Gloom & Doom - UMD Dumping Utility Circulating The Internets...

There has recently been a UMD Dumping utility circulating around. As we do not want to advocate potential piracy, we will NOT be hosting the file or telling anyone where to get it, so please do not ask. Any comments or forum posts that give links to this will be immediately deleted.

This program will dump the UMD contents into a file called UMD.ISO on your memory stick. There are no menus or controls, executing the EBOOT.PBP file on your PSP begins the process. When executed, the following messages are reported:

more bad news for the PSP...

HAHA. Best thing about this piracy is that it might enocurage Sony to include something GOOD with the next update. Like a browser, chat, email etc. Otherwise we really will all stick with 1.5

Sony could very easily include the update with new runs of their games as well as new games, and encourage third parties to do the same. It's happened in Japan already.

What would be interesting is if someone ripped those games and removed the need to install the firmware update before playing the game.

Agreed. At least with Xbox, if you mod the thing it's pretty certain Live isn't going to work.

Those with legit (read: updated) PSPs should similarly have something to hold over the heads of the pirates.

Are there any legitimate reasons for ripping an ISO of a UMD? Or is this solely of use to pirates?

If the latter, why are we discussing it?

What's new in this update? Still just security stuff?
You can now view music videos from the music menu.
(and a security update on the side).

Hmm, if I can buy a game that requires a 1.5 upgrade, and then rip it and play from the memory stick after applying a patch, does that count as piracy?

Reduced loading times and reduced power consumption. But given the cost of MS Duos, it's not a very practical solution for most games.

Ah, that makes sense indeed. I assume this refers to music videos from the UMD, not the memory stick.

Btw, I hope they will allow to create a proper MOVIE folder and just drag and drop unrenamed MP4 files in it in the future. I really don't get why they did the whole movie thing the way it is now.

Hmmm. I rarely am playing more than one game at any given time, so having that game parked on a 1 Gig stick would be very convenient.

How large are image files for typical PSP games anyway?

The games are usually .9 GB right now, 1.8 if they use dual layer.

But we know that good crackers may reduce this by a good amount, either do they rip stuff like movies or in many games most of the space isnt used anyway.

I would buy the games anyway if I play them, but having 2 or 3 on a 1gig memory stĂck with faster load time and lower power cunsumption would be great.

I'm looking forward to playing games from the memory card.

When the PSP was first announced, I thought that it would not be long before the mod community enabled you to play ripped UMD games from memory sticks.

This is a great idea. I'm very happy to buy product and then put it on a memory stick. Sony won't suffer any loss of revenue from me. But I appreciate that it does open the door for simple and effective piracy.

I've been ripping DVDs and playing movies on my PSP since day 1, this is no different. But I have already purchased all these things legitmately.

However, there is no loader for these dumps (on 1.0 or 1.5+ PSPs) so dumping these files has only investigatory and exploratory use. We report this as news, not as encouragement for UMD ripping.
So you can dump them but you can't play them....yet.

Since PSP games require constant UMD access (unlike PC games) I would assume that "patching" a PSP game would require considerably more effort and may or may not be feasible, even if loading off a memstick were possible.

Ehh ... seems like a long shot.

wrong.

live works fine as long as you turn the mod off and didnt change your hard drive after using live the first time

hell, even those crazy softmodders use live...

And keep a PSP on the side to be modded... after each firmwire update you're going to start to see games that won't play unless you have the latest firmwire installed(I think we've already seen that), but since not everyone has an Inet connection(I know, crazy right?) I'm not sure what they are going to do, unless they are also going to start including the firmwire updates on the games themselves...

Yes, the upgrade is included on all new games. Until today, the new Japan games have all had 1.5 firmware updates. I guess they'll move to 1.51 or 1.52 soon though. You still have to plug into the mains before you can run it though.

They have already started. Recent games ask you to install the latest firmware (included into the UMD). If you don't intall it, they wont run at all.

Edit: fuck JR ;)

Man, would it fucking kill Sony to toss in some usability improvements with these firmware updates? Maybe then they could get people to actually upgrade. Fuck web browsing and email, I'd be happy if they improved the pathetic performance of the image viewer, added a bookmark feature to the movie player, and added said bookmark feature as well as the Go To feature to the audio player (not everyone listens to 3 minute songs). That would thrill me. And if they were really nice, they'd allow MP4s to actually use the PSP's full resolution. But nope, we just get "durr security update!"

I've seen rips with differing sizes than these, and I bet half of them aren't going to work.

While I have little faith that it will occur, playing games from the memory stick would be absolutely awesome. The loading should (hopefully) become MUCH faster and battery life should improve.

Still, it doesn't seem too likely...

looks like people made quick work of the ripper

it's a good thing for sony that none of that stuff actually works...

though if the tides change, sandisk could be the big winner

Well, you can expect a longer life from your optical drive, I always rip a game on to the HD of my xbox when I know that I will play that game for a long time, plus the load times are 1/3 of the normal time.

As of yet, this can't be used even by pirates. Regardless:

E. Emulation/Piracy

The topics of emulation and piracy, including the technical nature of emulators and ROM images, hardware modification technology, as well as their effect on the industry as a political topic are deemed to be generally acceptable.

Linking to pirate download sites, directions on how to get pirated software to work, reviews or impressions of pirated software will all result in the banning of the user in question.

You know, I'm getting real sick of how every other non-mod these days seem to find it funny or smart to quote the ToS just for kicks. Most of us can read it, the rest that can't deserve to get banned if they break ToS and the mods couldn't give half a shit about people who think they can police the forum part-time. :D

At worst rampant piracy will be great for hardware sales.
That would be an awesome scenario. If Sony loses money because of the boost in hardware sales, and has no software sales to help them get out of the red, it might really hurt them.

Regarding the me-too and smarmy tone of your post, the board was asked why we were discussing this and who it benefitted and I responded. Hate to break it to you, but you still aren't in line to become a mod.

Everyone was asked questions > no one directly answered both questions despite the asnwer being a click away. That was the flow of my thoughts when I made that post.

Which will in turn be bad for Sony if software doesn't sell cause their losing on each unit of hardware sold.

Honest question, are they losing money on the North American sales? Everyone assumes so, but people's perceptions of hardware costs are highly inflated and the shit they're packing in doesn't cost $50 over the base unit.

Are their royalties on UMD movies? What about the indirect sales of MemoryStick? It would be neat to know.

PSPahcker.com has an article on this that says running games from memory stick will at least take a lot of time to crack if at all possible.

actually, isnt Piracy a good thing for console-sales?`
More users who have the console = more developers will do games for it..

C64 = lots of piracy.. just needed a doubledecker to copy most games.
The result was that it was one of the most sold computers, and most gamedevelopers for it.

Amiga was the same.. it dies cause of those Doom-games unfortunatly..

PSX = sold lots cause of piracy too..

I think it goes both ways. Dreamcast = maybe the easiest system for pirated games ever and the system died out. I don't think it died because of piracy, but piracy obviously didn't help sell the system
