Google to block ad-blockers in Chrome.

Google engineers have proposed changes to the open-source Chromium browser that will break content-blocking extensions, including various ad blockers.

Adblock Plus will most likely not be affected, though similar third-party plugins will, for reasons we will explain. The drafted changes will also limit the capabilities available to extension developers, ostensibly for the sake of speed and safety. Chromium forms the central core of Google Chrome, and, soon, Microsoft Edge.

Adblock plus is shit by the way, they allow advertisers to pay them and they whitelist them.

Stop using chrome. It's shit.

Use Brave or Vivaldi, the two best Chromium forks. Or just use Firefox. It's now faster and better than Chrome.

More and more firefox + duckduckgo seem like better options. The amount of information that google collects from their users is mind blowing. And now of course they're doing away with adblockers because it interferes with their ad based revenue. I don't know if google started out with evil overlord aspirations, but it's certainly pushing that agenda nowadays.

Wait so will this affect just google chrome or all Chromium based Browsers? The article is kinda unclear about it

Microsofts new browser to replace is supposed to be Chromium -based

Yeah I've read that.

But my question was if this will specifically affect google chrome or if it's a change being proposed for all chromium browsers ( Brave, Vivaldi, Yandex, etc)

Is Firefox more reliable for Multi Threading now?

I had originally dumped it because having too many tabs essentially crashed the thing.

Chrome seems to be starting to do this now so perhaps it it is now time to switch?

Of course they will, they have a huge advertisement business within them - Adsense.

And it does not surprise me Ad Block Plus gets a go, since they operate with a white list mechanic.

Basically Google eliminates Ad Block competition, and partners with Ad Block. It's a win win for both.

I wonder if an antitrust case could be brought up buy other blocking programs?

Well these changes are only "proposed" so far. If this happens, I'm done with Chrome. I've been using it for a long time, too. Being able to whitelist sites I care about while not having to sift through the bullshit on random things I'm clicking is not something I'm willing to part with any time soon.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
At work we lock down our PCs to use Chromium, and push uBlock Origin and custom whitelists to client PCs via Group Policy. There is far too much malware on ads "in the wild" to trust our end users. Of course we do this in addition to gateway antivirus, blackhole DNS, and a managed corporate desktop anti-virus application. We've had users complain that "when I look at this website at home, it's covered in ads..." in addition to their PCs running much faster for the majority of their browsing experiences. It's been an overall positive experience for everyone involved.

I guess if Google moves forward with this, we'll either be forced to a) not update to newer Chromium builds or b) find an alternative browser with similar capabilities.

Well, I'm in the process to slowly get Google's products out of my life anyway. Chrome was one of the first things to go, even though I respect the technical base that has been created with the Chromium-Project.

But it makes sense for Google, I suppose. They will spin it as protecting user data etc. while doing something good for their advertising and analytics business.

I will continue to use chrome. But think firefox, and alternatives will also receive a bit more use. I like ads in some content, like youtube, but not everywhere, some sites are unviewable with ads enabled.

Lol.

Hands up if you are an idiot who believes this.

Well the B is super easy - Firefox uses it's own engine and has Ublock add-on.

What is really scary is that outside of Firefox I can't think of any web browsers still using their own engine instead of Chromium. Well I guess there's Safari for people in OSX/ios enviroment.

It seems easy on the surface but remember I'm managing this solution for hundreds of workstations. So I'll have to do some research into how Firefox handles things - like can uBlock Origin and it's configuration be "pushed" to PCs via Active Directory Group Policy? I assume Firefox itself can be, though that could also be an incorrect assumption. We also push out browser settings via GPO, which Google is surprisingly easy as they provide ADMX files that can be loaded in our central store, etc. Can Firefox do the same?

I guess what I'm saying is that if this comes to pass, I'll need to do some research. Firefox seems like it'd be the right answer, but I'm guessing it won't be "easy".

Here's an interesting thing - if you view this thread, because the URL contains "block-ad", the alerts popup, edit button, post button, etc stop working if you're using ublock origin.

The more you know... Highlighting in big red font so nobody misses it if they suddenly wonder why the site's broken.

Back to the point, I'm using firefox for the most part, because a monoculture is dangerous in IT both due to the risk of Google doing something evil and a single point of failure if there's a security problem. Firefox is fast enough for me, and from a usability standpoint I can no longer do without https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tree-style-tab/ - note that it used to be better, removing the top row of tabs completely, but recent changes to firefox buggered that up, but it's still very useful.

Use Opera.
It has built in ad blocker which no extension can match (while supporting standard blacklist) and it supports goddamn "most recently used" tab switching (fuck your won'tfix google, extensions cannot do it).

Adblock plus is shit by the way, they allow advertisers to pay them and they whitelist them.
But you can easily pick up lists blocking everything.

Welp, glad to be on the firefox side of the mozilla-vs-google-which-one-doesn't-suck-this-month tick tock at the moment.

Now to continue hoping that mozilla doesn't fuck it up with an update.

Microsoft Edge is vastly superior to Chrome and Firefox and if your computer is newer it's already built in. The age of IE and old Chrome are done.

But does it render at 60hz?

Google is making it easier for me to migrate from Chrome to Firefox/Opera/Brave.

In case Evilore is wondering, no I don't ad block NeoGaf.

Ask me about my fanboy energy!
It's time to switch to Edge, will be based on Chromium, so I can easily switch

Thinks mods influence posters politics. Promoted to QAnon Editor.
I'm running Brave now. Imported info from Chrome and it just works. Very nice. Only Google Music doesn't work (humm....).

Becoming? They've been shitty for a fair while now. It's just now people are noticing.

You're right! It's been a while since I migrated to Microsoft services, they are much more mac-friendly btw.

Changing smartphones will be hard though. iPhones are ridiculously expensive and offer way less than Android flagships.

I heavily recommend Firefox if you are someone that likes privacy and doesn't want to support google.

Browser:
https://www.mozilla.org/de/firefox/new/

Web search engine:
https://duckduckgo.com/

Add-ons for Firefox:

https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/
-- adblocker with many settings, "firewall"
https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/privacy-possum/
-- blocks trackers, fingerprinting etc., works good with ublock origin
https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/privacy-badger17/
-- self-learning blocker from the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation)
https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/https-everywhere/
-- this add-on automatically tries to use the https variant of websites if possible
https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/remove-redirect/
-- if you dont want to be tracked via "helpful" redirects this tries to remove them (reddit, twitter etc. do this on any link)
https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/
-- this basically lets u create separate containers for different websites and/or tabs, sandboxing if you want to call it that way

Switching to other Chromium based browsers isn't really going to help much - what is needed is more support for those who still have their own engine

It’s ok google, I’ll just download the inevitible extension that bypasses your block to allow my ad-blocks because fuck you, that’s why.

I've heard people saying 'bu bu bu Chrome only uses free ram it doesn't actually slow down your pc sniff'.

Except I've had instances where my 16gb of ram was consumed to the point of paging file necessity (i.e my system came to a slow crawl) because chrome did not shut down properly and had stayed in memory while I had also started up a game. It was consuming 10gb+ of ram that wasn't there making my game die.
