This comes from Ronald D. Moore, a highly successful TV writer and producer, who's currently overseeing the journey of Kratos to the small screen, even if he can’t make heads or tails of the video games.

Moore made an appearance on The Sackhoff Show with Katee Sackhoff, where his current workload came up. "Right now I'm working on the adaptation of this video game called God of War, that Amazon has ordered two seasons of and they asked me to come in, I'm literally in the writers room and that's my new thing," he says.

Having not played video games since arcades in the ‘80s, the whole property is new territory for him. He admits to trying out God of War, but found the quickfire action stylings of Kratos and his crusade against other mythical beings to have a harsh learning curve. "The controllers now…" he laughs, "Press R1, which one's R1, oh I'm dead! I can't quite get a hold of that."

:(

I hope he has good writers who actually care about the game

If Amazon was happy with the terrible LotR show, they definitely can see the success in this.

wow he wrote for Battlestar Galactica. Technically New-GoW should be easy to translate to TV shows than Halo.

Mark my words: Its going to suck

Edit: Although I don't have any streaming service (nor will I even have one), I've had hours upon hours of entertainment watching youtubers dissecting and making fun of all the other trainwreck Amazon/Disney series. I'm now looking forward to this one as well.

"Oh wow this is the material? No I think we can do better! Let's get some things changed, gamers don't care about story so we can fix what's here"

Pretty sure he developed or co-developed the 2004 version and was heavily involved in the first season which is still some of the best scifi on TV in the early 2000s.

He also co-created For All Mankind - which also had 2 amazing seasons and a frustrating 3rd season. Haven't gone to watch Season 4 yet.

Remember Star Trek without Star Trek?
Funnily enough, Moore also worked on TNG and Deep Space 9

Oh wow, that’s some of my favorite sci-fi on TV. Battlestar Season 1 was very very good. And I loved first two seasons For All of Mankind (dropped it after a few episodes of 3rd).

Can we have this guy do proper Mass Effect show instead?

Yeah, season 3 was rough. Especially with how strong season 2 was.

And Mass Effect would have been perfect for him. He also developed the TV adaptation of Outlander, so the romance part would be covered lol

Ronald D Moore has an excellent track record. One of the best tv writers in the business. He wasn't my first choice because I think he excels more with sci-fi and politics and I felt Steven DeKnight would have been perfect and he wanted to do it. Michael Hirst would be my second choice and Stephen Butchard would have been my third choice. I was disappointed that none of them were picked, but I'm not upset with the choice of going with Ronald D. Moore.

I loved TNG and I loved Battlestar Galactica.

Hah, my wife loves Outlander.

Yeah, that would have been such a great fit. Instead we will hear calls of “Boooooy” or is it “Theeeeem” since it’s Amazon TV after all! 😉

Very competent guy and I was stoked for this until I read he doesn't know how to hold a controller lol. I hope he at least watched someone play through the games and that Santa Monica is helping him with it.

Will execs ever learn that adapting video games to movies with creatives uninterested in said video games just doesn't work? How do you expect to attract the fans of an IP if you don't understand the appeal of the game or "do something different"? This feels DOA unless there are mostly gamers in the writing room.

Y'all bring up Rings of Power a bit and it sucked, but Fallout was an Amazon show that knocked it out of the park. Jon Nolan (the writer) is clearly a gamer though and seems like he worked with Todd Howard on it.

I mean he can just learn about the script or watch a playthrough. Nothing wrong in admitting he sucks at games. Being able to play isn't a necessity in knowing the lore/character of a game.

Yep. That's why I said:

I trust that he can make a good show. But we've seen what happens when people think they're smarter than the writers who wrote the source material.

Anyone who knows Ronald D. Moore knows he'll go deep into the lore of God of War. Just because he doesn't have the experience to play the games doesn't mean he won't watch a playthrough and read all the documentation that Santa Monica has.

Also for those still clamoring for the Greek Saga, it's largely unworkable for a tv show. There aren't enough character moments in the show to build hour long episodes around. This show isn't going to be a 90s style monster of the week show. And if that's what you're looking for, you might as well go watch Hercules or Xena. Compare those shows with its successor which was Spartacus and you'll see that you need a tremendous amount of character moments to make a compelling tv show. Ironically even Hercules and Xena have more character moments than the original Greek Saga God of War games.

The Norse storyline is absolutely built to make a tv show around it and any greek saga stuff should be kept to flashbacks.

I've put this challenge towards people many times, but no one is up for it. If you truly think the greek saga is a good idea, please tell me a single show that has been successful built around the premise you're looking for, which is built almost entirely around one character.

It seems like a lot of gamers are afraid that a successful God of War norse show will give even more proof that it was superior to the Greek games that they've convinced themselves is better than the recent games. Stop caring what other people think and enjoy the things you enjoy.

Samurai Jack

Amazon is gonna fuck this up so bad!

They'll start with the Norse era, giving the audience entirely no context to who the character of Kratos is. They'll emasculate Kratos in the first episode and have him getting cucked by Feya as his wife's secret lover. They'll race and gender swap Atreus and make him into a black-Hispanic lesbian, girl-boss Mary-Sue.
What did you expect? The first episode starting as a soft porn with Kratos fucking some greek goddess like those mini games from the old games?

I said sucessful and a show, a show meaning live action, not a cartoon/anime and not a movie... But you knew that. The fact that you ran to cartoons is kind of self evident...

It was successful, and it was a television show. Surprised to see you so critical of animation considering your weeb name and avatar.

It was a MA rated, 5 season series praised by fans and critics alike, that told a compelling narrative through episodic format focused on a single main character, with an emphasis on combat.

I think you have a skewed view of what is considered successful. I also think you don't understand Sony's transmedia strategy or most companies.

Do you see any big game franchise based on Samurai Jack? Why not if it was so successful? It's only gotten some A games.
