GOG | News and Updates 2017 - Back to the basics

Two things I wish from GOG:

1) Be less stingy on what they accept. Let the users be the ones to decide which games are worth buying.

2) Follow Steam's lead and let us remove games from out account. I know we can hide games in our library, but for me I don't need Eador Genesis in my library when I have Eador: Masters of the Broken World or Strike Suit Zero when I have the Director's cut version as well.

You can contact support to remove a game from your account. I did this a long time ago so I don't know if you can still do this.

So the sale is almost over. I'm just wondering how the mystery games have treated y'all?

Personally, I'm afraid to buy them because the odds of me getting a dupe I already own on Steam are pretty high. The site mentions that more were added, but I dunno.

Buy them as a 'gift' then. You can trade it on GAF if you already have it.

The gifting thing is a clever idea, huh. Never even considered that.
Saw it once before it was buried over in Gaming, but Giants: Citizen Kabuto is free on GOG for the next 40 hours.
Oh, good point.

Protip: scroll down to the bottom of the main page to claim it. The very bottom.

It was clever putting it at the bottom like that. A couple Reddit threads I happened to see about it had a good number of comments that went something like: "When I was scrolling down I saw 'X game' from my childhood and just had to buy it!"

Man... that's fucking weird. Giants: Citizen Kabuto is a game that I really wanted back when I was in 7th grade, but I knew my computer couldn't run it. I remember seeing it getting advertised to fucking death in PC Gamer, it had some great reviews; but to this day, I've never played it.

To see it just sitting there, for free, is a bizarre feeling.

I picked up the wing commander pack! I was thinking of divinity sin, but I do not want to buy games before Christmas. Why are sales now? Bah

There is a free worms game available for the next two days. Worms : Forts Under Siege

Hatoful Boyfriend : Holiday Star is also being released tomorrow.

Nice, the Hatoful Boyfriend : Holiday Star collectors edition is available on GOG. They didn't have the CE for the first game.

It's cool that they're giving away free games so regularly... but honestly, I'll pay for a game, too, if they maybe consider getting more good ones.

It really has slowed to a trickle compared to earlier in the year. Certainly doesn't help that they keep rejecting perfectly good games. I'm just hoping they're waiting until the holiday rush of sales is over (not that GOG hasn't had enough sales lately...) to introduce a new wave of games.

Yeah, would be nice.

But honestly, at this point, it's not just that they're rejecting great games. It's that they just aren't getting much of anything interesting. Still no Capcom, Sega, Bamco, Konami, etc. And when they do get a big studio, they fail to get any of the newer or more interesting games (ie: Bethesda and WB.) I dunno if it's a lack of aggressiveness on their BD people's part or if literally every interesting publisher is holding out, but the effect is the same. GOG's just gotten boring..

I don't care if a game is a literal sack of shit. If I think it looks like shit and isn't worth buying, that's my decision to make. Go ahead and curate the games you promote, but artificially limiting what a customer can buy when you have unlimited store space is stupid.

Well, a lot of folks disliked it when steam "opened the floodgates". I guess that GOG is going for an "every game we sell is worth it (in our opinion?)" approach

People didn't like when Steam opened the floodgates because they gave every game that came out a fair chance in terms of visibility. If you curated it so that the absolute crap never hit any of the lists on the front page, but was still searchable, I doubt anyone would be complaining.

But no. GOG wants to take the approach of no games yesterday, and two generic strategy releases today. Shocker. Probably a managerial sim tomorrow.

I agree with this.

Keep GOG pure. Ain't nobody got time for never-to-be-finished, amateur, or, or straight up broken games.

Steam will always be there for those desiring access to an unfiltered torrent of garbage.

So I guess they're ending the year with a whimper.

I still like GOG for being DRM-free, but they really shit the bed in the second half of this year. Not letting good games in that the developers tried to submit, not getting any newer games from basically any bigger publishers, still no major Japanese publishers on-board. Some of it's their fault, some of it isn't, but the effect is the same: they've turned into a really uninteresting platform.

It's even more annoying considering all the stuff going on with Steam and that security incident (and delayed response). I like DRM-free games, but I would like it even better if there was more competition to Steam. Of all the groups out there (mainly EA/Origin, Ubisoft/Uplay, and I guess Humble Bundle if that counts), GOG is pretty much the one I'm rooting for.. They aren't going to do anything by being so strict on what they allow on...

Seriously. The table's kinda set for them to be an increasingly viable alternative, and their response is "NO, FUCK THAT. Here's some generically-titled Euro strategy game."

It seems to be a video podcast, not an audio one (there's talk about showing trailers and, if it runs shorter than their 2 hour slot, filling in time with let's plays). Although they're also looking into releasing the audio independently, and they may well have an RSS feed for that:

The plan is to also get the audio out in podcast locations like iTunes - so a regular podcast format is also in the plans! :)

I can see where GOG is coming from with the curated content but at the same they need to make the store more attractive to developers. Their strict approval process will continue affect independant releases if devs decide to look elsewhere for release. One of GAF's own devs had his critically well reviewed game Cook, Serve, Delicious rejected for looking like a mobile game, which is ironic considering the presence of Hatoful Boyfriend and other, even poorly reviewed, games in the store.

Having a DRM-free store and client with Steam-like auto-updates is great except when you realize new games aren't being launched there alongside Stream at release. I'd love to buy everything on my indie wishlist on GOG (Aviary Attorney, Concrete Jungle, Deadbolt, etc) but it doesn't look like it's happening any time soon.

Is there a list of all of the known games that have been rejected by GOG?

I don't think there's a definitive list, but this thread from the GOG forums is the best list I've seen. The thread also contains some games that didn't make it to the last draft of the list (namely Mushihimesama. Can't believe GOG turned it down).

I'm surprised they turned down Braid and Thomas Was Alone.
In addition to that list, I'm still disappointed they don't have Assault Android Cactus; from the OT:

No gog because they never returned my submission from way back when but we are on humble via widget on our site and the humble store, comes with a DRM free build and steam key (Steam version is also DRM free though heh).

And also Fall of the Dungeon Guardians:
Except that, I got the answer from GOG : they said it looked like a good & interesting game, but were afraid it was too much of a niche game for their store (translation : it didn’t sell enough on Steam)

So they turned down Braid and apparently don't seem to be very interested in The Witness according to Jonathan Blow. Weird.

and now they apparently did send a contract but he feels like they are wasting his time with bad contract terms that will require him to argue about them and now doesn't want to deal with GOG.

Braid and Thomas Was Alone are both absolutely brilliant. Strange that GOG has stricter requirements than Microsoft and Sony when it comes to their store.

In some good news from the Galaxy beta thread that I don't think had ever been confirmed:

http://www.gog.com/forum/general/gog_galaxy_beta_2/post3313

"BKGaming: I assume this means that eventually developers will be able to push out updates themselves to Galaxy users?

We will be rolling this out to selected developers in the first phases, but in general, yes, that's the idea. The more automated the whole process is, the more timely release we can have, and of course for new games getting updates on time is key."

This is something that has needed to be done for some time and is a good sign that GOG is finally willing to let go of the reins a bit.

Bloodrayne Betrayal is coming out soon for anyone who wanted that game DRM free.

http://www.gog.com/game/bloodrayne_betrayal

A Boy And His Blob as well, later this month.

http://www.gog.com/game/a_boy_and_his_blob

Okay, now that is something I'm all about. Bloodrayne Betrayal is a surprisingly good game. Great music, too. Not sure how the PC port turned out, but I'm glad it's getting a DRM-free release.

A Boy and His Blob is also great... same deal there. If the port's good, I'll buy it.
