GoldenEye Online Multiplayer is not coming to Xbox. (Split-screen co-op available)

This isn't coming to ps? Wow. I'll definitely play this on Xbox

So, this is where the Halo Infinite couch co-op resources went...

I hope the current generation can appreciate this game, but I am sure it will be picked to pieces. Definitely a game ahead of its time in 1997 for Consoles and one of the biggest flukes of all time. The documentaries on this game are amazing to watch. The N64 Switch version is probably going to kill my positive memories for it :)

The downside is Nintendo online. It's crazy in 2022, basic features like messaging a buddy on switch online does not exists. Too bad Nintendo is ass backwards when it comes to online.

So this is the N64 version with some minor work done. The switch has online play like every other NSO game where it creates a virtual controller and the game thinks it's running in split screen. Sadly there won't be any real online multiplayer.
The XBLA 360 version that was cancelled had updated textures, resolution and real online play just like the Perfect Dark XBLA 360 game.
Still better than nothing

Wait. How exactly is that not real online multiplayer?

the emulator creates a connection between 2 consoles and makes the game think the different consoles are controllers connected to the N64.

it then syncs both consoles up to have the game state consistent between both consoles.
this introduces input lag and if you live too far apart from each other it can be downright unplayable.

so you play splitscreen and player 2, 3 and 4 will have input lag

any ping above like 70ms or 80ms will be terrible.

this functionality is also available in many emulators, including Retroarch on Xbox SX/One
so technically you could simply play GoldenEye this way on an Xbox today if you wanted.

I want every one of you to be honest with me, were you really going to play GoldenEye MP online? I'll likely give the single player a spin for old time's sake, mabey invite some buddies over to play a few rounds on a a big-ass flat screen, and call it a day.

I want to see the percentage of people specifically playing Halo 1 MP in MCC, a much better FPS experience, but still an old enough game to drink.

why would you play GoldenEye online when Perfect Dark exists... that's the real question here.

Perfect Dark is 4K 60fps, has 8p online MP, with support for mixed splitscreen+online with up to 4p splitscreen.
and you can play as Peter Molyneux...
it has weapon settings that use GoldenEye weapons, it has the best GoldenEye maps... like... yeah...

Wait, are you saying I can play my Switch N64 games online?

How do I do this?

So Nintendo's shitty petty nature kept us from getting the game before, and now that we're finally getting it, their shitty petty nature ruins it now.

I'll play it on Gamepass and when it lapses go back to the N64 version...what a buzzkill Nintendo.

I bet there's a tutorial on YouTube, I only ever tried that once with NES games when I tried the trial version of Nintendo Online and that was ages ago... so not entirely sure how you do it exactly.

I think you have to start something on that sidebar you can bring up in the emulator.

What do Nintendo get out of this though, stopping online MP on Xbox?. Do they think Xbox gamers are going to jump ship to Switch to play Goldeneye multiplayer?, lol.

Most likely, N did not want MS to have the definitive version of the game, knowing they had the stronger console, and online service that would only serve to embarrass Nintendo side by side in the same game.

It would not be so bad, if Nintendo at least let you buy it, and not rent it through their NSO sub...I was excited as hell at first but meh...I guess I thank MS for putting up with Nintendo's BS long enough for me to run through the game again on Series X lol.

for the love of your made up gods, please stop speculating why only the Switch version has online play... HOW OUT OF THEN LOOP ARE YOU PEOPLE??? HOLY FUCK....

So disappointing to find out that this isn't the 360 XBLA re-master that is already pretty much 90% complete. Oh well. I guess I will continue to play that version on my 360. Fuck Nintendo and Microsoft for this half assed shit.

So in reality online wasn't really added to the Switch version. It's just the way NSO games have always handled it via the emulator hack.

why is he saying that it's confusing? I'm really losing faith in the intelligence of some people by the day.

in the Nintendo presentation it was made very clear that the game is an N64 emulation.

in Rare's tweet they clearly said the Xbox version was recreated for Xbox One/SX... it's clearly a port and not emulated.

how is that hard to understand? you have to purposefully misunderstand what is said or be completely oblivious to the industry to not understand what's happening tbh.

yeah perfect dark is better than goldeneye* the 360 release is one of the best game ever
*except on nintendo 64 where perfect dark is so blurry and runs so poorly golden eye is better because it runs.... well enough

yeah... that game should have been moved over to the GameCube tbh. it was way too ambitious for the poor old N64

One thing that confuses me is why Nintendo is marketing Goldeneye with online play and they never did for any of the other N64 titles.

Actually, I just found out in this thread that you can play the other N64 Switch games online (which I still don't know how to do).

they actually always at least said "supports online play" or something similar when a game releases that support it... pretty sure I heard them say that multiple times in such presentations.

and here a Nintendo direct clip when it was first announced

also they did often mention it before that too when you were able to play SNES and NES games online

For all the "We know you've been waiting this one" there obviously isn't enough market interest for them build up the multiplayer from scratch for true online. If there was they would've done it.

No xbox online? That sucks. I don't think you could play the original game online either but I think people were expecting that as a modern day feature.

Bold prediction: the multiplayer will have aged terribly and noone will actually play it more then once. I will probably do the campaign again for old times sake.

Yes, I remember that Halo thread where split-screen multiplayer seemed to be the most important feature of all time and online multiplayer didn't matter at all. Now it seems to be vice versa, for some reason (we all know why).

Difference series different fans and different series have different play styles? Some people wanting both local co-op and online multiplayer?

Sorry, do not mind me… you can go back circling the wagons around 343i ;).

Is this game going to get its own separate download option like Banjo K&T, PD, Viva Piñata, Nuts n Bolts etc or will it be locked inside Rare Replay like Conker's Bad Fur Day?

What other Rare game has Microsoft released on the PS since buying them 20 years ago?
Imagine that it's still shocking for people that Microsoft are making exclusive games.

The comments will repeat in shock as well when tes 6,fallout 5 and CoD will be exclusives.

Love, laugh and cry for the first week of sale and forget all about it. Just like almost every other retro remaster/release title.

Hope no Xbox fans are going to complain about Nintendo setting stipulations for a game they originally published. After all, I've spent the last week reading the gleeful commentary about MS being able to tell Sony to fuck off once they acquire Activision.
The dumbest thing ive read.

Tell me you are a salty fanboy without telling me you are a salty fanboy

I can not believe that both Nintendo and Microsoft screwed this up so badly!

Nintendo gets some outdated ROM dump with online and outdated controls. Will be popular for less than a "hot minute". Especially when it running at 10fps.

Microsoft gets the updated version but it is not the alleged 2008 version? Just a cleaned up version of the ROM? No online. You got better frame rates and modern control scheme. But WTH?

I am starting to believe the outcry on this will be large and possibly upset both consumer bases.

Damn MS & Nintendo. What a s*%# show both of these companies are lately.

How about… Since there was no COD in 2023.

Just have a digital and physical version of 2008 with upgrades on ALL systems and crossplay and see how that sells.

Give Nintendo a cut.

Easy 15+ million seller with pc and PlayStation included.

Unbelievable the opportunities that lay before them with certain titles and they can't get out of their own way. Truly remarkable.

I'm actually laughing at this…what a disaster.

Online Goldeneye is something I doubt I'd give more then five minutes of my time to at best.
Revisiting the campaign is all that really matters, and even that will be a one and done experience.

I think you're missing the point lol, this is purely a nostalgia thing.

The 2008 game was generally not received well because it trampled on peoples goldeneye nostalgia with its recreation of the dam level.

If they put that one out again, it'll be nothing but bad PR.

Wait so golden eye n64 version is coming to switch online and the updated version is on game pass or is the updated version going to both? Find this vrry confusing

Switch is getting a straight N64 rom dump via its N64 emulation thing.

Xbox is getting what looks like a 4K emulated version but "faithfully recreated" according to rare. It's not the exact same rom but it looks like a cleaned up version.

Xbox gets the updated version. Switch gets the original. MS has 4 player split screen. Nintendo has friends list based online.
