I played to halfway through chapter 2. I might play Witcher 2 if I ever figure out how to get AA working.

Downloading TW1 now and installing. CDPR put an insane amount of value into their product, it deserves to be played asap! (After I finish playing Deus EX HR)

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition is now Steamplay. So anyone who bought the Steam version for the PC now has the mac version for free as well.

Also, free The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings back-up copy on GOG.com if you bought the game elsewhere.

Sweet. I was wishing I had gotten the GOG version over the Steam version. These guys are great.

I wonder if we'll be able to get those "back-up" copies even if we buy the game later, after the enhanced edition gets released...

Premium Editions: Assassins Creed: Director's Cut, and Heroes of Might & Magic V Bundle too. $19.99 each. One week deal, buy both for $19.99.

HURRY UP WITH THE GOOD STUFF.

Sweet. Looks like I made the right decision choosing Fallout 2 around Christmas. ^_^

Edit: I should have nabbed Wing Commander IV before this giveaway was announced. >_<

Free Fallout should probably have its own topic, shouldn't it? I mean, new releases and x%-off sales on GOG are one thing, but this is a major franchise for this generation getting its ancestor released for free for 48 hours...

Better to just edit this thread's title. It's been on sale constantly and was given away other times as well for various promotions, so I have a feeling most interested gamers already have it.

EDIT: Well, maybe I overestimate how many people have the game.

I think it is worth a new thread. Certainly would grab more attention if it was emphasized a bit more than just a perfunctory thread title edit.

Heroes of Might and Magic V is really good if you enjoy the core aspects of the heroes games and don't mind the cheesy campaign. The battles are the best they have ever been (thanks to the larger grids and accessible display of the turn list), and the towns all look great and are fun to build up along with the heroes themselves. I thoroughly enjoyed HoM&M V
the second time I played it, like everyone else I dismissed as crap it initially
. Quite a lot of gameplay between the game and the two expansion's campaigns as well. The second expansion offers branching unit upgrades and brings the number of types of recruitable creatures to among the highest it's ever been in any Heroes game.

AC1 for $19.99? Disappointing price, but absolutely mind-shattering that they're offering DRM-free Ubisoft downloads. That's thread-worthy in itself.

Not with their current selection of DRM free Ubisoft games, it isn't. Wake me up when they get DRM free versions of Ubsioft games that had the required internet connection DRM (Uplay). AC1 had no DRM on Steam other than being on Steam and it apparently had zero DRM on D2D as well.

HOMM5 with no copy protection? Might have to consider that. I still play HOMM3 from time to time. It's still great fun (especially hot-seat multiplayer). I haven't considered a HOMM game in years since Ubisoft dumps all sorts of crappy DRM on their titles.

Now Wing Commander IV decided to stop downloading at 6.25GB of 6.41GB. >_<

Edit: Okay, played it a bit. This game is serious business! Not only because of the completely unintuitive menus, but because of all the crazy features, it's an absolute must to read the stuff they give you. I thought it might be similar to Descent, but there are no control customizations and nothing that even tells you how to use all the functions of your ship. That said, it has a lot of functions! This will take some practice but it will be really cool.

Everything runs flawlessly with a widescreen monitor and you can use a 360 controller no problem. You'll still have to keep the keyboard around for a lot of functions, but it's definitely much better using a controller than messing with the one and only KB/M setup they give you.

Buying a new game, coming home and reading the manual on the toilet. Good times. :lol

Fuck yeah. It was almost like an entire ceremonial happening. Going to a retail store, getting the big box, looking at the box/reading the manual on the ride home and while installing the game. Good times, indeed.

Same process for me as well. Box -> admire cover art -> read back of box -> manual.

I still haven't played Witcher 1 :(

Me neither. I can never make up my mind if I want to play it in my bedroom (Big beefy PC, but playing at a desk) or in the lounge (Weaker - but no slouch - laptop, but big TV and COMFY COUCH!)

I know I could take Big Beefy PC downstairs, but I don't particularly want to!

The game is pretty demanding due to poor optimization, but at times can look really nice... I'd play it on the stronger PC, unless of course you're satisfied with the performance of the laptop. The opening scene with the monster coming through the gates controlled by the mage (it's been a while!) is among the lowest the framerate typically gets, so it's a good gauge for performance. Also, my usual advice, 16:9 resolution (engine issue in 16:10, blocky) and OTS camera (wasd + mouse) for soaking in the most of the atmosphere... it really is much more personal this way, since it's in no way a tactical RPG which benefits from the isometric view.

Copy and pasted from the Old School Dungeon Crawler thread since it applies here as well:

If you don't own the games and like First Person Rpgs (and strategy rpgs) with lots of loot you should be taking advantage of the GOG.com Might and Magic Sale!

Games On sale:

+++ - Highly recommended
++ - Recommended (but start with the highly recommended titles)
+ - Not recommended

Might and Magic 6-Pack (+++) $4.99 - Might and Magic IV-VI are all awesome, even if IV and V are nearly 20 years old. This pack gives you 100s of hours of gameplay, and the best entries in the Might and Magic series for $5.

Might and Magic VII (++) $2.99 - I really liked this installment. It built off of the mechanics of MM6, and offered a more robust magic and skill system. You also get your own castle. It has my recommendation.

Might and Magic VIII (++) $2.99 - If you like the idea of having a party that consists of a Knight, a Vampire, a Troll, a Dragon, and a Minotaur, you would enjoy this game. The scenario was interesting, and the game contained most of the things I loved about the series. I did find it on the easy side though.

Might and Magic IX (+) $2.99 - I have never actually beat this game, but it is a big step down from the previous 5 installments.

Heroes of Might and Magic (+) $4.99 - Not a bad game by any means, but for $5 you are better off choosing the improved sequels.

Heroes of Might and Magic 2 (++) $4.99 - Improved upon almost everything in the first game. If I remember correctly, the story was set in the same world as Might and Magic VI, and the games share some of the same NPCs and Lore.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (+++) $4.99 - This is the best game in the series. It improves upon HoMM in most ways and has a TON of content. You get the lengthy base game and the x-pack scenarios. HOMM3 ties into the story presented in Might and Magic VI and is a story prequel of sorts to Might and Magic VII. However, Story is a secondary focus in all of these titles, so you don't need to play them in order.

Heroes of Might and Magic 4 (++) $4.99 - They tried to chance up the HOMM formula a little, to mixed results. The game was originally considered a disappointment after HOMM3, but I still like it. Battles are slower however. Like HOMM3, you get all the x-packs, giving you a ton of content to play through.

Heroes of Might and Magic Chronicles (++) $4.99 - This game was originally released in episodic format. Each chapter gave you a campaign starring a different hero. The campaigns were based on the HOMM3 engine, so if you like that game, you would probably like these. Campaigns are shorter and easier than the campaigns present in other HOMM titles. However, you get 8 of them in this game, so there is still a ton of content.

Crusaders of Might and Magic (+) $2.99 - An action game/dungeon crawler spin-off that isn't worth your time, even at $3. The level design was poor and the game itself boring.

Ah ok, I was wondering about this then. I was playing the intro on high, and everything felt pretty good, fps around 40, and then that monster scene happens, and it took a giant nosedive to near slideshow status.

Turn the draw distance down a little bit. You see 10-20 fps increase alone in chapter 1. That intro area crawls like crazy, so don't worry about it too much.

I don't know, the description in kswiston's post of 8 is pretty enticing. :lol

Unlike all the past Might and Magic games you only make 1 character. The rest you have to find and recruit. It's also by far the easiest of the series, having dragons in your party completely breaks the game.

I don't think there's any part of the implied "crush all your enemies with DRAGONS" that I don't like.

Has anyone played Wing Commander 3 and/or 4 on modern Win 7 machine? How does it do? Are there any fan made mods that increase res or textures etc?
