good funny RPGs?

Been playing some funny RPGs lately and it made me realize how enjoyable these games are when done right. hadn't really played any since EarthBound.

decided to randomly jump into the Fable series a few weeks ago and also started playing South Park Stick of Truth.

both have been amazing, although I'm really surprised how well done the South Park game is.

anyone have any other comedy/funny RPGs they recommend?

they straight up comedies, or just have some funny story arcs?

I've played some Yakuza games that had laughs throughout the game, but overall the story was depressing and dark af
The main story still has a serious tone, but the protagonist ichiban, the companions, and the side contents are very amusing.

But I guess the most important grip is the job system, very goofy yet fun as hell.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
There's West of Loathing, it's very funny but I didn't enjoy the actual gameplay. Check it out, you might dig it.

thanks, I was going to pick this up a while ago but I got stoned and confused and just gave up

I think what happened was I went on gamepass and saw it has the game you linked, The Bards Tale Trilogy, and then Bards Tale 4.

the game you linked and the bards tale 1 from the trilogy seemed like different games so I got confused and gave up

looking at it again, it looks like they are 2 distinct games

Dragon Quests can be funny time to time.

Escpially recent Dragon Quest III HD-2D has some hilarious moments.

Bards Tale 4 is also pretty good but a totally different game. The one I linked is a reboot from OG Xbox as an ARPG. Bards Tale 4 is a CRPG. It’s a really weird series but the ARPG is genuinely funny IMO.

When I play RPGs, I pretty much always pick serious stories.
The only thing in my library that I could identify as an RPG with humor is Divinity 2. It has some RPG elements, but is primarily an action game. Excellent writing, though. And lots of wry humor.

The funniest game I've ever played is Armed and Dangerous. Pure action, so no RPG at all.

Disco elyseum can be pretty funny…dark, but funny, especially if you choose to be a completely useless drug addicted alcoholic thieving cop.

South Park: The Stick of Truth is one of the most hilarious and ruthlessly offensive games I've ever played. Game had me howling multiple times throughout.

Final Fantasy IX has funny dialogue throughout. It also has a storyline that can be pretty serious, but the majority of the game amused me.

Let me think...

Yakuza: Like a Dragon - there are two options here, either you can abstract yourself from the past of the series and then yes it is perceived as a comedy, if not then the game will most likely cause deep depression
South Park: The Stick Of Truth (The Fractured But Whole) - a kind of humor of the south park, some people like it, some don't, but overall the game is a comedy
The Bards Tale - сomedy about fantasy and the RPG genre in general
Disgaea - this is not exactly an RPG but a tactical RPG, but it always had a large set of jokes and funny moments and never took itself seriously
Disco Elysium - It will sound strange of course, and again it is not exactly an RPG, but depending on your behavior, choice of dialogues and luck on the dice rolls it could be very funny.
Anachronox - quite a unique game with good humor, it is of course a bit old, so it won't be to everyone's taste.

This is what came to mind, in fact, a lot of RPGs have humor and good jokes, but usually this is not the focus of the game. Well, there are games that are made so badly that they are perceived as a comedy, but here everyone chooses the forbidden fruit for themselves =)

just beat Fable 2

debating whether to jump into Fable 3 or take a break and try Bards Tale. read some pretty horrible stuff about Fable 3, but who knows maybe I'll like it

Disco Elysium looks really good too

Yakuza like a dragon, comes to my mind. Entertaining and mostly funny, although the story it self is sometimes sad and tells the real problem of real world underground stories.

But there are true funniest series in my experience:

Mario RPG in Gameboy advance

its very hillarious in story and gameplay wise. The presentation is also very entertaining. Other than that, thousand doors also funny as well. I only play these two, but i think it could be applied the same to all of these series.

R.I.P. to Dungeon Runners.

That game was a comedy Diablo/PoE of the mid-2000s that made fun of it’s own genre and stereotypes with good satire.

If only it had released the game 10 years after it actually came out.

Haven't played it personally, but..

"The RPG With Too Many Spoilers: The Final Enemy's True Identity Is The Hero's Father"

Seems to fit what you're looking for. It's an RPG maker game, originally a Japanese game, I believe there is an English translation on github.

Costume Quest is a very light and fun RPG. It's definitely good for some laughs. I actually think it's the closest we've ever seen to a Calvin and Hobbes video game.

Its not an RPG but High on Life is pretty much the funniest game I've ever played.
I grabbed on CDKeys awhile back when it was 94%'ish off (90% now). It's actually a pretty good game.
I'm keeping it for later as it was still a bit too much for my old 1080. Experienced a few crashes in the level with the gorge and FSR looks like ass.

Since you're playing Stick of Truth I assume you also know about The Fractured But Whole. The Mario RPGs are also pretty funny, particularly:

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

Top Bottom
