Google I/O 2010 Thread of Moving to the Clouds and eating Froyo

Yep sucks in a way cause I've been waiting for my Hero update for ages and that's just for 2.1. Now that it's really close to coming out all this FroYo stuff starts turning up which means I have to wait aaaages for an official 2.2. Mainly because HTC have to rewire everything with Sense UI. I think if a good vanilla rom appears I'll manage to ditch Sense UI. Some of the launcher apps I've seen from the Tasty Desserts thread look brilliant.

I'm in the same boat, on an Eris. I just got the 2.1 update on Sunday, and already it's obsolete. I like Sense a lot for sure, but if I can get a vanilla ROM 6 months earlier, I can just just replace the stock keyboard and be fine with it. FroYo looks too hot to wait.

Anybody know offhand if the Eris can be rooted from OTA 2.1? I remember looking awhile back it took them quite awhile to root it.

Also, do those Flash 10.1 requirements mean no Flash for the Eris/Hero? It only has a Qualcomm 528Mhz CPU. If we're really lucky the requirements will drop as Flash matures, but I doubt it.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Does anyone have a link to today's stuff? I only see yesterday's stuff on the youtube page unless I'm missing something?

Yup. Instant rebate of $100 as well (so you pay $199 at store, not $299), and you get a $20 gift card.

Really now...

I kinda want an Evo 4G to use just as a mini tablet. I wonder if Sprint will do something stupid that would let me out of the contract without an ETF.

WebM and VP8 news. http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/...may-not-be-royalty-free-for-long/?mod=ATD_rss

JP: Let me ask you this: are you creating a patent pool license for VP8 and WebM? Have you been approached about creating one?

Larry Horn: Yes, in view of the marketplace uncertainties regarding patent licensing needs for such technologies, there have been expressions of interest from the market urging us to facilitate formation of licenses that would address the market’s need for a convenient one-stop marketplace alternative to negotiating separate licenses with individual patent holders in accessing essential patent rights for VP8 as well as other codecs, and we are looking into the prospects of doing so

I saw that edit. :lol

I know, Giz just picked part of the link and made it sound like that was his comment.

I fixed it anyway just in case people don't go to the link and think that's what he was saying.

Where can I handle an N1? Verizon stores? ATT?

Nowhere. It's likely the reason the N1 has sold so poorly
Google announced that Nexus One was heading to traditional retail outlets earlier this week, so you should expect T-mobile stores to have it in a few weeks.

so i guess no FM radio for n1?

That's hardware specific. They would not talk about that, only Froyo in general, but I believe the Nexus One OTA will have some specific hardware improvements.

The behind the scenes stuff Google are doing is amazing, particularly Android intents and the browser apis. However I really was hoping for a UI overhaul (I think it looks worse in Froyo), chrome bookmark and history sync in the browser, and big updates to some of the shittier apps (music, listen, a proper video player maybe?).

Google are still lagging way behind other companies when it comes to building hype and delivering something exciting. Why no Froyo today for n1 users?

Um, the whole tech world is excited about what Google just did, from beating Apple to the punch with iTunes in the cloud to market syncing to the fastest web browser on a mobile device and built in wifi hotspot functionality.

Expecting a UI overhaul in a +.1 update is silly.

at this point is it pretty much a waste to go for a nexus one? i don't really know what phones are on the horizon besides evo, but is it gonna be outdated real quick here?

Can anyone give a quick recap of the new/awesome/useful features coming in 2.2? Not looking for any exchange/business stuff, btw...

I'd greatly appreciate it! :D

Google have always been ahead of Apple in terms of tech and always will be. It's usability that is my concern.

Well I did say "hoping" rather than "expecting". In any case I would have liked to have seen UI be a bigger priority for them rather than them taking steps back (in my opinion).
