Giant Bombcast - 12/01/15 - Beast Meets West

He's definitely a huge dork, but he's pretty good. Adds a lot of intelligent discussion to the Beastcast.

That said, probably don't listen to his D&D podcast. It's got potential, but holyshit does he need an editor. 5 hours of character building, complete with 15+ seconds of dead air over and over? Nah, I'm cool.

by the time it goes cyberpunk i think it's better managed, but still. If you're gonna start editing a RPG session you might as well shoot yourself right now, that's so much stuff to timestamp and do while GMing

I can agree with this. I'd also add that he seems quite passionate and even a bit breathless in his opinions. It brings on a sort of charged atmosphere... but that's a stimulating thing, and it results in some very interesting discussion. Guy reminds me of Patrick in that he legitimately brings a new dynamic.

forget dan/patrick, I want to see austin v patrick talky heads talk time

Drew's got good taste in games (Etrian Odyssey, Rocket League, Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes)

Brad: "I don't write these emails"

Jeff: "Im beginning to think you write these emails"

:lol

And this is THE perultimate Dan episode.

Searching "@jeffgerstmann shenmue" on Twitter is both hilarious and sad. No new fnord from today's cast as of yet.

December 2014 was rough!

6.8 is many years ago, and yet yesterday. A series that was to be started as a late Saturn title is continued on the Playstaton 4. Such is the conundrum that is Shenmue.

Austin's berserker laugh is the stuff legends are made of.

Having listened to it now, I can agree with everyone else: great bombcast; definitely one of the best.

Brad was firing on all cylinders this week. His "I guess the Shader matches the drapes" joke was great, as was his loginomics joke. His jokes never get the laughs they deserve on the show.

NO CUSS WORDS THEREFORE NO HUMOR

I agree, actually. Brad's jokes are underappreciated.

Lemme just say this. Austin thinks it's ok to have some blowhard with an acoustic guitar at parties playing shitty song choruses.

Not a fan of Austin. Comes off as an ego head

I don't understand why posts like this aren't bannable. We know full well that most, if not all of the GB Crew lurk or post here, I don't get why we think it's okay to just trash talk members of them publicly like
a) it matters
b) our saying this will somehow change anything
c) it isn't completely mean and douchey

Seriously. These are human beings, they aren't living personas.

It doesn't have to be bannable, but having literally nothing to back it up just makes the person saying it look like a shithead.

He said it was necessary for SHITTY parties.

I won't disagree with that. My takeaway was that it was acceptable.

what if it's an air acoustic guitar

what's the status of the party then?

Still shitty! Depends really, if the person with the guitar is trying real hard to get laid, then it's shitty and he needs roughin' up. ESPECIALLY if they're trying to play a Radiohead song.

Just opinions, shitty as you may think them. I think banning people for not liking a member of a podcast is a little silly though.

It's not opinions I don't like, it's when the opinions are personal attacks. That Austin one was pretty mild, so a bad example, but there have been loooong discussions on these threads about people's dislike of Alex, or Brad's weight, or whatever where it got well past the point of our business to talk about.

I guess I just don't understand the value of that kind of discussion, it serves no purpose, and can only lead to people feeling bad.

Edit: But you're right, people are free to talk about what they want, that's true. Not my place to tell them they can't

People get banned for baselessly shitting on other GAF members. Since a few GB people have accounts, it's probably a bad idea to do it — and banning aside, it's probably just good practice to have some self-control when it comes to voicing an opinion. Or at least put some effort into it.

Oh. What you mentioned with the weight stuff or whatever, yeah, uh, that's way out of bounds.

There's a portly wrestler in Wrasslegaf we're not allowed to talk badly about anymore due to his weight, so I see your point.

The problem I have with Austin is that he is pretentious. The fallout discussion on the beastcast a couple of weeks ago was painful. He was talking over and shutting down the other hosts who were trying to bring up valid criticism.

Agreed. The man always seems to clarify his opinion and know his bias, and can talk around that. He can talk about things from the objective and subjective. "This part is broke, this is very niche, this handles well, I like this, I know this panders at me." I like it! He's incredibly bright and spirited.

Not a fan of Austin. Comes off as an ego head

It's important to speak passionately in their line of work. Does Jeff come off as an egohead? He speaks with a lot of authority. Maybe you feel he's earned it and Austin hasn't?

How so? I honestly don't remember him ever talking over others, at least any more than anyone else on these podcasts. Certainly don't recall him dismissing valid criticism. What episode was that?

if you swapped Austin for Patrick it would read identical to posts made when Klepek joined the team.

I'm finding that Austin's transition to being a duder has been incredibly smooth, especially given the backlash that came our around the time that Jason and Dan were hired and the strong anti-SJW nonsense that seemed to follow poor patrick the whole time he was there (probably still gets it these days but i imagine it's not as bad).

Austin not only feels like a great fit with the east crew but is so damn nice and funny that I don't know why people have issues with him. I kinda understood some of the patrick stuff since he would talk over folks a lot in the beginning and was seemingly trying to have jerk duels with Ryan at times but Austin comes off so damn likeable that the only thing I can think of as a reason people dont like him is that they may be allergic to intellectuals who aren't ashamed of voicing intelligent and well thought out opinions on something as silly as video games.

will listen to any podcast Austin Walker is on. no idea why anyone would dislike him. super smart bro with infectious energy.

fun episode though i am lookin forward to GBE proper tomorrow. even the discussion crowd is better....

You're really going overboard. I just said he's cunty a lot. That's all. You can like cunty people yet still recognize their cuntiness. And you can be chill and cunty.

I think he is awesome because he brings an academic and intelligent approach to the discussion, but yes he is prone to talking over people and dismissing them. The FO4 talk was a prime example.

because it's MY opinion?

But these are real people. Who have GAF accounts. Who read these threads.

Like, I don't think it's acceptable to just call another GAF member a cunt straight to his face but that's already happened earlier in this thread to Austin.

Just... be nicer and more tactful since these are actual people, not fictional characters in a drama about video games.

It's a Giant Bomb trope at this stage that whoever is in the Patrick/Austin position will just get shit on by certain people for totally bizarre reasons

I just don't get it

Ha! Jeff and Austin had a moment over Syndicate. Now we know the real reason he was hired. I bet there is a check box on their application: Did you like the Syndicate relaunch?
Anyone who leaves it blank goes straight into the trash pile.

I think Austin talks over people a bit too much on the Beastcast, but he usually has good points, so it's not a huge deal. To be fair though, it can be grating if you don't agree with what he's saying.
