Google is closing down its Stadia cloud streaming service.

Pro tip: Never, ever, put Phil Harrison in charge of your project.
I just checked his bio which shows all the times he's joined and left companies. No joke, every time he resigns from a company its when the company or product line has tanked to its worst. Then he resigns and joins another company to do the same 3 years later.

Crazy that they are refunding everything people have bought through the google and stadia store, including hardware, how much is that costing them?!?

Well, I'm shocked.

But this is good:

We will be refunding all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store, and all game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia store.

I thought they might just tell people to fuck off and deal with it, but guess not

Wonder what Phil is gonna do now. Maybe this is it for him in the gaming industry.

We will be refunding all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store, and all game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia store. Players will continue to have access to their games library and play through January 18, 2023 so they can complete final play sessions. We expect to have the majority of refunds completed by mid-January, 2023.

It was pretty obvious their heart wasn't in it from the get go. And this rubbed off on consumers who didn't have confidence they would keep it going. Not to mention their distribution model was deeply flawed when compared to the closest competition of gamepass/xcloud.

Oh, I already thought Stadia shut down like a year ago. I must be confusing it with them shutting down their internal studios.
