Indeed! I wanna make him play some shitty old survival horror game like I always used to do at Game Informer. For those that haven't seen those, the best were Overblood, Illbleed, Blue Stinger, Cyberia, and shit like that. Does anyone have any suggestions for a game along those lines (survival horror/adventure/shitty FMV or voice acting) that I can easily download on Steam? I'm leaning towards BlackSoul, which is along those lines. If anyone has a better idea, let me know.

See if the CBSi game vault somehow has a copy of Deep Freeze

This week's Beastcast has completely broke me when it comes to VR talk, VR isn't even out yet and it's already white noise at this point.

Call me when there's real content and not glorified tech demos and games that would be equally playable on a normal TV. Until then, the hype is meaningless. As weird as it is, Summer Lesson is the first game I've seen that truly looks like a VR app. If the only stuff people are hyping is shit like Job Simulator and a playroom filled with silly mini games, the content isn't ready.

I'm genuinely curious about VR porn. It's not something I'd ever use at home just because I'd be worried about someone walking in on me during my private time, but I wanna see what it looks like.

That's the thing, there's some stuff that I actually think looks neat, even if it's not some revolutionary thing.

The thing that bugs me is that the conversations have been the exact same thing for about a year and it's been constant. I appreciate that VR could be big for video games but the conversations about it's implications have been driven so far into the ground that we're now in a cycle of "I wonder if VR will go mainstream" or "VR is awesome but you probably won't believe me unless you try it".

It's also not like those conversations will go away when it's out, they're just going to become even more frequent as people start to become attached to VR and want it to catch on.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to the Kinect-tier VR quick looks, assuming GB can figure out a recording solution.

The only thing better would be Kinect's triumphant return.

Of course it isn't ready, these aren't consumer models. These are early adopter toyboxes for rich people to go "ooh, neat" and dump money into those companies.

Except we've been hearing the same excuse since the OR dev kits launched. It always accompanied a promise that all this build up would lead to content on the launch. Now we're there and the content is still no more than vapid promises. All this ' believe us, it's revolutionary' teasing has gotten way old and burned out my interest about hearing VR talk all together.

Yeah, the VR launch is going to be the typical console launch: mostly undercooked or not overly complex games, bad ports that kinda half work on the new platform, and maybe one or two really good experiences that kinda make you feel okay about your purchase.

we probably wont see anything major for the platform for a year or more as the market struggles through the initial teething phase.

that said, i don't see how i make it to the end of 2016 without at least one of these headsets because im a sucker for new and promising tech

Lol, when I see these kind of comments I cant help but remember back in the days of the 1up podcasts when they would get all kinds of complaints about too much iPhone talk. Not saying VR will reach the same popularity as the iPhone just yet but a lot of these conversations are going to sound comedically dated in 5 years.

Wasn't the point of doing multiple dev kits and continually pushing back the consumer launch was so that there would actually be content for launch? Now launch is hitting and the content available seems to show that developers still barely have a grasp on what to do with the tech.

I'm not going to be stupidly reactionary and say a bad launch lineup will killer VR, but selling consumers on one of these silly headsets is going to be far trickier than selling a console. There really needs to be some stellar content. If where we are now is glorified mini game collections, how long will it take to actually get something that truly wows enough to sell to mainstream folks? Can VR last that long or will that buildup give it a nasty image in the mainstream consumer base that will stamp out even promising projects?

These are still the questions that are open. We'll see. I could definitely see it going either way. All I can say right now is that as a enthusiast tech consumer, the VR hype and buildup has done nothing but bad things to the platform's image for me.

I'm rich?? Sweet!

Well you're rich enough to afford the equipment, but what I meant was individuals who can invest.

I don't think it's the same thing though. The iPhone had some design ideas that permeated the market but it didn't invent the cellphone.

I'm in for the cockpit style games and they already exist and aren't glorified mini-games. Elite Dangerous, Project Cars, the Truck Simulator games, Eve Valkyrie are real full fledge games but I can see why people aren't interested in those types of games or are looking to be sold by something completely new and exclusive to VR.

A really good F1 sim could get me damn close to buying both VR and a racing wheel, but I do think the tech needs more to justify it. If all we can really agree on are cockpit games are neat, the tech still has issues.

About to check out some potential UPF games for Tim based on your recommendations. Gonna look at Bloodnet, Curse: The Eye of Isis, and Daylight. Any other suggestions?

It's gotta be a deeper look of this Resident Evil clone, Countdown Vampires.

These two are great choices as well..

People want their resident evils, final fantasies, batmans, etc.

I just want to play things built around the VR experience regardless of it being a known quantity or not.

Like, Kojima needs to do something with VR. Or like i said earlier, the ACE team could make a terrific/terrifying surreal experience.

But people who are waiting for that sick AAA VR production to give them the excuse to jump ship might be waiting for a long time because, outside of maybe Sony, i dont see anyone willing to take that risk given how long the VR market is likely to take for such a production to be worthwhile

Please let Tim discuss RE6 with Brad. Pleeeeeeeeeeease.

Lots of crazy stuff on those 1up podcasts. I have vivid memories of John Davidson acting like some F2P MMO from Atlus was going to be the next big thing.

He also apparently said the Vita was going to be the new Walkman.

Has anyone played The Cat Lady? It seems like a genuinely interesting point and click horror game but I don't do point and click.

Oh. Tim is the guy that actually thinks RE6 is a good game.

This should be a fantastic UPF.

RE6 has excellent gunplay and CQC mechanics. Shooting even a pop gun feels exceedingly good, due to the crack in the sound and the exaggerated hit reactions. Melee attacks and CQC counters feel meaty and powerful, and the cripple->melee gameplay loop while dodging minibosses/bosses trying to fuck your cycle up is so satisfying.

Make no mistake, almost everything else in the game is utter shite, but when it comes to gameplay it's on par with, if not better than, RE4.

These localization 'arguments' are already invading Pokemon threads? Man that's disappointing. I sure hope this dumb crap blows over and relegates to weird fan translation forums once again.

Dan if you're still reading this make sure you show Tim the Special Thanks in the credits of Streets of Rage 2 because it's something the both of you would lose your shit over

so what caused Jeff to go on a rant about importing?

he played a bunch of working designs games

People bitching about Fire Emblem's Localization. Said bitching seems to have moved into nearly every thread about Japanese games in general.

A very vocal, and unfriendly, group of people have locked onto a handful of changes Treehouse made to the script. Some of those changes aren't perfect, so therefore Treehouse are hacks. Also, any changes to a game script in translation is completely unacceptable in general.

It's a shame that it's awful at introducing the depth of the combat to players.

Why are you guys having VR conversations from 2 years ago in here?

You kind of answered your own question.

"but the shooting feels so good"

Just imagine how different RE's trajectory would be if RE6 was an always-online, hub-based multiplayer game instead of a co-op game. A dramatically different Destiny.
