Still haven't seen tonight's episode, but I just went on to HBO GO to watch and the next episodes of Girls and Enlightened are up (because of the Superbowl). So, if you have HBO GO... go.

I thought it was a really mediocre episode. Probably one of my least favorite ones of the series, if I'm being honest. Hannah and Elijah's adventure in cocaine land was pretty stupid and it seems to me like they're trying too hard to be zany and overtly funny this season. I'm not sure what happened, but I just don't find Girls very funny anymore. It's not grabbing me anywhere near as much as the first season did.

I agree. This season sucks compared to season one.

Agree with the bolded... but it's still different enough from the usual shit that I'll keep watching

Elijah is still my favorite character, but it seems like they are writing him weird this season. I agree with people saying that they might be pushing the "self aware" over the top aspect a bit too much in the last few episodes.

Though alternatively, I'm liking Marnie much more now. (Though I never really hated her to begin with.)

"She feels sassy."

Marnie proves yet again that she's a dumb shallow bitch. However, it's Hannah this week who takes things to a new level of absurd. She was extremely unlikable during the last ten minutes. When she blew up on Marnie, I was rolling my eyes so hard, hoping Marnie was going to lean forward and smack some sense into her.

Eli was spot on with his breakdown of Hannahland in the shop. He continues to be this seasons sole bright spot. He has the best comedic lines every week. Though because I watch the actors other show too, I'm having a hard time separating the two character's. They're very, very much alike.

Icona Pop was nice to hear in the club. Fun song.

Every girl in the show portrays the same character flaws. They are all dumb, they are all shollow, and they are all absurd.

- Fuck fuck fuck, this episode tore my heart out. mistakes girls make indeed. I think I was cringing for the entire ep.
- the coke thing can work conceptually, but the execution feels over the top. I understand what they're trying to do but I'm not sure if I like how it plays out. how cringe-worthy can Hannah get?
- the blow-up: it seems to reverse the conflict from the first season (Hannah had a secret, Marnie finds out, friendship is in trouble). so it feels a bit too familiar already. I hope they don't use this trope againin the near future
- I couldn't help but notice that Jorma showed his (blurred) junk onscreen :-/

Wait, people actually like Jessa?

I would be surprised if anybody liked any of the characters besides Shoshanna (<3). They aren't at all likable, but I don't think they are supposed to be. They are interesting enough that you (or rather, I) are compelled to watch and see what happens to them regardless of whether or not they are likable.

Shoshanna is super likable imo. I could see why some might find her annoying, but her naivete and sincerity is welcome among the other 3 characters.

Probably the best episode of the season so far. There was a better drama/comedy balance. I wish Jessa and Shoshanna had more screen time, though.

Not too impressed with the second season so far. Hannah's getting more annoying than usual. It's still hilarious, however it doesn't seem to have the first season charm for me. It seems like Elijah is taking over the role of funny guy from Adam this season (which is fine), but I miss Adam. :(

Glad that Marnie finally banged Booth though. The lack of Jessa, Shoshanna, and Adam is making the show bland. Kinda pissed that Adam went to jail and they didn't even remotely touch the subject in last night's episode. Is he still in jail? Like what the fuck.

At this point they should rename the show "Hannah" instead of Girls.

I mentioned this previously, but why is this show so critically acclaimed? The writing isn't amazing, the general story isn't amazing, the characters aren't amazing, what the hell am I missing?

is it critically acclaimed though? I'd say it's well received at most, because it's so different and usually executes well enough. When I hear critically accalimed I think mad men/breaking bad.

But the show will get a lot of mediocre reviews from time to time, like last nights episode seems to be getting.

It's pretty well documented that the show has been received in a more than positive light from reviewers/critics. Also, how different is it, really? Seems like Sex and the City "the early years" to me.

I feel like nothing happened in this episode. I know there isn't an overall story arc for the series but random shit like this one was kind of boring.

is it critically acclaimed though?

Yes. It's highly critically acclaimed. Rave reviews and handfuls of awards.

I'd say the first season deserved it, personally. The second season is producing more guffaws for me, but at the cost of more groans.

edit: It was the first week that I actually enjoyed Enlightened more than Girls. It might have been the first week that I sincerely even enjoyed Enlightened.

I'm quite positive the show has only won like....1 notable award for comedy series.

It's well received for sure in the comedy department but I sure as shit aren't seeing it on anyone's top 5 shows.

So basically what I said :P It made it onto a lot of people's top 10, I guess when I hear the words critically acclaimed I think of the shows that are in the top 3 on just about every single list there. Breaking Bad/Mad Men/whatever.

And also like I said, pretty sure the Globe is the only really notable award there.

To me Adam missing was probably because Booth is supposed to be pretty much the evil version of Adam. He's every horrible thing Marnie thought about Adam but then she went and fucked him anyway.

dude. It won one notable award. That is a FACT. The only thing I got wrong was that it JUST squeezed into some top fives.

It's received a Golden Globe, an Emmy, a TCA award, WGA accolitions, and most recently an AFI award. Those are all a pretty big deal.

Also here is a list of the critical reception to the first season.

Deserved or not isn't what we're discussing. Simply the reception - and calling it anything less than glowing from a critical standpoint is simply incorrect.

Simply because you don't feel an award is worthy doesn't change the fact that it has won several of them.

It won an emmy for casting OH WOW. The rest aren't notable to me.

And I said it was well received didn't I? To me when I hear the words critically acclaimed I think more shows that are more universally at the top, and consistently so. The Walking Dead has won more awards. It's a show lot of people like because it's a lot of fun, but I wouldn't call it critically acclaimed either. I'd also simply call it well recieved for the most part.

Doesn't change the fact that many reviewers/critics were/are in love with the show for reasons I don't understand. The only reason this show got a second season was because of the acclaim it got from certain entertainment outlets. It's numbers certainly weren't significantly better than other shows that were canceled.

I still think critics just like it more because it's different. I don't really know any other show like it on TV. It's pretty much the only place to get that fix. What that fix is I can't say exactly but I know it's the only place.

I thought it was a great episode. One of my favorites so far. I am talking S02e03, not HBO-Go 4th episode.

I thought it flowed super well, I was very happy to see Hannah and Elijah hang out and air out the dirty laundry and still be able to hang out.

Coke has never been more adorable
but I am in recovery myself, so addiction is no joke - the coke and (especially) heroin jokes were a little odd
.
Hannah was cute while high, running, high-fiving... then had a typical coke quick comedown which turned her into the heavy again.
Marnie taking it without a condom, come inside me style in the 'prone bone' position in Jorma's apartment made me laugh. "Are you on the pill?" "Ok... ungghhh...." Like a boss.
Where are the other girls? Very heavy Hannah Marnie episode.
It was interesting to see a person portrayed onscreen as gay, explain what CAN SOMETIMES be attractive about girls for him. To me he is bisexual, but Hannah and him have so much fun that you kinda hope they get together and be sexclusive.

The direction and use of music during the I Love It scene at Greenhouse were amazing.

Fuck fuck fuck yes yes yes yes yes, from the part in the bathroom, onward. Yes. Typical excellent music work in the show. I noticed this segment too and was super impressed at that Icona Pop tune.

This episode was amazing. One of my favorites.

And the scene between Hannah and Marnie was awesome and touching.

But it's not really different. I stated this before, but it's pretty much Sex and the City "the early years". Now, that is certainly a popular theme to expand on, but it isn't something that should be praised by so many. It definitely should not be looked at as a "new" or "innovative" idea.

You asked if it was actually critically well received. It was. That's pretty much the beginning and end of the discussion. Now you're floundering about that fact for unknown reasons.

Why you're bringing up TWD is beyond me. Just accept that Girls (as far as season 1 is concerned) is critically acclaimed and move on with your life.

I loved Glaze's line "Like in Extremely Loud and Extremely Close" especially if you've seen the movie.

How come he didn't get to go to the Bone Zone like everyone else?
