Giant Bombcast - 12/01/15 - Beast Meets West

Utterly baffled by the love for Tomb Raider. I'm struggling my way through it now, and, it's just AAA-paint-by-numbers: the game, so far.

Don't tell me that :(

I had the same problem with the first game, which apparently everybody loved but me.

I think that at times too. He actually seems really intelligent when he speaks at times. So I can't believe it's not a tiny bit of an act

He says he got a 33 on his ACT and he likes wrestling so I bet he knowingly lets himself slip into character once in a while. He's like giant bomb jar jar binks, a highly competent sith who uses others' perceptions of him to his advantage.

I hated the first game really hard. From what I've heard about the sequel, it sounds like the sort of title I can be indifferent towards. Huge improvement all around.

Austin, if you read this, was your "back...and to the left" during the black Friday talk a Seinfeld magic loogie reference? If so, no one gave you credit and I enjoyed it.

It's a reference to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Specifically, the Oliver Stone film "JFK"

Kevin Costner's character shows the Zapruder film in court and repeatedly replays the moment JFK's head jerks "back and to the left" as proof of JFK having been shot from a different location than where Lee Harvey Oswald was at.

I liked the first one well enough and people talking it up had me frothing at the mouth for the sequel, but honestly it feels like more of the same with some better parts, a lot of better parts, but it won't change the way you look at the game, I don't think. I do like it. I just expected to go insane over the sequel, and I didn't. I just enjoy it.

Not a fan of Austin. Comes off as an ego head

He's definitely a huge dork, but he's pretty good. Adds a lot of intelligent discussion to the Beastcast.

That said, probably don't listen to his D&D podcast. It's got potential, but holyshit does he need an editor. 5 hours of character building, complete with 15+ seconds of dead air over and over? Nah, I'm cool.

The first game was/is very polarizing, but it depends on what you didnt like about it really. RotTR is essentially a much more realized take on the first game.

I like Austin. If anything he sometimes seems like he's toeing line and afraid to get into it about stuff sometimes.

Alex drives me up a wall sometimes. I like it when he's being casual and frank about stuff. He showed that good side on Scoops & The Wolf a lot. What I don't like is when he goes into his pessimistic "The world is shit" tirades, that's blaaaaaaaah. Feels like he's compensating for something. Especially when he does his, "oh my life is a black whole of no escape routine".

Can someone point me to this alternate universe content where Austin is an egotistical bully? It sounds fascinating and I want to check it out.

there is no example. when Austin gets passionate about something some people think he's being an ass. dude is just having a discussion.

Alex seems like the most boring dude on the cast without anyone to bounce off of to me. Scoops and the Wolf back in the day made this clear enough to me. Austin I have no issues with personally seems fine.

I feel like I completely under appreciated Alex Navarro until he moved to the Beast Cast. He's a shining black hole now. Even coming back to the West Coast I still have the same heightened appreciation.

I similarly under appretiated him until he and Patrick started Bombin' the AM with Scoops and The Wolf. I still miss that show, it was even better then the Beastcast at discussing the weeks game news IMO. Alex's personality really grows on you, once I listened to enough shows with him I came to really love his contributions to the site.

Best podcast in a while!

Curiously enough this podcast make me realise Jeff is the only one I actually dislike

- Casual misanthropy CHECK
- Recycled jokes CHECK
- Hating everything and everyone CHECK
- Why would you do that instead of --rant-- CHECK
- Dismissing everyone else's opinion CHECK

Maybe it's just an act, but mhee it just got old for me

The Fame Douglas bit is gold because of the repetition.

The joke Austin made was "Unkill Han" not "Until Han". Seems like everyone misheard him, which is a shame. A++ pun work.

Man I'm excited for the Beastcast. Should be fun.

Do you like gaining XP? How about headshots? Stealth kills? Nice looking landscapes? Challenges? Side quests? Crafting? Then, you'll like Rise of the Tomb Raider.

If you're looking for literally anything else, you'll be bored.

Yeah Austin's timing is amazing with that stuff. He's so much funnier than he's given credit for.

When Small Business Man made a return for the first ad I cracked up. GB is the only place where I look forward to hearing the ads, that continuity.

It's been a while since I listened to the Bombcast. I listen to the Beastcast every week, it comes across as much more positive, and their more capable of a discussion.

Jeff can be (is) very funny, him and Vinny are great together, but I can't disagree with any of the above, the bombcast has too much of that

It's so wonderful to have different GB members interacting. I wish they'd do a crossover-Skype cast once a month or something!

The discussion about how Shenmue sucks because it doesn't follow the open world blueprint laid out by games that came after was odd. Austin kinda touched on it when he said he wouldn't want a Ubisoftified Shenmue and it was kinda brushed off but it sucks that every open world game now basically follows the same formula. It's kinda like the view that multiplayer shooters de facto need a slowly metered out system for weapons from a couple podcasts back.

I'm not defending people who seriously make petitions to get the game made but I can understand why there would be such a fervent fanbase when more than ever it stands out. It's kinda like how Metroid games have been kinda subsumed by the larger Metroivania label. Axiom Verge was a nice reminder of how much better Metroid type games are without the vania baggage.

Dan and I have the same ACT score? Oh no.

I kid, I kid. Dan actually probably is a genius. After all, his anxiety book is supposedly pretty good from all accounts, and he's an excellent businessman.

Haven't listened to the Bombcast yet, but there is a GZA song where he works in all the NFL teams in his lyrics (except the Falcons for some reason). It's "Queen's Gambit" from the DJ Muggs vs. GZA - Grandmasters album.

I don't know of a Wu song that goes through the baseball teams.

Ah. Ok. Now I get it. Jeff was saying their NEXT song would include baseball teams because it was the "cool thing to do now". Heh. Thanks!

The long food discussion in the middle of the podcast was funny but it also shows how Brad has zero control in the podcast room. Dude tried and wanted to move on but never had the power to do so. It's funny hearing him host cause it's obviously not something he excels at but it does provide some great moments.

i really don't think he wants to break up what is obviously a funny segment but is instead (deliberately) adding to the comedy of the situation

They had 8 people this episode. He's had to host with that many people in the room how many times?

Not to mention the fact that letting a bit run it's course is what makes the podcast so good. I do wish he could make up his mind with emails quicker though. I loved Vinny forcing him to ask stuff.

I'm not sure it was discussed yet but does anyone know what they actually censored? Or was that whole thing just a joke. (It was right at the beginning of the doa conversation)

Eh. If I could easily just wander into a public forum and read anonymous internet people picking apart my personality, I'd probably struggle with depression and anxiety issues as well (which Alex has touched on in the past).

Dude strikes me as very intelligent, but also a little bit shy. His pessimism is a defense mechanism, methinks.

I like every single person on this episode. Just a bunch of sweeties.

That's more like it.

From what I've seen, people's negativity toward Austin is almost always unsubstantiated and comes off as a negative reaction to someone bringing a more cerebral perspective on games to the table. It often reeks of anti-intellectualism.

Brad always sounds like he's holding in a monster bong rip. Not a complaint. Just an observation.

I can agree with this. I'd also add that he seems quite passionate and even a bit breathless in his opinions. It brings on a sort of charged atmosphere... but that's a stimulating thing, and it results in some very interesting discussion. Guy reminds me of Patrick in that he legitimately brings a new dynamic.

I could listen to Austin talk the smarts to me for hours and hours. I can't grasp how folks don't like him!

*swoon*

I think he's alright, but he's a little too serious at times and will go nuts anytime someone mentions something about a law/rights, he'll talk about it for too long and bore me

For sure. I actually think Austin's thoughts on games/gaming/the industry surrounding them tend to be more interesting than Patrick's were, though I would love to have both of them at the table for GOTY discussion. Smart people. The industry needs more like them.

''Untill Han'' Was the most hilarious thing I have heard all week. Bloody great Podcast, also loved the discussion they had on DOA Volleyball 3 and I agree with them on everything.
