Google is closing down its Stadia cloud streaming service.

Currently on the Stadia app.

What does "get" mean in this context? Were they "free" on Stadia Pro?

I think they were having to pay developers to develop a build for the platform. Which isn't unheard of at all for a new platform with a small user base, I think I remember reading where MS was spending a lot in the OG Xbox days to get games on there at first.

I'm not surprised about them pulling the plug on the public facing service, but I didn't think it would come this soon. Not with them launching in different regions, etc. I wonder if they will keep the Stadia platform running and upgraded it as needed in order to provide streaming as a backend service to publishers/developers for things like the Switch versions of modern games, etc. ?

Credit where it's due. Refunding all hardware and software ever bought is more than I would have expected.

It seemed inevitable from the start. But I still got it day one because I always had a special place for weird stuff like Stadia, I never bought a single game tho lol.

Google is closing shops after wasting billions of dollars.
Facebook is losing $10 billions yearly on their (VR) gaming endeavor.
Amazon hasn't had a major hit despite multiple acquisitions and massive investments in gaming.
Microsoft, after being in the industry for more than 20 years, had to spend over $75 billion just to remain competitive.

So can't we all agree that only Sony and Nintendo know what the heck they are doing?

P.S. This comment from Phill Spencer sounds even funnier today...

"When you talk about Nintendo and Sony, we have a ton of respect for them, but we see Amazon and Google as the main competitors going forward."

They are refunding all the games and addons bought since launch?! Oh wow

Luckily, Google has some deep pockets

Lots of people played some games for free then. They got the last laugh.

And those were who Phil considers to be their real competitors, right?

lol Google is such a failure. Imagine having unlimited funds and still unable to make a single game let alone console.
Because again it's not just about money, it's also about knowledge and passion. Those joke companies that think they can just come into the industry like that like Netflix and make their place, lmao rofl, i mean you're welcome if you have something truthful and worthy to bring in the gaming land, but if you're just here just to be there for money sucking then my message is GTFO, and for Stadia it's nice good riddance imo.

I think that quote is still valid, Google failed but there was reason for MS to be scared if it had not.

The mega purchases likely were greenling because of Google and Amazon.

look how fucking sexy
I still have the white one unused here (just opened to check it)
I bought it as a spare controller when it was on sale for 18€

TBH not bad for a free controller now.
Really really generous from Google to refund everything

Google's approach of the market was backwards..

Yes, get the tech ready, but also have the games. Not just multiplatform titles, but things made from the ground up for your technology. It has to have that day one..

The free tier was probably a big mistake too. Likely one of the things that lead them to set prices as high as they did for software that was available everywhere else for less. I guess the big Fifa cloud exclusive didn't last for long. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Wonder if I'll get refunded for the couple of months I was subscribed to Pro.

That took longer than I expected, to be honest.

Where is that quote from google saying that they wouldn't abandon Stadia as they did for their other services?

Shite news for those who enjoyed it. I don’t think they ever had that must have content you need to set yourself apart from the others, perhaps taking a while longer to build those games before launching they might of been better off.

A friend of mine still has onlive box and controller.

Despite its flaws, Wii U is pretty awesome as a homebrew machine and a Xenoblade X machine. I can't think of one redeeming quality about stadia.
It WAS until Steam Deck came out. Don’t get me wrong home brew is fun to tinker with but when you can just download emulators and they work without hacking on Steamdeck it’s a superior experience…only thing holding Steam Deck back is the lack of dock availability to easily play on TV without streaming or a long hdmi cord at the moment.

Only seems to apply to hardware and game sales from what I am reading from Phil Harrison's post

We will be refunding all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store, and all game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia store.

Shucks, I was going to buy a load of games, play them and get all my money back but they shut the store down.
