Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

This is the internet, last I checked hyperbole was a major part of it. I could just as easily say you're getting too worked up over a post on a forum, at the end of the day it bothers me that people will watch these videos and OPT not to play the best game ever made, but I won't lose any sleep over it and you know it, so why make such a passionate response (to play devil's advocate to your own argument)?

Rape is serious business. Video games aren't. Your response shows that you still clearly don't understand this.

You can say I'm over the top, but I find it hard to believe anyone can DEFEND the integrity of the journalism at play here. Even if you find this specific game to be unimportant, surely all of us can recognize that the connection between being respected game journalists and an expectation of some videogaming competency should exist. This is the kind of thing that if they had written an actual review showing it (Such as that old Mass Effect review by whoever-the-fuck-don't-want-to-look-it-up where he clearly was just incredibly bad at the game), we would burn any other reviewer alive for on these forums. Why should they get a pass because they're Giantbomb again? Even if they say they like the game despite it being thoroughly 'confusing' from their perspective, it really brings into question the capabilities of these individuals to be rating games in the first place when they can't experience them at a level even remotely approaching a standard gamer.

Please don't use the word journalism without understanding what it means. I apologize for being a dick, but you're (unintentionally) very good at pushing my buttons to find my pet peeves, and this is another one of them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journalism

To wit: video game reviewers are not journalists. The only part of what Giant Bomb does that falls under the category of journalism is the reporting that Patrick does on issues in the industry. The correct term is "enthusiast press." So to trumpet the "video game journalistic integrity" argument is silly.

Their only responsibility to you is to be honest about their experience, and brutal honesty is something that Giant Bomb has in spades over other game sites. Their transparency and honesty is why they have such a following: you know that you're never going to be lied to, or have anything glossed over or covered up. You may not agree with them, or think that they're particularly good at games, but they never censor themselves - and that's why I trust their opinion over any other site..

It's almost as bad as watching someone run into the first goomba on Mario Brothers over and over

someone who booted up Halo and ran around for 2 hours shooting at the walls in the first room?

Hyperbole, again. These examples aren't proving your point.

It's not that hard to carry on a conversation and still comprehend some basic text, even at 'skip it' speeds.

Then you go do it. Get some capture equipment, record an LP of Chrono Trigger, and make it interesting to watch without screwing up, or replaying sections when you screw up. Then come back and tell us how it went.

The more I watch this endurance run the more painful it gets. It honestly feels like rape to see a pair of grown game industry veterans be THIS bad at a very easy game. I mean, come on how many of us got stuck in Chrono Trigger EVER, even as kids? .

This is probably the best post I've ever read on GAF

It's a huge disservice to the game (since i'm sure it makes it look awful to anyone who hasn't played it, I would certainly think it does), and a huge disservice to the notion that these guys are remotely trustworthy in regards to forming opinions about a product

You would have more of a point if it weren't Chrono Trigger (and If you hadn't said that other shit you said previously), CT's status is set in stone. Also, it's pretty clear that the problems they encounter getting lost are personal ineptitude, it's pretty severe, Ryan even comically owns up to it because it's that obvious.

It would make more sense if you were talking about an instance (there are some) on GB where they slag a newer game and then not only, not own up to it, but blame the game instead of themselves. That isn't the case this time, this is just kinda silly and a bit embarrassing.

I have no idea why anyone would not play Descent Freespace 2 based on these videos, but okay.

Journalism? A) This is an endurance run. There's no journalism. It's primarily entertainment. B) Reviewing games isn't journalism either.

Even if you find this specific game to be unimportant, surely all of us can recognize that the connection between being respected game journalists and an expectation of some videogaming competency should exist.

A) Not all of us agree that there's any connection. B) Playing CT's first few hours somewhat poorly doesn't say anything either way about competency. C) Again, journalism isn't the word you want here.

It's almost as bad as watching someone run into the first goomba on Mario Brothers over and over, and then realizing that this is the person whose opinions are disseminating to your peers. It SHOULD bother people.

Why?

The way "I like" ? You mean...the only way to play it?

As other people have pointed out, getting lost in the forest isn't unique to giant bomb. It happens to people. It happens when you're dealing with a game that is completely new to you, and when you're not used to playing old games (or rather, games that don't signpost where you're supposed to go). Fact of the matter is that there isn't only a single way to play it. Saying there is again makes you sound like a crazy person, though there's really no backing down from the rape comment.

Maybe Ryan will transition into an older game mentality and start paying more attention to the text, maybe he'll wander, lost, throughout the entire game. It's far too early to tell, especially since they're still getting their grips on how these games play.

Would you trust an opinion of someone who booted up Halo and ran around for 2 hours shooting at the walls in the first room?

This is a poor analogy for what happened in the ER, unless again you're trying to be hyperbolic. They didn't get stuck in Crono's house playing with the cat for the first two episodes. Besides that, maybe. Maybe if I see someone sucking real hard at a game I'd take their opinion on the gameplay systems with a grain of salt. Which isn't really applicable here. Their main mistake was skipping a few chunks of text and not really being that attached to the plot of the game. If Ryan tells me "CT's plot suuuucks", well... actually, I don't care what Ryan thinks about CT. I played the game 15 years ago, it was fun, his experience doesn't really influence mine.

Also this is why Giant Bomb puts bylines in all their reviews. If you think someone's taste in games sucks, or you think they're just unqualified, you can easily skip their reviews. Unless this is a stealth 'think of the metacritic' argument.

I'm getting tired of Patrick pretending he can't remember anything about the game. Personally I don't care if he has played it before and guides Ryan though but to be so blatant about it and then deny any knowledge is really annoying.

Other than that it's fairly entertaining. Makes me want to play through CT for the Xth time though.

Do you really think he would have let Ryan run through the forest for about 20 minutes if he knew what to do next? From the last episode they said Vinny had to tell them where to go.

It isn't so much exact directions and moment-to-moment play as it is larger story and general game beats.

Pack it up guys, this is the pinnacle of complaints.

And I was bitching about how people were acting yesterday. I wonder if they know that people on GAF feel like they're raping Chrono Trigger.

Watching episode 5, I'm trying to remember. Didn't CT have something about not opening chests in the past because in the future they'd be levelled up? Was this regular chests or just the 'sealed' ones?

damn son

It was pretty sad to watch them flail around, but even more sad to watch them not know what to do when they came back to it and just had to do it again.

I've been caught in that loop too, but I've never done it, had my save deleted, and done it again.

I hope things go smoother from here on.

I must say I am enjoying this much more then I would have thought, the commentary is great.

TheYanger you're being kind of a shithead here with the "rape" thing.

Anyway I'm just not finding it that entertaining because there really haven't been any jokes other than the Chrono head shaking thing. Laughing because you renamed the character something silly or shouting what's happening on screen in a loud voice like that's somehow a joke is YouTube LP level humor. I'm holding out for something better, but this is turning out just as mediocre as I expected.

Yes their is with almost all chest its better leave them early in the game and open them later because of better gear in the end.
But I'll bet that they will never know that until someone tells them that because the game never does.

And on EP5, it was great again I really enjoy it.
Sure sometimes its like GRRRR come on, but for me that is also part of the fun.

People are allowed to discuss what they like or don't like about this endurance run.

Although comparing it to rape is too much...

I am enjoying this Endurance Run but I just cannot see it being as funny as the previous ERs.

Are Jeff and Vinny planning to do the ER too?

Must better episode today. It's been well over a decade since I last played this game, so I can't remember what stuff they might be missing out on, but it seems like they made good progress today.

I'm not a huge fan of this endurance run, but it's starting to pick up. The only thing that's really bothering me is that they keep using combo techs and not single techs, even on single weak enemies. Bucca's single techs are never gonna get used. D:

Oh, and they never use Barle's heal spells and instead waste tonics even though she has full MP.

I suppose I'm now one of those "YOU'RE PLAYING IT WRONG" people now, aren't I? :'(

Some of you are the worst.

Yeah clearly Patrick knows and remembers more than he lets on, but it's more entertaining this way. I'm really enjoying it, I haven't played CT in over 10 years, and this is a nice way to reexperience it, lol. I certainly don't feel compelled to actually play a 16 year-old jrpg.

I'm the exact opposite. The most I watch, the more I want to go play my own game. While I have an SNES, I can't find my copy of the game (moved too many times - or maybe my little brother has it). But I don't have a DS and don't want to play the PS3 version since everyone says the loading is unbearable.

That's your problem, right there.

I'm just happy that no matter my criticisms of this ER I'll never be as crazy as TheYanger.

This ep was much better than the last (I really hope they don't have to re-do any more things and forget what they did the last time).

They are also at/past the point I played of CT so I think they are going into new ground. I know some spoilers of the game like the big bad and some choices that can be made but other than that I know nothing (like locations, other playable characters, bosses etc).

It's kinda getting me to want to play CT again. Especially as I gave up so soon.

I actually appreciate how the game doesn't spell that out, but it makes sense if you think about it.

If you open a chest in the past -> Obviously the chest can't have stuff in the future.

If you open the chest in the future, then go back into the past and open it again -> Profit!

Sure you created a paradox that technically should rip open the space time continuum, but, hey! More loot!

Pulled the stick out my arse, and now I'm back in. Episode 4 was so dumb, hopefully episode 5 includes some hilarity of a non-'oh geez everything is going wrong' variety. Still good though

I am enjoying this Endurance Run but I just cannot see it being as funny as the previous ERs.

I'm alright with this. I kind of like that Ryan+Patrick is less overtly silly, and the game doesn't really lend itself to super crazy situations. It's just a damn good 16-bit RPG. I'd rather they be themselves and find their own chemistry than try to emulate Jeff and Vinny's style. Let each ER have it's own flavor, I say.

No. Jeff has gone on record that he currently has absolutely no interest in doing an ER.

The whiners in this thread are proving to be an unexpectedly delightful bonus effect of this Endurance Run.

Yanger, I salute you.

Watching this Endurance Rape has got me really interested in playing Chrono Trigger. I'd heard good things but never really thought about it much, but it looks great and I like hearing about how short and easy it is. And Ryan apparently playing it so wrong makes me feel like I'm not spoiling it too badly for myself by watching the ER.

Funnily enough, the only thing I can't endure about this endurance run is this fucking thread (and giantbomb comments, while we're at it).

They are clearly reading the game. I can read everything that flashes on screen. They're not engaging it. Jeff and Vinny would make fun about the text they're reading because they had to wait for the voice actors to actually read the lines. Here, they're reading it. Sure, they skipped the "You should go get her back" line from the Queen, but I read it and I didn't remember/know where to go.

Sure, I wouldn't have come and gone through the forest 3 times, but it's not specifically clear where you're supposed to go next. I would've gone back to the room because that's how I play JRGPs. I go everywhere/talk to everybody before leaving a place.

This episode was much better, they even went back to get the Bronze Armor: Something they didn't need to do at all.

You people just don't like to watch others playing games. It's as simple as that. I wish somebody played Assassin's Creed 1 for me earlier this year, when I decided I wanted to join in the series and I wanted to see all the storyline elements.

TOday I came here to see if anybody had nice commentaries on today's episode, and all I see is everybody complaining about idiotic arguments (Hey, it's LITERALLY LIKE GETTING RAPED YOU GUYS) instead of highlighting the good parts of today's episode, like the future vendor: "hey, what do you have for sale"... "..motherfucking guns!". I had to stop the video a second so I could laugh.

That's the kind of shit this thread should be about.

Damn son. The rest of you guys need to step it up if you want to out crazy this post. Comparing it to the holocaust might be a good starting point.

Not unbearable, just not preferable. It'll fill the CT void in your heart, to be sure.

I do need it in my life, so I'm going to pick up the PSN version. If it is unbearable, I'm going to track you down and shake my head at you.

That's your problem, right there.
I don't know. Never owned a handheld and I've gotten on fine. I have been thinking about getting a 3DS or Vita - will probably go 3DS once they get a hardware revision. But I'm to weak to wait that long before play a little CT.

Really can't wait for Ryan's carefree approach to saving bites him hard in the ass. Frustrating to see him backtrack for some missed armor, use a shelter, but NOT save knowing the boss is ahead. Most shocking that Patrick never pipes up as a co-pilot to point out that stuff.

Keep walking that razor's edge...actually looking real forward to that moment when it all crumbles.

Endurance Rape, rofl
