Giant Bombcast - 12/01/15 - Beast Meets West

I don't want to be disingenuous but I'm an American and I meant it like an American. Eeep.

And again, like even you mentioned, I -like- Austin a lot. I like his perspective. He just acts like a weenie sometimes, just like how he no-sold Dan's earnest question.

Oh, well. God dammit Vince. You've let me down again. Why are you always such a villain?

My point stands, though! Don't jump down someone's throat for using a word that has a totally different context in a different part of the world.

It felt to me like his original point was that we shouldn't think of this as some massive triumph for YouTubers everywhere as a bunch of people on Twitter were the day before. And I was surprised that everyone seemed to disagree. Then it all kinda went sideways as the arguments continued.

I agree, but I also think that they were trying to shoot down the cynicism because it is a big step--since there wasn't one before, and being overly cynical about things when you yourself haven't been in that position is a great way to be a jaded fuck.

It's a bit silly to argue about someone's personality--but it wasn't a disagreement so much as it was ignoring empirical evidence from the mouth of people that have literally been there and have had to deal with it.

Also, I think you're latching onto a specific word that is used far more liberally in different parts of the world and in a far different context.

If we're discussing the Youtube discussion, Austin was right to assert that their statement wasn't a confirmation that they'd go to bat for people faced with video takedowns — Vinny's assessment that it was a start isn't the takeaway from the discussion people should have, especially if they're relying on content they put out on Youtube. Austin mentioned he knows people who try to get their content out over Youtube, and he probably doesn't want to give them or others like them a false sense of security when it comes to having their work potentially sabotaged.

If we're talking about someone personality/character, and if that's stupid to argue about, then saying Austin's pissy/salty/cunty, without even trying to back it up, is dumb. When people don't articulate what they mean, it's often because they know they can't justifiably hold that opinion — considering I've seen a few people outright say they don't like how "intellectual" Austin is (and this can't be the only one), it's just ... sad. Sad to see someone who actually knows what they're talking about be met with criticism by people who are selectively allergic to critical thought.

That's ridiculous. Definitely not what I'm talking about. Hope I'm not getting mixed up with that weird veiled shit.

I don't think I've ever actually posted on the forums, how are they? Good community? How active are they, they seem to move kind of slow (and I don't just mean that in the way everything moves slow compared to Gaf).

I barely post in the forums there too. I only participate in the chat. I prefer just chatting about GB stuff with GAF.

I think the waters get a bit muddied when you're talking about a person and how their personality strikes you because ultimately it's a pretty subjective thing (in most cases). Looking for evidence to back up your every assertion about how you feel about certain people is almost literally what happens on Twitter with the million imgur photosets with tiny red arrows all over the place.

That is to say, it's creepy. You can have an opinion of someone's general behavior/how they present themselves and their arguments without having to point to exacting examples of why that bothers you.

As for the intellectual part--I agree. Austin has never given off any pseudo-intellectual vibes where he's trying to tell you about what he knows rather than trying to share what he knows in an engaging way. It's reasonable to outright despise someone who engages in that behavior, but Austin doesn't. So disliking someone for having critical analysis and thoughts is pretty sad.

I feel like I completely under appreciated Alex Navarro until he moved to the Beast Cast. He's a shining black hole now. Even coming back to the West Coast I still have the same heightened appreciation.

It's reasonable to give a reason for a publicly announced statement — otherwise, what's the point? To hear yourself talk/see yourself type? Surely anyone can understand how that criticism of

You can say "lol, GB sucks," but that doesn't mean you're absolved of being held accountable for it, or for someone asking "why do you think that?" There's always a reason, so just post it. If you don't have a reason, or if you can't think of one, maybe step back and reflect on your own feelings — it can't hurt, especially if you have the time to post about it on a forum in the first place. Sorry for expecting discussion on a discussion forum, I guess? Unless you think GAF is a a Twitter feed.

Is the yearly the only way to get "Access to exclusive content, no ads"?

Silver tier and Gold tier is the same. Silver is just 3 months, iirc.

The two options are the exact same except monthly is billed monthly and yearly is billed... yearly. Also, yearly comes with a $15 discount voucher for the merch store.

Same content on both.

This is a discussion, though! Using a common shut-down mechanic of, "Oh, I guess I was wrong and you're right," is a fairly juvenile thing to do, though.

Maybe it's not the precise discussion you wanted to have--but it's a discussion nonetheless.

Now, I'm not advocating putting your head into the sand and never trying to figure out why you feel the way you do. But asking for specific examples is weird when it comes to things like personality. It's totally valid to say, "I dunno, they just come off that way." Personalities just don't mesh sometimes and it becomes incredibly harmful when you need to put a label of every reason you might not like someone. That's how you turn people into nothing more than a checklist of traits.

It's so awesome to have the GBeast group there for Jeff to Riff off of. I much prefer the Giant Beastcast, but clearly the best scenario is when they are together.

Also I think the people who dislike Austin are a little "cunty".

Brilliant episode, the crew is so good together.
I really enjoy listening to Vinny and Austin talk about just anything.

Vinny is cognisant and aware of others / the possibilities of different situations in a way that I really appreciate.

Man i can't believe we are in Patrick era hating with Austin as well.

At least it doesn't seem as bad compared to the eventual shit Patrick got right, right?.

Patrick's great. Austin's great most of the time.

Alex on the other hand, he has no redeeming qualities, save not hurting animals in games. That was a BRIEF glimpse into him being more than an automaton with newly-added swear words in his dictionary.

I don't hurt em either, Alex.

If you're not against the notion, then what are you ever trying to say? How is asking for reasoning/examples beyond nothing asking for too much? Because "nothing" is what I usually see when it comes to people saying Austin rubs them the wrong way. You genuinely sound like you're fighting against a strawman that is attacking people for having opinions, and as if you're advocating for people to fear/abandon some introspection.

If it's harmful to turn people into checklists, why even mention what you think of their personality in the first place? You're boiling them down to a characteristic, or the way they speak, or their perceived attitudes — all things I see happen in GB threads, unfortunately.

You clearly have a metric of what's acceptable when asking for someone to explain their opinion, but remember that that's not universal — similar to how "cunt" is not universally the same thing around the world.

Did anyone else notice the GBEAST guys were more relaxed and a whole hell of a lot less... I dunno "PC" when it came to joking around in this episode? I'm glad they weren't as uptight in the episode to work a little blue. Especially Alex, he didn't immediately bristle and shutdown like he normally does when Pervy games are brought up.

Maybe they'll do a Fusion Frenzy Frenzy.

.

Vinny and Austin are bringing out the best in Alex. Really seems like he's found his place in the BEast dynamic. I feel bad for ragging on Alex in the past, he's great now.

I'm hoping so bad to find this, because I've just GOT to be missing something with that fucker.

I think Tricky was his best partner and Vinny and Austin have become really good family for him.

Patrick was alright even if he took more time to get accumulated.

I highly disagree about Alex and having someone else there for him to work with has done wonders even if it came at a great cost (no more Patrick interaction).

Yep.

Him and Patrick did a good job as well and its a shame that went away

I love Austin, and I think he's a great addition to the team. If anyone feels like he's rubbing them the wrong way, and can't really articulate why, I would assume it's because like Patrick, he has a conversational style and personality that is simply kind of the opposite of almost the entire rest of the crew. Austin likes to not only express how he feels, but actively dive deep into why he feels the way he does, and that's a level of discussion that really only Patrick liked to engage in.

People tend to rag on Austin for the exact same reasons that people ragged on Patrick, and I can see why having that one outlier personality is a bit jarring. I personally love both of them, i've missed Patrick since he moved from San Fran, so I'm glad to have that kind of personality back. Personally I wish Austin was on West Coast, but beggars can't be choosers.

"What would you do if your ex starting working for Dave Lang?"
"Find out what happened with Arkham Knight."

I almost spit my water out.

I think it's the humor he brings to an overwhelmingly sunshiney group of people. Vinny and Austin are so silly and gleeful in a ton of stuff and Alex is the comical pessimist. That was WAYYYY harder to portray surrounded by fellow grouches. I think he was always great, just didn't have room to shine.

Alex is great, and has never been more entertaining than he is now. He knows his stuff and is regularly hilarious.

Hip-hop fans: Anyone know what Jeff was referring to with the Wu-tang clan and rhymes with baseball teams? Is it one of their songs?

Jeff Bakalar. Keeping everyone PC.

In the last year I have really come around to him. I think the BeastCast and before that, his morning show with Patrick have really helped him be less abrasive and just a better overall personality for Giantbomb.

Also he likes sports, so that's a plus in my book.

There's a big problem with this Bombcast episode. It's too good.

Liking it so far but in the first 30 minutes or so Austin has been pretty quiet. Though I guess that's what happens when you have 8 people in a room. I wish every bombcast had the whole crew. This is awesome.

You'll hear more from him, don't fret my duder.

It's really bizarre to see people try to paint Austin "there are no bad video games" Walker as some some of angry ranter. The guy gives every game the benefit of the doubt and then some.

Austin, if you read this, was your "back...and to the left" during the black Friday talk a Seinfeld magic loogie reference? If so, no one gave you credit and I enjoyed it.

Vince you need to learn when to turn the WrestleGAF off, my man

people were stanning it up over austin pretty hard in the GB thread this week tho

Best podcast in a while!

Curiously enough this podcast make me realise Jeff is the only one I actually dislike

- Casual misanthropy CHECK
- Recycled jokes CHECK
- Hating everything and everyone CHECK
- Why would you do that instead of --rant-- CHECK
- Dismissing everyone else's opinion CHECK

Maybe it's just an act, but mhee it just got old for me

Utterly baffled by the love for Tomb Raider. I'm struggling my way through it now, and, it's just AAA-paint-by-numbers: the game, so far.

Haven't listened to the Bombcast yet, but there is a GZA song where he works in all the NFL teams in his lyrics (except the Falcons for some reason). It's "Queen's Gambit" from the DJ Muggs vs. GZA - Grandmasters album.

I don't know of a Wu song that goes through the baseball teams.
