Godzilla |OT| Legendary

Big thing that irked me was the bridge scene.

Why did they block the evacuation? Bus guy was able to drive right through....so why was there a holdup?

Half of the bridge was cleared for military use. The other half for civilian, which was backed up with traffic. The bus driver decided he had enough of the traffic, went through the police barricades and drove on the relatively clear side of the bridge made for the military. Other cars followed him.

"GAF's biggest wanker"
Except he does it twice in a span of five minutes in a 2 hr movie. :(

It's just dumb fan service.
And? Godzilla promptly collapses afterward. Doesn't seem like a huge stretch to infer that using his breath is costly. "Dumb" fan service would have involved much more liberal and wanton use of his breath, I'd think.

This is getting utterly silly. it never ceases to amaze me how you start to fill your own blanks. Now we are educating others what a lizard was thinking? He was convinced? Really?

Thank god we have a reptilian behavioral specialist on site :(

You keep explaining there's an explanation except you provide no context and merely point to plot devices and rather than take them at face value, you string together your own theories. That in no way provides enough context to defend the movies shortcomings.

The movie shows or explains most of what is necessary in the film. So filling in the blanks usually isn't really that necessary in this.

Except in the case of what was quoted because Godzilla does what he feels like >=o

Some of you are overly critical and it makes me wonder how you can enjoy films at all. I don't find enjoyment in dissecting plots of films in order to find fallacies and inconsistencies. Our own lives are filled with plot holes, because we do shit a lot of the time that doesn't make sense. I'm not excusing jarring plot holes from films that really take away from enjoying them, but is Godzilla really a movie that has this incredible amount of inconsistency? Most of you say it has no plot to begin with.

We can agree to disagree, but I cannot and should not expect a movie to tie in every single knot perfectly. There will be cracks in between and things will sometimes not make sense, but if overall the movie is coherent and delivers, I find it rewarding and entertaining.

Specifically concerning Godzilla, if there was any major plot hole, I missed it, which means the movie did a good job at either concealing it, or not having one to begin with.

Keyboards: Major plot hole.

Liked the movie LOVED the monster fighting...it was pretty standard disaster movie fair when monsters werent present but when they were around was some very good fun

Okay, I'll admit to being very wary of this movie right off the bat (I actually compared Cranston's inclusion in this one to Aaron Paul's inclusion in Need for Speed in terms of how much of a perceived waste for their considerable acting talents I thought it was), but the rave reviews and its record breaking performance have me rethinking my stance...
So, without any spoilers, obviously, can you all, regular moviegoers, tell me exactly how good (or not) this movie is?

You're going to get divisive answers. The only thing you can do is see the movie and decide for itself whether it was worth seeing.

Agreed on all fronts ^ but it goes two ways, those who push and find explanations to thinly written plots and vice versa.

Ultimately, a movie can be as dumb as a sack of bricks for all I care as long as it's fun and I didn't have fun. I think this is partly due to the script taking the human storyline too seriously. When you set that tone, you can't help but dissect things here and there that don't make lick of sense.
It doesn't help that the emotional moments of the movie begin and end with Bryan Cranstons character, with everybody else being just about as effective at driving the drama as cardboard cut outs with word bubbles. If they had treated the other characters as seriously as they did his, I don't think so many would find it such an issue.

I'm kinda shocked you're seriously trying to defend that statement

If you want to argue you didnt like the pacing and felt it was poorly done, fine. Opinions are opinions and you have every right to yours. But once you to try objectively arguing "WORST EVER" territory, it's silly by default.

There aren't that many summer blockbusters since they became a thing around the Jaws era to take into account when you break it down, and I've seen most of them. I'm qualified to make such a statement, and I stand by it. The pacing is some of the worst, if not the worst, I've ever seen.

Meanwhile...

yea but how many pots did u smoke b4 hand? B honest.

You're saying the only way someone wouldn't remember the VERY generic and forgettable character's names is if they're on drugs.

Come on...

Solid 8/10 action movie with better build up and suspense than most summer blockbusters. Don't expect it to be any smarter though.

But opinions! See it for yourself and decide I'd say!

Watched it today. Slow paced and dull. I did enjoy the small bits and pieces with Godzilla, but they were few and far between. There was too much focus on the characters, despite them being shallow as all hell. Oh well, I guess there's only so much you can to with the source material.

Great movie. Glad I watched it in IMAX.

Will probably buy on bluray if I find it on sale

I'm not even waiting for it to go on sale. I've got my problems with the movie, but this is was absolutely a blast to watch. I've got a projector in my basement and I'd love to throw this up on the screen downstairs.

That dude should thank whoever invented the helicopter, he was saved by them at least 4 times.
I think he was only removed for his safety twice. Although yeah, a couple times I think he probably should have been in an Osprey, but I'm sure those are much more expensive to get on set.

Just got back from seeing the film. My friends didn't like it.... but I thought it was worth seeing at least....
Geeze, very dissappointing film though.
Teasing Cranston as the star,
when he's only in it for 30 minutes
. And all the big fights early on being relayed by tvs that the actors are watching, instead of showing them straight...
When I heard the complaints of them not showing Godzilla enough, I imagined it was just people not 'getting' the good old Jaws style reveal system... but they actually show him a lot. Only you're ussually watching him in the background on a tv screen while actors talk military tactics..This film really really skimped on the budget.
But it comes together in the last minutes at least, they start finally spending the budget and there is some incredible visual work.
All in all... well behind Pacific Rim in quality.

I find the film is a bit of a mixture of silly and serious and is only interpreted by the viewer. I mean, this guy finds himself inches away from death every time he sets outs and the movie is relentless with ironic one liners like "it ain't the end of the world", "I better not miss my ride, kid", etc. Hell, even the placement of things like "Stay clear of the automatic doors" as civilians plummet off a destroyed train and "He's going under!" as Ford loses consciousness before going under when referencing one of the monsters heading out to sea. It was all very subtle and unorthodox which I appreciate. Nothing was hand fed to us (other than the obvious money shots).

I thought it was good, but not great. Some people love it, some are like me and only like it but we have our problems with it too, while others outright hate it. It seems to be a very divisive movie.

The question you have to ask yourself is this: Are you a Godzilla fan? Meaning, have you watched and enjoyed the older classic Godzilla movies? If yes, then you will most likely be able to at least enjoy parts of the new movie, and then it's worth seeing on the big screen. I loved about 1/4 of the movie, passably liked about half of it, and borderline hated the other 1/4 of it. But I'm glad I saw it.

I was making a joke based on his avatar (James Franco in pineapple express=pot smoker, just so we are clear). Relax, friend

If you want to say it has THE WORST PACING YOUVE EVER SEEN in a summer blockbuster, go ahead. I call that hyperbolic. There really isn't much of a conversation there other than to say I disagree

As divisive as this movie seems to be on gaf can we all agree on one thing at least:
the way Godzilla's spikes lit up from tail to head along with that power charging sound just before his first atomic fire shot was fuckin' awesome!
Yes? No? Definitely Yes?!

It is a definitive yes i do in fact speak on behalf of GAF when it comes to such things. Good day.

Everything about Godzilla was fucking awesome. The first time the camera pans up to him and you see him in all his glory was fucking awesome.
And then it cuts away, because who wants to see him fighting another monster?

I think it was because the tanks were rolling down to get in formation to defend the bridge. After they go by and drive towards the edge, then it's clear. Of course all this did was piss Godzilla off and destroy the bridge.

Absolutely!
The moment I saw those spikes glow, I knew something like that was gonna happen. I had to contain my excitement when it did.

Definitely. The movie has it's moments for sure...
I'd also add both Muto kills and the red smoke halo jumps
.... I just wish the movie had more of that.

Good. I was worried we as movie-goers had gotten to the point where we couldn't even enjoy an awesome moment like that without questioning it or calling it a cliche or fan service or something.

Thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Beautiful, suspenseful, well acted (aside from some scenes with Aaron Taylor), and well paced. Not too much Godzilla and monster fighting, and enough of the human side to make it all come together and feel emotionally resonant. Each scene felt necessary and entertaining. Even the end battle felt quite realistic, there was actually a struggle, and Godzilla wasn't some near invincible beast making for a dull battle.

Only negative really is how predictable it all was. Que school bus scenes, train scene with child etc, important character (wife, son, brother, sister, girlfriend, boyfriend etc) being stuck in the evacuation or danger zone and so on. But other than that, as well as some rather too convenient plot developments, at least it was a well shot and filmed take on tried and tested genre tropes.

I'd give it an 8.0-8.5/10. Honestly better than I expected it to be and absolutely worth a cinema viewing.

Saw Godzilla today. It was the biggest cock tease in the world, constantly cutting away right when cool shit is about to happen. It blue balls you over and over, more and more, until Act 3. It finally gears up to give you what you've been waiting 2 hours for. Unfortunately, Act 3 was mediocre at best, not even coming close to redeeming the previous 2 boring ass hours.

I got back from the movie, as a long time Godzilla fan I really enjoyed it. It definitely did way more justice to the Godzilla franchise then the previous American Godzilla film and I hope we see some sequels.

The biggest issue was that I wish we had seen more of the Godzilla/Muto fight in Hawaii then just the very beginning a few brief scenes on TV.

Perhaps the cutaway is a nod to the children of yesterday sitting down in front of the TV watching their own godzilla.

(Finally have a keyboard to type on)

The thing is, this really a isn't a bad movie. When taken in the context of the 20something Godzilla movies I'm quite certain it's among the very top. All the ones I've seen have weak human acting and downright nonsensical plots.

When taken as a movie in and of its own right it's got some glaring flaws. There are also plot holes and jumps that somewhat broke my suspense of disbelief. All in all it's an enjoyable big dumb summer movie that isn't terrible.

Just came back from watching this. Loved every bit. Intense from start to finish. The soundtrack was especially good, oh my god.

to be fair, you basically see the extent of the Hawaii "fight". Their wasn't some grand battle royale we missed out on.

Notice that
the MUTO don't really go on the offensive after Godzilla until after they finally meet up with each other. The eggs are laid shortly thereafter. They were behaving territorially and protecting their young.
Animals don't typically fight to the death just because.

Lol nice.

I saw it the other day with my girlfriend. She seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. I liked all the Godzilla parts. He's an interesting guy. He's very big and strong. I didn't like any of the human stuff, not even Bryan Cranston who I thought was really overselling the drama. I mean we've known him for 15 minutes and he's going Full Measure style in that holding room. I respect his ability but I think the acting was too good for the movie, didn't fit. Everything else with the humans was junk.

But the
atomic breath
pretty much sealed the deal and I left feeling pretty happy. Knew what I wanted from the movie going in, and got it, even if I also got a lot of other stuff I didn't want.

Not sure how he gains redemption, more like vindication by being proven right about his theory all this time. But if you liked it that's great, I just empathized with his character and felt the film would've been better if he remained in it.

Agreed

And his son should have died. Man what a shitty actor and shitty character Ford Jr was...

... Jesus, are you serious?

It's hard to explain. CGI was obviously the right choice as it's impossible to make the monsters seems like actual creatures without them, but CGI still isn't at a place where I feel like I'm looking at something that occupies a physical space and I always sort of tune out a little bit after copious CGI destruction because the lack of physicality and substance just doesn't feel as threading or impactful as it should. Even though they were obviously models in the original, I always could tell that they were really crumbling and getting knocked over, and exploding.

Also, I hate to bring up the comparison but to my memory Pacific Rim had better CGI and things felt like they had a lot more weight to them, and looked slightly less noticeable as computer constructs.

The MUTO's looked more real than Godzilla, but I think that's because they are a lot less detailed and more metallic than a living organism that shows emotion like Godzilla does.

CGI was the least of my complaints though, and I'm not saying it should have been better or they should have used goofy rubber suits again. I just wish CGI in general was better.

It still would of been nice to see it up close rather then on a TV screen though, especially considering all the build up.

No idea how you guys loved this movie.

I thought it was extremely disappointing, and that is coming from someone going in with no expectations and not being a Godzilla fan.

For the first hour and a half, I was bored to tears.

It was talking, and talking, and talking, THEN GODZILLA IS ABOUT TO DO SOMETHING COOL, ohh wait, nevermind, more talking and talking, Godzilla going to fight.....ohh, no nevermind. Lets talk some more.

Finally at the end you get some action. What a disappointment. 2 hours could have easily been shaved down to an hour and a half.

Thank God I didn't see it in imax. What an absolute waste of money that would have been.

yeah come to think of it
bryan cranston would've made for a much better main character and if the son had died and even then he could somehow see that godzilla didn't necessarily intend to harm people but actually they should allow him to do his thing it could have been a powerful climax there. but he's like 60 and doesn't have big baby eyes.

was amazing.

I dunno though, I like Bryan Cranston because at least someone was willing to go all Full Measure and show some emotion. Everyone else was utterly lifeless (except Olsen, but her performance was wasted on a character so pointless I'm not even sure why they bothered giving her lines).

When Cranston was on screen I actually felt an emotional response, and something else far more important. I realized after the movie was over that that something else was 'entertained', which all the other human characters failed to elicit in me.

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
While I can understand humans should see kaijuus due to largeness (although I still think the female MUTO could bury underground), kaijuu can sneak up against kaijuu since they all seem to be, roughly within each other's... "range of mass" so to say. Like how ants could recognize our approach, but fellow humans can sneak past each other.

Cranstons character had no purpose after
he gave the scientists the echolocation idea.
What would you have him do the rest of the movie exactly?
