June months, where there isn't much else that they would be doing.

Man, they really could use an Endurance Run announcement right about now. Aside from the last couple days of content and the recent marathon events, shit has been GRIM. Even an announcement that it's coming this winter would make me feel so much better about the $50 I just plunked down.

I'd love to see an Endurance Run of a horror game. I remember watching the Kessler/Steve Fear Gauntlet feature, and being surprised at how entertaining it was. It'd be really fun to see the main crew getting their pants scared off. I haven't played that many horror games, but I feel they'd be a pretty good fit. They're usually deliberately paced, allow for some light strategy, and have intriguing storylines and tense situations. Most of the guys don't seem too keen on the genre, except for Patrick, who has probably played everything. Horror games are also more obscure than most other genres, so it would be a good opportunity to introduce people to new games, like the first ER did for the Persona series. I did a quick google search, and found this list of 25 of the best horror games:

http://www.gameranx.com/features/id/1988/article/top-25-best-horror-games-of-all-time/

Surprisingly, I hadn't even heard of a lot of them.

Oh, and if they ever did this, they'd have to have cameras on them like they do for live shows.

I feel like the only way Ryan's ever gonna play Amnesia is if he's forced to do it on camera. Make it happen, Giant Bomb. Ryan/Brad Scaredurence Crawl.

Ryan would be the worst person to play Amnesia, I think.
I guess, but he's at least expressed interest in doing so. Make Brad play it, then. Jeff wouldn't be a good fit, and the other two guys have played it already.

I really liked the Fear Gauntlet where they did Condemned, so anything that scratches that itch would be great. I suspect Patrick's got something planned for Halloween.

Ryan would be the worst person to play Amnesia, I think.

With all the Wii U stuff today I'd love some sort of live stream of them just talking about all the info. I want some GB Wii U hype! The Japan details are pretty damn good...

I think the best we'll get is some jaded skepticism on the next Bombcast.

I haven't played any of the entries in the series, but would a game like Fatal Frame 3 be a good candidate? From what I gather, it's decently long and rather unique, but maybe a little too serious in tone.

Also, I think a Vinny/Drew ER would be legendary. Not likely, though.

Maybe. Nintendo seem to be approaching it correctly though, at least if the price converts from the Yen as it's speculated to.

It's been 6 goddamn years since the last console launch. I think it deserves a bit more attention than just the Bombcast. I know they'll do a huge marathon like they did with the Wii at Gamespot, but still, let's get some pre-release discussion about it.

I don't know about another Endurance Run. I don't like to be close minded, but I feel like any combo that isn't Jeff + Vinny simply won't be able to deliver the goods. Their two ER's are legendary. The P4 one is what really got me into Giant Bomb beyond just the Bombcast.

The way things are going with content this year I'm not sure even that would be a lock-in, at least not to the same extent as the Wii marathon.

I think Jeff is the key component. Vinny complimented him well by taking the jokes to the next level, but I felt Jeff was typically the genesis of the hilarity. It's too bad Jeff is the one least interested in doing another.

I wonder if they even saw a boost from being featured on RWJ?

I've come to expect very little from GB around industry events. They always produce less content than any of the other gaming websites. Case in point, the whole crew went to PAX and only ended up with 4 videos (3 interviews + the panel) for their effort, at the cost of very little update to the site itself for nearly 2 weeks. Specialized and quirky videos have been a selling point for GB from the start, but compared to a year ago, the quantity and quality have been steadily declining. What they do consistently (QL and Bombcast) are still great, but in all honesty, they seem to have stopped trying or are just creatively bankrupted at this point.

I wonder if this is actually true. Someone should do a video count for each year of GB.

I'd like to see Brad and Vinny play REmake.

other websites have 25 editors and video editors and hey have 2 with a normal 8 hour work day in the office their is only so much you can do.

I do not really understand the comparison.

PLUS they do not cover everything they cover what they think their audience wants to see/they want to see.

You have to know this going in, they did not cover your game? Go to an other website.

None of them would have the patience to deal with playing it, but I'd definitely like to see them try Rule of Rose or Haunting Ground.

That's one of the problems with them doing a horror game, they're all pretty impatient, and most real horror games are kind of a slow burn. The other problem is it's pretty easy to 'break' them by having other people there and talking through the whole thing, killing the atmosphere.

It's why anything story-dense doesn't really work as an ER either, as most of the giant bomb guys don't really care and about/ pay attention to story even if it's good.

Thinking about it, after dropping the weekly show, ERs, video reviews, not having some kind of follow up to TANG, relegating ILM to candid office videos, I'm inclined to agree to an extent. I think they've always been pretty blunt about their actual output capacity when it comes to covering actual events though.

Wow. When you put it that way, it's quite a drop in content.

You missed the point. The point is, from the end user point of view, it'd be better if they stayed in SF and covered the events via podcasts/TNT, and continue shooting QLs during the week.

ow right, yeah well with most events they actually do that, no TGS and no gamescom, no comic-con.

2x PAX, 1 GDC and 1 E3.
and some publisher events if they are close by or being flown in for, like capcom and EA stuff.
That is not that much I think.

Also PAX for them is just a "vacation" so I think its just an expectation think than.
