Google Pixel 2 - answers are coming Oct 4th

I think the depth map just isn't detailed enough

With a small camera phone sensor the difference in phase (used to detect depth) is miniscule.

What's amazing is that those two shots with the model are from the same site.

Just look at their sample pics and decide for yourself

DXO are nice enough to put up nice, big samples

Oh yeah I totally forgot about AndroidTV. Is it dead now or what? I feel like there's been no news relating to it in the last few years.

Sony and a few other brands use it in all their TVs, so no. It's definitely not high on Google's list of properties though, it just sort of quietly exists.

Jesus. Fuck software and just add the second camera.

Honestly I cannot stand either. Fake software DoF... Yuck.

The artifacts around her hair and head in the 8+ shot are especially atrocious. Makes it look like a cut out.

With that said the color accuracy and tone is miles better in the pixel shot.

Really, if you're that worried about how your photos look don't use any fake bokeh effects.

So I see third party USB-C to headphone Y cables that let you use headphones and charge at the same time... Anyone how well these work?

The depth map has trouble with noisy or random-patterned backgrounds, like tree branches. Can look very good in other situations. Grass and leaves nearly always throw it off.

yeah I want to see photos without the bokeh stuff for both phones. can't check that review site currently, but I mainly wanna see real world examples and not from that review lol

Th Verizon preorder thing seems confusing. What's a current plan? Unlimited? I have a family thing with my dad and I just pay him part of the bill every month so not sure how the finance part works if I wanted to do that. Is that included on the bill or a separate bill?

You people do know they can and likely fix things with software updates right? Ok so it probably won't ever be as good as two cameras but christ on a bike, it's not the most important feature on a phone. Who the fuck takes many of those types of photos anyway?

It's part of the monthly bill, it'll just add whatever the monthly charge for the phone is.

Really not impress with the 2XL, i was thinking of switching from my S8 to the 2XL and the specs aren't really much better, you'd be hard pressed to spot the difference from the front (bar the S8 curved edge) and the price is just to high (plus you loose the headphone jack) - it just doesn't seem like its worth the cost jump.

The only thing i would prefer on the 2XL is the software updates (and the orange power button - i like it :D), Samsung really drop the ball in this regard (i mean we don't even have 7.1 yet!).

so my phone (unlocked) gets here in mid november. What's the process for bringing it over to Google Fi? Should I sign up ahead of time or when I actually get the phone in hand?

e: trying to get off my family ATT plan.

How do you select to finance? It said I already have a finance account but at the check out it just asks for my credit card.

Tbh idk i set it up with my google account so it always gives me the option ☹️ sorry. You could manually add the account i think where it says add credit or debit card 🤔

I totally forgot the announcement and just saw a pixel xl for the first time.

The very first thing that came to my mind was "man, Apple really fucked up with the iPhone X".

Really weird that the Home Mini uses Micro USB instead of USB C. Actually now that I look at it, all 3 Google Homes use different power inputs.

I mean, I'm not sure what you'd expect coming from a phone this year especially one like the S8. The specs are going to be practically the same thing, it isn't like tech advances that fast.

How the fuck are those earbuds more expensive than the BeatsX and Jaybirds? Did they even talk up their sound quality?

The translation feature is cool but Google translate probably isn’t even ready for that yet.

Well, no headphone jack means I'm looking elsewhere.

I go through earbuds like toilet paper. I won't be going through $50-$150 BT earbuds like that.

P2 sounds up my alley otherwise, although a bit pricey for what it is.

Might sound like a dumb question... I cannot find for the life of me where to watch this event after the fact? Is it archived or posted to YouTube or something?

Every article I find has a link to a "live stream" which has since ended.

Edit: Was this a closed event? Here is the link every news site is posting but it's dead.

The Pixel 2 and its gigantic bezels look awful. Pixel 2 XL is way better. Who is going to purchase the normal Pixel 2?

Im looking at that option, i have a pixel 1 so i don't mind the bezels, i have a finance account with them and im paying my pixel still. if i upgrade to the normal 2 right i have about 400 left to be on the 1 so if i upgrade it would be the same i am paying. That way i get a new phone, but i can also wait fpr next year to see if they improve their XL design with more features like wireless charging and what not

I have it pre-ordered..internals/camera are the most important things to me. Bezels don't bother me and the xl wasn't worth the $200 permium to me. If money was no object I'd have gone with the xl for sure though.

It definitely is cool but unless I missed sth, both users need to have their own pair of buds. And let's face it, that makes it quite useless in the few situations most people would even use it.

verge confirmed, u speak to the earbud and your phone will play the translation in what ever language + pick up the response and translate back to you via earbuds. that is FUCKIN AWESOME
