Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

You guys over react. The Giantbomb crew need some new people for their shows. Losing the Whiskey Media family was kind of a significant loss.

Oh

my

god

Giant Bomb had a pretty good run.

Can it just be Ryan cursing at all the Gamespot guys and outright dismissing everything they say?

Oh ew.

I thought it was just going to be a Giant Bomb thing.

Disappointed.

2008-2013

Huh, I'm suddenly much less interested in that show. I guess we'll see how it goes.

Ugh....well there goes all the interest I had for that show...

Well that's a bit of hype killer.

Suddenly don't care I have a class when this is gonna be on now

Gamespot on the new releases show? Hype lost.

Large websites are interested in large dollars. Boutique websites that only pull in modest amounts of profit aren’t things they can go trumpet to investors or CEOs or presidents. Those people are interested in the bottom-line results. The business types are probably more interested in rolling the dice and trying to turn the small thing into a big thing (or bleeding the small thing’s talent dry in an attempt to make their big things bigger) has a greater potential upside than just leaving it be does.

Giant Bomb is a business. They are running their business the way businesses are run. They are not a charity and the idea of creating great art is something that the guys and gals at the top probably only talk about when they sense that the person they’re talking to thinks that the company is run by monsters. I don’t even feel like I’m singling out Giant Bomb here. You could substitute the names of most major websites into this and get a similar result. I don’t especially like it, either, but at some point you’re asking lions to act like lambs and that isn’t how the world works.

Stop asking large websites to not be large websites.

I tease because I love

On the spot was such a good podcast... ah the good old days.

But all in all.. this merger has got to be strange for Ryan, Jeff, Brad, Vinny, and alex. They all LEFT gamespot.

Sure its been some years, but its back to haunt them.

Need to remind you guys that after the initial exodus when Jeff was fired, Vinny had to host the Hotspot and it was great. That was when I first knew who he was. Look at him now.

I'm actually sort of looking forward to the stream. It'll be nice for them to mix things up a little. I feel that the quantity of their output lately has been the right amount, but they've settled into something of a weekly routine. Hopefully the Gamespot guys won't be totally static and boring like they often are, and maybe this will inject some spontaneity into things.

It makes good business sense to come together for things like this. It'll make for a more informative program to have more editors around to talk about the new games they've been playing. If it was only the Giant Bomb staff doing such a stream, they would only have a couple of games to talk about.

And we know Gamespot isn't trying to merge the sites any time soon. They wouldn't have wasted countless man-hours to re-design Giant Bomb if they didn't intend to keep it separate. And I like to think that whoever makes the decisions at Gamespot these days recognizes the value of Giant Bomb's rabid and dedicated fanbase.

Why the hell are people freaking out? They're right down the hallway from each other. It makes sense to do this if they're making even more content.

It was a silly spoof on Jeff's response to this question on his tumblr:
"Hey guys, you know that third installment to a trilogy you were planning? Well you need to change everything. EVERYTHING. You need to appeal to every single demographic at the same time rather than stick to what you know, and you need to make every single change we demand of you if you want us to publish your game. Oh look at that, it sold like shit. Clearly it's your fault. We're never publishing your games again." Will EA ever learn?
I just changed a few words :P

The problem is that we loved all the guys we lost and most of the Gamespot editors make poor replacements. One of the Giant Bomb guys will inevitably say something tongue-in-cheek, a Gamespot guy will interpret the comment at face value, and there will be awkward feels all around.

I don't hate them, I just don't give a shit about them. If I wanted to see/hear them I would go to Gamespot directly. That and the fact that the moment there's more than 4-5 people on a stream it just becomes a big mess impossible to follow.

Er..the more gamespot shit..the less I'll visit the site. I'll stick to podcast if anything.

What's going on there anyway? That thread is impenetrable

* They gave SimCity a 9.5 based off what they played in their pristine reviewer environment
* The game went live and it's a cluster
* They adjusted their score to an 8 or something for the time being
* Internet Pitchforks
* Polygon is circling the wagons

I guess they want more than one person to be able to talk about those new releases, because mostly only the reviewer would have played it at that point. Totally fine with me.

I'm not familiar with the current Gamespot staff, but if they're going to be regulars on a GB live show, I'm sure we'll get used to them just fine as we did with Will and Norm on Happy Hour.

I guess I'll watch to see how ackward it gets.

Hopefully this isn't a weekly thing of letting the GameSpot guys come and join them even though it sure seems like it if they're gonna let them on during the first show.

But for real fuck the gamespot guys.

One of the greatest missed opportunities of Giant Bomb and Gamespot working together was the possibility of a wrestling invasion angle. "MY GOD, Giancarlo Varanini just hit Shaun McInnis in the back of the head with a steel chair! Wait! He is taking off his shirt and revealing a Giant Bomb logo WHAT COULD THIS MEAN? TUNE IN NEXT WEEK FOR CBSi NITRO!"

lol wasn't there something with Jeff walking out or wanting to walk out to the NWO theme at that first GameSpot stream after they were acquired? I forget if it actually happened.

I think they did actually play the nWo theme before Jeff did that stream with John Davison to talk about the purchase.

Guys....

Vinny, Brad, Jeff and Ryan used to work...

FOR GAMESPOT

FUCK'EM TOO!!

Patrick is the only one we can trust.

I would think the hate for Gamespot is hate for the guys rather than for the concept of ever having worked for the site. Those two people who were in that video podcast with Ryan where he got all mad because they were wrong didn't come out of that looking good, for example. Although I think one of them showed up on the Spelunky TNT as the guy who knew everything about Spelunky and that was kind of all right.

In the end I think the dissapointment is mostly because I Love Mondays has been replaced by a Giant Bomb/Gamespot double show and most people in here really love Giant Bomb content. Giant Bomb/Gamespot content isn't necessarily good Giant Bomb content.

It's totally possible that this show might suck, but people should at least check it out first before: "GRRR FUCK THIS THEY GOT GAMESPOT IN MY GIANT BOMB, NEVER WATCHING THIS EVER GIANT BOMB ARE SELL OUTS!"

I am sure some of the responses in this thread are jokes or overreacting on purpose, but at least watch the thing first, then call it shit (or maybe it will be totally awesome.)

Also, don't forget that GB isn't afraid to pull the plug on something that isn't working like that totally awful Farmville series the interns were doing.

People overjudge things they haven't seen yet all the time! And apparently so did the approximately two people who posted seriously about this!
