Going to London

4) Nobody lives in Zone 1. Except for the rich and a few old community's here & there. My kids & their mother live in Zone 1. Nine generations of her family come from there.

I lived in Zone 1....And I was a bartender, I was scraping by at the time, but it's totally possible to flatshare in central London. I got no help from my folks either (poor family boo).

Oh you have to pay extra for storage? I thought every bed had a locker beneath it and I could just bring my own padlock or something. Would be nice to have some kind people to talk to there though.

Also thanks for the info about the night buses! Don't know how big of a deal that'll be, but it's good to know just in case!

There is storage there that requires your own padlock but the really strong metal lockers (if you wanted to store away an expensive laptop or travel documents) require you to pay for their use.

Oh I see, remember how much it was? I'll be traveling quite light as well, mostly clothes, phone + tablet and camera, so hopefully the regular storage will suffice.

Tayyabs near green Whitechapel is some of the best Pakistani food you'll ever taste. Soutjall and green Street are nice for a visit. The Stratford Westfield is cool as shit

Yes, this place is pretty decent. It's super trendy so gets stupidly busy in the evening. DO NOT get a curry on Brick Lane. Load of a crap. However, do get a Salt Beef Bagel on Brick Lane and pop into an Ambala (Indian sweets) :-). There's an interesting Szechuan place in the East End called Gourmet San if you're feeling super brave, but also Empress of Szechaun in Chinatown is nice as well.

I'd advise you to not listen to the person who suggested Nando's.

As for food, I can heartily recommend Marco Polo. It's near the Thames, great food, friendly service. And I can also recommend the local Hard Rock Cafe.

I stayed there a few years ago so I can't really remember. However the locker situation may change depending on the size of the room you're staying in and how much you're paying.

The one I was in was the cheapest available so I ended up with a tiny wooden locker that I didn't feel comfortable using, but you may end up with something better.

Ohhhhhh Bagel fight! Which one do you go to? the one with the red counter or the one with the white two or three doors down.

Avoid:

EAT
Nando's
Garfunkels
Giraffe
Aberdeen Angus Steak House
Pizza Express
Zizzi/Prezzo
Yo Sushi
Leon
South of the river
Boris bikes
Eye contact

these ones are fine, do you have something against chain brands? :P
They aren't places I often go to, but alright on the off occasion.

The rest either suck (Yo Sushi, Giraffe, Leon) or I haven't been to them, so I wouldn't know.

It's touristy, but a tour of the Tower of London led by a Yeoman was remarkably good.

And go to the British Museum.

And the National Gallery.

Also London had the McDonals with the most attractive staff I've ever seen. Must be a benefit of having Eastern European immigrants flooding the city.

Let's clear up a few things.

Any other questions just ask.

Hey I'm in zone 1. As a student....

Islington/Angel area are a cool place to eat out as well.

I don't know London well but I recommend you check out TripAdvisor.

Always find it interesting to read the excellent reviews AND the poor reviews to strike up a balanced perspective (that and some of the poor reviews for really high end places are rather funny).

What about Five Guys?

Five Guys is amazing. It's an American chain. I went there in LA, amazing burgers & fries. So glad they opened one in Covent Garden. It's a little pricey, but totally worth it for a one-off occasion.

Yeah Angel is very nice, loads of cool lounge bars & a really nice Japanese restaurant there. I used to go to the o2 Islington academy all the time for gigs.

Can you remember the name of the Japanese restaurant? Might visit it this weekend.

All the conveyor belt sushi restaurants are pretty crap. As for decent chain restaurants, Busaba is always reliable for great, well priced thai food.

Five Guys was okay. The burger was really good, and i liked the awesome drinks selection. However the fries were really bland and stupidly overpriced. I would recommend just a burger and drink from there.

Byron is pretty decent, but again i find it is way overpriced for what you get. As far as the 'trendy burger' places go, my fave is probably Kua'iAna on Carnaby Street. I've been recommended a place called Meat Liquor but haven't had the chance to go yet, been told its grand though.

Yeh, kinda. In a lot of towns you won't have a choice outside of chains and local indian or chinese restaurants, but in London you can afford to avoid their safeness for something you'll love or hate.

I thought Five Guys was way expensive for what you got, but at least salad toppings are free. Still to try Shake Shack in Covent Garden.

Heading to London for 4 days this month, and know VERY little about British History.

Can anyone recommend some podcasts/books that would hit some of the main points so I have some frame of reference?

Oof. There's a lot of it :P

I'll let someone else help you there, never really think about how best to learn the history of a place you're not ingratiated in

There's quite a few on Amazon UK, not sure if they're available wherever you're coming from though

Oh, I realize it's a LOT! Not there for very long, and will only be hitting a few places.

Also London-GAF, that walktie talkie building is ruining your skyline.

And melting your pavements apparently.

London's Skyline has been fucked for years now. Can't wait for the other 2-3 stupid looking skyscrappers to be finished.

London is the only city where I've been harassed by a stranger. Some angry lad had spent a bit too much time at the local pub and had to release some working class-frustration.

Plus there are a lot of long-bearded creepy homeless guys around there. Not Mulholland Drive-level scary but still.

And I've been in 'Nam.

What's the consensus about Byron Burgers?
It's decent, but pretty damn expensive.

For value and quality Honest Burgers is vastly superior in my opinion.

Patty & Bun is great too.

How important is a sim card for 3 days?

Ideally, I'd love to have one in Ireland too, where we will be for a week after.. but I'm assuming I'd have to get 2 separate cards.

Depends, how likely are you going to be using data/calls on your phone?

Three let you roam in Ireland for free with a UK SIM but not too sure how it works on PAYG. Seems you have to convert your credit somehow.

Just use wifi spots? Its not like you need to be plugged in on your phone all the time. I never really understood getting a SIM when wifi is almost everywhere these days.

Just save an offline map in Google Maps for the area you'll be in, GPS/location will still work in airplane mode w/ wifi on. You'll be able to find a decent number of wifi hotspots, but less than you would find in large cities in the U.S.
