Giant Bombcast 03-22-2011

Far Cry didn't have quick saves even though it was a PC only game. To quick save you had to use the console and type in commands, and I did that because the checkpoints were often miles apart in that game.

A bombcast under two hours is like a "HD" game under 720p

Sure it may still be good, but its not a true next gen bombcast experience

Also, I'm pretty sure it dipped under 60 VPS (Vinnys per second) at a few points

The problem with not having quick saves is it is a feature PC gamers expect to have in their shooters and many people like using it so there is no reason to not include it. It's not like we're talking about some massive, complex new feature. It's just fucking quick saving. Checkpointing isn't the same nor is it any better. I want to save wherever the fuck I want to save, the choice is in my hands, not the computer's. Checkpointing isn't "THE FUTURE," it's a console feature unnecessary on PCs. It's regressive on PCs. It eliminates choice and control. It's one of the most obvious, pure examples of "consolization" there is.

Except that Crytek's first game, released as a PC exclusive in 2004, did not have quick saves.

Perhaps someone will figure out how to do quick saves using the console in Crysis 2.

It wasn't right to not include it in 2004, and it isn't right to not include it in 2011. Bowing down to regressive console design is not the future PC gamers want to see.

-Poor Vinny, he was really into Dragon Age Origin and Awakening I remember when he was talking about them for weeks and playing multiple characters..,now look like he is forcing himself to play this DA2, it's just sad , shame on you Bioware.

-3D effect seems really not that hot and not a super duper gimmick, also if the tilting break the damn 3D ( main feature) then I guess the tilting was just an after thought.

-Going with what Brad said, it seems like playing DS games on 3DS is just fucking horrible,I wonder if the NGP is like that too.

-I don't care about the Jeff's N64 hate or Nintendo milking mario, but Nintendo better bring Mario 64,Kirby 64,1080° Snowboarding and Wave Race 64 with updated graphics like OoT.

They should really just stop talking about stuff relating to PC gaming beyond Starcraft.

Giant Bomb need a spin-off podcast with Dave and Drew about PC gaming, They have that waste of bandwidth Nintendownload x-press shit, so why not something that actually will worth a damn.

the first two or so hours of DA2 take a while to build up but once you have more guys in your party, it's fantastic. gonna be curious what Vinny thinks when he plays some more.

Not a fan of quicksaves because they have an effect similar to what quicksaves do to arcade games. But on the other hand Jeff's dismissal of Crysis shows his crappy perspective.

I still love that ridiculous Rango PR line, especially since I saw screenshots of the level in question and it looks more like the DLC from Mirrors Edge.

he stated he played 10 or so hours.

The more you play Dragon Age 2, assuming you're not crazy in love with it, the more you hate it. Recycled environments wear you down, the fact that you never go anywhere outside of Kirkwall and Kirkwall sucks to begin with dawns on you, and the Act 3 ending cements the mediocrity of Dragon Age 2.

This is the opposite of true.

I thought the first six hours were fine, but everything after mirrored those first six hours, not in quality but in content.

The game starts slowly wearing away at you and by the end you start to really dislike it.

I think what destroyed DA2 and let them reuse environments and throw shitty quests is the the heavy dlcs they did for DAO, how can they make a decent game when they released shit tons of dlcs and also another DLC just 6 months away before DA2 release date ( Witch Hunt September 2010) , Bioware should have focused on DA2 completely instead of the dlcs crap.

Considering how much they love ME2, I wonder if any of them will call out Merill for being the Dragon Age team's blatant attempt at Tali'Zorah vas Kirkwall.

Time to revise my list of places to eat at next time I'm in CA

  1. In and Out

In and Out is the most overhyped fast food chain on the planet. California just doesn't know hot dogs.

What the hell was that thermos segment? That was gross.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR THERMOS VINNY, THAT LOOKS LIKE A HIGH QUALITY PRODUCT AVAILABLE FOR A REASONABLE PRICE

Get that shit out of the Bombcast.

I don't think they were sponsored or anything. Jeff brought up they sounded like shills and it turned into a long joke.

Its like 30 Rock joking about snapple or the McFlurry or something. Nothing to get worked up over at all.

Are you telling me that this thermos is the best thermos they have ever used?

Edit: Its also reasonably priced.

You're right dude, I should definitely give people involved with the games industry the benefit of the doubt when it comes to gross payola bullshit. Not like Whiskey Media is desperately searching for money, right? It was a bizarre interlude that was way way too specific about some random ass product.

It couldn't have been more obvious, even for someone who had never heard the Giant Bombcast before.

I hope to god you are right because the alternative is too awful to contemplate.

But maybe they made it seem like a joke and joked about it being sponsored so we wouldn't realize it was actually sponsored!

Speaking of sponsored products, I want a Roku!

Been wanting a way to get amazon video on my TV without moving my PC and giantbomb videos are the icing on the cake. Tonight I'm going to pick up one from best buy and then move the PS3 (the current tv netflix player) up to the bedroom

Thanks Giantbomb!

Yeah. I have a 3DS pre-ordered mostly because my white DS Lite is on its way out, sadly, and I wanted to replace it. If DS games look as bad as he implies I may hold off and get a DSI XL. Frustrating because total that's way more than I was planning to spend.

I absolutly love GB and listen to them every week but damn they play pretty much every game on the 360, I would like to hear ps3 impressions also, oh well, still love them.

Jeff actually mentioned last week that the main reason they play pretty much all the multi platform games on the 360 is because the saves can be transferred between multiple consoles so much easier then the PS3 and their strange system. Maybe cloud saves will allow them to vary it up a bit.

The locked saves talk was just for reviews, thing is it's not only PS3, they don't talk about PS3 ,PC,Wii or DS games , they only do quick look for only the biggest Wii or PS3 games, yeah they are 360 focused site, if someone like to hear about their favorite systems- that not the 360- they better search for other sites.

What notable PS3 exclusive games have they ignored?

Hearing Brad's impressions on 3DS backwards compatibility confirms it, there's literally no reason for me to get a 3DS on launch.

Wait, there's not full BC?
There is full BC, but the loading times are up to doubled, and the screen sizes and resolutions do not match 1:1 so DS games get distorted pretty badly, according to Bradley Shoemaker.

Also the 360 version is the version of multiplat games they most frequently receive from publishers for reviewing.

There is, but he wasn't to hot on it. Apparently there are resolution issues which caused some stretching, overall it doesn't seem like a DS game would look as good on a 3DS as it would on a DSi. Which I have, so there's no reason for me not to wait until the 3DS library builds up.

This is just one guy's impressions though.

I'm shocked by the DA2 disappointment here. (okay, maybe not) I'm currently in Act 3 and I'm still loving it. I can understand the hate for the recycled dungeons and backtracking but I really like how the characters keep growing on me and I like how the story threads continually grow. Plus, I love the banter and optional dialogue choices. The game part is alright but I love the dialogue.

Most will admit DA2 isn't bad but there are certain expectations behind a Bioware game and this one doesn't quite hit all of the right notes. I think a lot of it has to do with the retracted development time. Given another year, DA2 could have been special.

Yea, I agree. it looks like they basically reskinned the ME2 engine but wasn't able to create more unique locations and offer more "OMG" moments. Good thing the writing is great or I would be very disappointed like everyone else.

This would be awesome. Although when they have talked about a multi-platform game in the past Jeff usually mentions that he checked out the PS3 version too. Would be great if they switched it up a bit and played more PS3 versions of multi-plat games. :)

I'm curious to hear their thoughts on Crysis 2. I just ordered the game, should get it by Saturday. Looks like a nice change from the more scripted shooters out there.
