Giant Bombcast - | 02-07-2012 |

I played through the first two gear of war but hadn't gotten to three. The fact that the third game has a story at all is the most shocking spoiler of all.

I’m still baffled by the Gears spoiler complaints in here. game is almost 5 months old. Spilling FF XIII-2 spoilers is worse.

(I also find myself playing through Gears now and not really giving a shit about anything. Only reason i keep at it is that I’m playing co-op with a friend. The whole thing has become very forgettable for me, sadly)

Dissing on Dom and praising Griffin? Bah, I say bah to you Ryan!

Just finished, was an alright episode. I feel its gotten a little bloated with the constant 5 man group though. Also, the crew should feel free to discussing endings of games if they want, after a good couple of months and a fair warning of course. I like to hear their more intimate thoughts about a game.

yea, they actually tried in the 3rd game.

It's still very basic and overall uninteresting although how they handled the spoiler event discussed was extremely well done.

Edit: i meant Epic/the actual game in regards to the event in Gears 3 being done well. It was suprisingly a powerful moment. But I also felt I had enough time to avoid the spoiler talk when listening to the podcast

yup, i have no qualms with their Gears 3 spoiler talk cuz that had some build up.

Not really though.

Ryan says he finished Gears 3 (1:26:13). He asks if they can talk about "that... some stuff?" Jeff then says "I'd expect that people who have finished it have finished it."

Ryan them immediately launches into the big spoiler (1:26:27). There are about 15 seconds from the start of the conversation on the game to spoiler happening. And no one says "spoiler warning" or anything.

I think I was kind of in a daze while that was happening because I was driving to work and then BOOM... spoilers in my ears.

I don't understand all the praise Reckoning is getting. To me it's an average game. The world feels so empty, there is no personality to the NPCs, like say a Fable game has. Everything feels static, almost MMO like.

And the comparisons to Skyrim are weird to me. Fable is much more closer to it than Skyrim.

Sorry, I'm over the 13 year old fart humor of fable games

oh, i mean Ryan was kinda building up to talking about the major spoiler from previous podcasts so when he said he finished it, i was expecting a full on discussion at this point.

Personally I fucking love endgame discussions. Skyrim, Catherine, Gears 3 - let's get it all out there, no tiptoeing around. And as part of the natural flow of podcast conversation too, just a heads up is all I need.

But don't spoil AC: Revelations. I haven't finished that one yet.
Kidding. DO IT

The worst spoiling on any podcast for me was when Jeff Cannata was talking about Crysis 2 on Weekend Confirmed the week it came out, and said "If you will permit me a small spoiler..." then proceeds to detail the setting of the last level in the game. I still get mad about that one.

I was ok with it (even though I hadn't gotten there yet) because at least someone was talking about far and away the best shooter of the year.

lol, i remember that. i don't mind people discussing different parts of a game but endings or end-game stuff should always have warnings. ALWAYS.

I wish they would talk about MORE spoilers, fuck people who can't figure out how to pause+ fast forward with a game that's 3+ months out. If the game's been out a week? Sure put a timestamp and be super clear but in these threads people will cry about 2+year games being spoiled..ugh.

Nothing is worse than listening to them tiptoe around something they want to talk about but end up not bothering due to spoiler crying.

Good point and it was just about the last time they talked about it too. =\

Did they do an end of year show or anything? I stopped listening before then, but Jeff really seemed to love the game at the time. I'd be surprised if he didn't mention it later on.

Though, not really.

I absolutely agree. Give a strong indication that there will be spoilers, but then go nuts. Every time Jeff said "the main quests have great writing" when discussing Reckoning, I would loved to see an example of what he was talking about.

people wouldn't bitch if they simply warned beforehand. i could care less if they wanna spoil the whole game. just a warning would be nice.

Darn spoiler babies ruining the free and open discussion of games. Be nice if at least one out of the many podcast out there wasn't submitting to your tyranny and spoiled the shit out of everything

Talking about spoilers is fine. But it is so easy to just clearly say "Yo, spoilers" and then give people a second for that to actually register and get to their pause button.

I think I can count on one hand how many games have actually surprised me in an interesting way. I'd rather just hear people talk about games without worrying how many people would burst into tears because they found out Drake untucks his shirt all the way in act 3.

My solution would be to put it in the intro. "Welcome to the Bombcast. Sometimes we talk about specific shit in games. Stop listening now if you care."

Jeff mentioned once or twice it was one of his top shooters of the year along with Bulletstorm. No one else bothered to play it.

don't generalize. they talked about ending stuff for very recent games. saying "spoilers" to allow people to skip ahead is just being considerate.

People want their impressions of games, not the entire story or plot. Might as well just spoil the games in their reviews.

Or just learn to understand people with valid complaints and would just prefer to be warned. That would probably be easier.

Yes, and this is hardly the first time people have complained about spoilers on this or any other podcast.

Specifically in this instance though, the notion that endings must be kept secret for years significantly hinders the conversation.

Even if they didn't get into specifics because nobody beat it, the stuff they mentioned about the XIII-2 ending was annoying. Game came out a week ago, that's barely enough time for even bigger fans of the game to have completed it. Gears 3 stuff, sure, that's past the statute in my mind, but 1 week? C'man.

Personally I find the stuff with FFXIII-2 ending a legitmate complaint with the game and the type of thing that should be pointed out in reviews and impressions. Why are people harping on reviewers to finish games if they can't call foul on endings in instances like this?

I didn't see anyone in the OT complaining when that movie which ended with a URL a few weeks ago was called out for it. I find movie (tv and books too) discussion much more "spoiler" heavy, I'd like if games moved in that direction.

Thats just me though

It's just too recent and Patrick didn't warn beforehand. Hell, Brad didn't even finish it yet so who knew the ending chat would pop up? Really annoying.

I don't think what they said about XIII-2 is really a spoiler, they didn't describe how it ends, just an aspect of it which could put people off buying it. It's buying advice as much as it is a light spoiler.

That's how I viewed it. I was pretty thankful they said what they did. Instead of getting it, I will wait how things with DLC, etc. play out.

Agree 100%, knowing it ended in a cliffhanger lets me get rid of the 3% of curiosity for the series I had left after the abomination that is 13.

They could be a little more considerate in terms of providing warning, but I'm on board with more spoilers in podcast conversation. It lets people actually have a complete conversation about the game.

Better than the alternative, like where Konami wouldn't let reviewers talk about the length of the cutscenes in MGS4.

It's nice to be able to go into a game unspoiled, but unless a mystery is really the crux of something, I can't think of a case where I've had a spoiler and it has negatively impacted my experience with the product in question. Ultimately, good experiences and stories are good enough to stand on their own once everything is known.

It just seems weird that none of them have even beat it and they’re complaining that it isn’t a “complete story”. They don’t consider it to be a high enough tier game that they should be careful about who might not want to know that.

I think the reason nobody really cared about that exorcism movie was because it was universally panned and they was actually doing a favor to let people know it ended like that so they didn’t waste their money. XIII-2 has received decent praise, critically and among the fan-base, even if they think it’s “just another Final Fantasy game”.

My point is, a simple warning that it was about the ending would be nice. I would've gladly skipped it and the rest of you guys can enjoy it.

Isn't the point of buying advice to give it before someone commits to buying a game?

It's a bit like the MGS2/Halo 2 thing, if the spoiler is something which could affect your decision to play it, it needs to be communicated before hand. In saying that, I do think it should have been done with tact, or maybe not at all given Patrick doesn't really seem to know the details.

I'm playing thru the game at the moment, I did already know about this aspect of the ending, and while I'm fine with it (at least I was in theory, now I'm near the end of the game, and am pretty sure of what exactly it's going to be missing, I'm not so pleased), I think if it's going to change people's minds on blowing $50, it's worth giving the warning.

If nothing else, it might have people just delay until that DLC comes out, the game will be a little cheaper, and possibly more rewarding.

I just think a critique of a game and the decision to buy it should be based on the game in it's entirety, not just the last 30 seconds of the game that they were made privy to, and felt like they needed share with the world to save them from wasting their money. If none of them wanted to spend the time properly reviewing the game, they shouldn't have said anything regarding the ending. It just could've been handled better, I still love the Bombcast and everyone on it.

Pretty much this.

Anyway, the easiest thing for me to do now is to just skip through their game discussions for games I'm playing.

Heard the spoiler but since i don't really care much about the story in Gears i didn't mind. (I could see others getting pissed though).

Plus it wasn't Brad this time :P

I haven't yet played Gears 3, but will at some point in the coming weeks. I played and really enjoyed both of the first games.

And I didn't give a good goddamn about the spoiler, because I've never been dumb enough to go into a Gears game expecting to care about the story. You people for rizzle?
