Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

90% of the dialogue in Chrono Trigger is useless and/or dull, especially compared to today.

90% OF YOU IS USELESS AND/OR DULL!

Sorry. Sorry. I just...

I'm not rational when it comes to Chrono Trigger.

Also your opinions are bad and you should feel bad.

now I really want them to play chrono cross after this

(or barring that, xenogears)

I think there's little chance of them playing a game that could take upwards of 50 hours (especially with them NOT reading CT's text). There is little doubt they would find themselves lost time and time again. Especially in the Sewers (if they made it that far).

In this episode: They both admit they weren't reading the text. Ryan avoids as many enemies as he can and continues to save then heal.

Again why in hell did they choose a game without voice acting.

Also bought a copy off amazon before the ER started since I've never played this. REALLY not enjoying the storytelling/humor at all. Bah. Probably going to sell it already only 3/4 hours in.

I don't know if this is a game that ages well. I loved it when I played it as a kid and now I'm afraid to go back and ruin that memory. Is it like going back to watch an old favorite cartoon and then realizing how terrible it really was? Maybe nostalgia will blind me to its faults.

The classic SNES localization makes it all worth it. Love the jokes from Ryan and Patrick. The DS ver redid the translation, if you didn't know. They're still early in the game. The time travel stuff isn't even at its peak yet. 3-4 hours in isn't anything in a JRPG...

I played it for the first time through the DS release (and the Endurance run finally made me push through the rest of the Black Omen and beat the game this weekend) and I loved it. I prefer it to any Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest game that I've played. The battle system really feels like it was ahead of its time.

It holds up very well. I always come back to it.

3-4 hours is nothing in a jrpg I love like the persona series.

In a jrpg game I'm not enjoying anything of except the music? 3-4 hours is an eternity.

Takes time to build up the story and world especially with the time travel thrown in. You'll see since you're watching the ER. When they start fucking with the time, things change in other eras.

I think CT moves at a faster pace than most JRPGs these days.

Ignoring the NPC dialog (missing a small story beat involving the guy in the storage room) and not going back to the start to heal is bugging me. Watching someone play a game you've memorized is really difficult.

I've had a shitty day, GAF.

Let's see if Giant Bomb will give me some smiles.

Because playing in 45 minute stretches and doing that would make this ER veeeeery slow. I don't begrudge them that decision at all.

Wont they be under leveled sooner than later? The will have to grind won't they? Never played the game, only observation I have for it.

CT isn't a particularly hard game. It's better this way otherwise it will take forever.

man, lavos theme never fails to send chills down my spine. such an amazing villain theme

EDIT: lolwat in the comments
Is this pre-recorded ? I mean of course it is but they play it not is are they like finish like a month ago?
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Well, there's way too many boring fights in most RPGs and it kills the pacing, and Ryan wants to get to the more interesting stuff as quickly.

The game lets you avoid enemies, so Ryan thinks that's a viable tactic, but really you pretty much have to fight everyone anyway to avoid becoming underlevelled.

It's been a while since I've played and Chrono Trigger is better about this than most jRPGs, but I'm pretty sure that if you skip a lot of battles you will eventually run into a bossfight where you'll be forced to grind anyway.

BOBO...NEVER GIVE YOU UP
I rofld for 40 days and 40 nights. Kind of disappointed they didn't call him
Brobo
, though.

This is fun to watch, or at least kind of play in the background and watch a few minutes of, but looking at it I do wonder if we haven't surpassed it significantly in every way with dozens and dozens of newer games. Has time made it no longer a classic, and if so, I'm forced to assume that's true for the rest of the SNES JRPGs. I like Chrono Trigger a lot, and I liked it a lot when I revisited it 3 years later, and 6 years later, and maybe even 9 years later. But time may have finally left it behind. come at me bros etc.

This gets better, right? I only watched the first episode, and was losing my shit when it took him a full minute to figure out how to equip something.

Good episode. Again, healing is essential, but I think they're starting to get a hang of it. Maybe it's because I've played so many RPGs that I heal religiously, I dunno. It's best to try to top off HP as much as possible. Also, healing before saving makes sense.

It's nice to see they echoed how I felt about the future when I was going through this the first time ever, lol. "This place sucks." And definitely, you can hear Patrick just itching to say that he remembers a lot more than he's letting on (especially during the Rick Astley bit). A little disappointed they didn't get much out of their interactions with THE MAN (ah, I dislike how that translation was changed from the DS version; oh well).

I've gotta wonder if they're going to do any sidequests. The
Mother Brain
sidequest was kinda nice. I wonder if they're going to go back to do the Sewer Access? Better to do it now than later, but eh, they'll do it eventually.

Hey Bobo, do you object to your name?

I guess it's my own fault for jumping in too early. I knew there was time travel but didn't think it was THE thing about it. Can't think of a single show or movie with time travel that I didn't hate.

Tell you what.

Keep watching.

Then come tell us what you think after, say, episode 4 is over.

If you're trying to say that you hated the Back to the Future and Terminator movies, then I don't think we can ever be friends.

Just saw today's ep. It's been a long while since I played, I'm assuming if they had talked to all the NPCs at the beginning before diving into the dungeon area as opposed to bypassing them completely they wouldn't have been confused as to how they knew they were looking for the info center?

It seems like I'm closer to the end (or 'an end') of Chrono Trigger than I thought.

Late-late spoilers:

I just picked-up the game after two years away and fought through
The Black Omen
. Now I'm about to face
Lavos
. Will I get an ending after this?

If so, it's not the best way to go out. I have done nothing but battle since I started playing again. I have forgotten most of the story. Maybe I should just keep watching the Endurance Run to catch-up with the motivations.

They are getting better.

I wish Ryan would use techs and combos more during boss battles, and he should've went with Wait mode~

Edit: I also wish they'd talk to the NPCs. At least for more joke fodder.

Liking it more already, only starting the third episode now. That first episode was the wooorst.

EDIT: NOPE NEVERMIND HOLY SHIT EPISODE FOUR. I am convinced that they are trolling at this point.

I think its been great so far.

Not sure why everyone is shocked by how there playing, this is exactly what I would expect from Ryan Davis playing a JRPG. Patrick would have probably been a better choice to be playing, but eh.

Hahah. Oh man. Watching it and trying to pick up on all the things that will drive people crazy is great.

Someone really needs to teach Ryan how to use techs out of battle.

Healing character with near full MP? Nah, let's just use all these Tonics.

Ryan also needs to learn how to use techs in battle. Spoilers for this episode:
His poor health/MP management came within 1 HP of losing most of this episode's progress.
