He hates venerably well received games ie, Jet set radio, Nights, New Mario 2 DS, and a number of other good titles in the last few bombcasts. And is generally wrong when talking about games and gaming history.

The new mario is dreadful and you really can't see why someone wouldn't like nights? I'm glad Jeff has his own opinions, Giantbomb would be shitty if everyone just agreed with the general consensus of the majority.

Him not liking the games you like doesn't make him wrong.

Incoming 999 and VLR talk.

I'm gonna have to sit down and play these fast before the chance of spoils comes up. You can't be too careful.
Can't wait for him to dismiss 999 with a meh and one or two sentences on the next cast because... well, it's just not that good. Massively overrated on GAF.

edit: wait, he doesn't like Jet Set Radio? Klepek, get in here and explain yourself.

Hello, my name is Duffyside and I represent Mr. Klepek on issues concerning Jet Set Radio.

He liked it a lot at the time, but correctly realized that much of the systems don't hold up anymore when they played the HD remake.

He does like it. But playing the XBLA rerelease for the Quick Look has diminished some of his fond memories.

This

Also the QL of Jeff just trashing on NiGHTS was pretty funny. I have nothing against NiGHTS but sometimes a little venom from the crew can be entertaining.

Exactly. If you can't respect their opinions I don't know why you even go to that site. I really enjoyed my time with NSMB2, and Jeff hates it. I still respect and value his opinion even when it differs from mine. Because I know that's his unbiased opinion.

I feel like going in to something with an attitude "Time to see what the fuss is about" more often than not will lead to disappointment regardless of how much one would have enjoyed it without that mentality.

In general, anyway, not necessarily in this specific instance.

Is 999 the DS game which starts with you waking up on a sinking ship?

If it is, I have no idea why it's being so strongly recommended. I think I got about 2 hours in before giving up. Very frustrating and awkward to play. Everything felt like it took five times longer than it needed. This is coming from someone who's an adventure game fanatic.

Pacing felt extremely good to me? I suppose if you're not used to reading a lot in a game it could take a while. That's the only reason I could think of someone feeling like things took too long.

Necessarily in this instance in my case. I beat it first time on GAF hype
getting the Sub ending
and didn't know what the fuss was about until
someone clued me in on the multiple endings and from then on I saw how that worked so WELL. If he doesn't replay it to get those other endings, it will be a WUT game for him.

Yes.

I never felt that it was frustrating or awkward to play and I don't think ever played an adventure game before 999.

I did very much like Jet Set Radio, probably my favorite Dreamcast game, but the recent XBLA release shattered that illusion. It just doesn't hold up to modern scrutiny, though Ryan and I have talked about bringing in JRS Future to see how that holds up. He claims it does.

Birthday Cake definitely holds up.

Itll definitely hold up for a quicklook, but the endgame in JSRF is one of the worst things in any Sega game. Its almost low-tier 3D Sonic game bad
Absolutely directionless, and completely repetitive (hey lets play deathball with the exact same AI paths 3 times in a row!). JSR is a more consistent experience but I guess that only helps edge it out if youre like me and thinks the game holds up.
Poor endgame in JSRF aside, i think both are pretty fantastic and can see how JSRF is more appealing under modern scrutiny.

Quick Look Throwback, dawg.

Sometimes I feel weird and lucky that I don't have this feeling of "ruined memories" and "not holding up."

I'll go back and play old games from years and years ago that I loved back then, and I love them just as much even when they don't look as impressive.

The games you loved as a kid are always fun to go back and play, because you're essentially relearning them, looking through a completely new lens. It's really neat. It's like you got to play a game for the first time twice.

I feel like the longer you are away from something the less forgiving you are of it. Growing up there were a lot of games I replayed fairly regularly because I was lucky to get one or two games for Christmas or my Birthday. I can't count the number of times I've beaten Super Mario World or Donkey Kong Country, or seen the first four hours of Chrono Trigger. The games I replay once every year or two seem to be the ones that I'm most blind to their flaws - I can understand why somebody couldn't get in to Half-Life 1 nowadays, but I still replay it every 18 months or so.

But I got away from Jet Set Radio for a long time, and going back to it, especially after playing Jet Set Radio Future fairly recently, is really rough. Not unplayable, but there's a huge period of adjustment where your character feels really sluggish and super difficult to control. I don't think it really "ruined my memories" so much, however - it just more confirmed, "Oh, that's why I had so much trouble with the Grind Square level in high school."

Hooray. Something to watch/listen to while I'm mindlessly maxing out characters here.

Dodge Jason by holding down then quickly throw things at him. Rinse repeat. Also, go into the cave to fight Jason's Mom. (there's quite a bit of crap to get in this game, but it's too bad the game itself is shit)

Absolutely, he only wants to know about what's hot today. If only he were more interested in games of the past, there are some gems out there!

Regarding Dishonored, I think it was a pretty very cool game (played through it non-lethally/stealthily, of course). And high chaos/low chaos playthroughs do make for some pretty significant differences, contrary to what was said on the podcast: Much more walkers and dismay in the city, very disturbed drawings by Emily on high chaos, different ending level (support or direct hostile action by Sam), different Ending, ...

That's not true. Maybe you are using dry humor and I'm simply missing it. But I would never have gotten into classic arcade cabinets and stuff if not for having been made aware of California Extreme through the Bombcast. Nor would I have heard of Money Puzzle Exchanger or Tetris Battle Gaiden.

Hah!

That's like watching 2 minutes of a film and dismissing it for all time.

Semi-valid, I suppose... nobody should force themselves to watch/complete something they hate... but still dumb as bricks, especially considering the way 999 is structured.

2 hours is a hell of a lot more time than 2 minutes, both overall and in general to the rest of it. Unless the game is 120 hours or something he's played a lot more than he has watched of the 2 minutes.

When is it acceptable to stop playing when you don't enjoy it?

I can't help but to feel like this stream is going better because they seem to be following a FAQ.

GO TO THE CAVE AND FIGHT HIS MOM.
