Got an F on a college essay for swearing?

How in the fuck did you think that was a good idea?

I don’t even understand how you could come about a context where that would even work, assuming any semblance of proper academic style.

I'm sure there are some essays where it'd be okay to swear but I'm struggling to think of a good example.

You're not really supposed to act like a human in most academic essays but as a disembodied observer... who likely doesn't swear.

Maybe a paper on the origin of curse words?

Here's a kicker, what if you sourced information / quotes that had swears in them? Might be able to get away with that.

Don't actually do that.

Well GAF is obviously not in a position to help you, so why don't you write to the head of the department telling him that "This bitch who calls herself a professor teaching her fucking joke of a class failed you because she obviously does not know that 'fuck' and 'shit' are proper English words that are suitable to be used in your goddammed essay submission"?
/s obviously, or maybe not obvious enough to the OP

The subject matter is probably part of the reason he got an F. He's writing on a serious subject like abuse of the elderly and throwing around fuck and shit.

Like, Jesus Christ.

Sorry, this is what her feedback should have said:

"No one gives a shit what you "have to say", you dumb fuck."

I've recently discovered that the Brits like to put punctuation outside quotes while the US standard is put them inside.

So this is some next level shit for me.

Yeahhh, using swear words in a college essay is absolutely not advisable.
You screwed up OP.

You could try talking to your professor about the essay if it nuked your overall grade and ask for mercy, otherwise just take the F and learn from it.

Because h had to make it clear how he personally felt.... in an academic essay... I love it.

He ain't gonna post that shit, ya'll. That is a dog pile from hell.

But OP, you're writing a college essay. There is a certain level of academic professionalism to be expected. Cursing on your paper is a very bad look.

Even I'd personally ding you for that one. Not a complete F, but I understand your professor's decision regardless.

Seriously. If someone thought that it was acceptable to swear in a college essay I'd probably wager the rest of the essay isn't going to be Pulitzer Prize-quality either.

Getting an F seems pretty harsh. I could see knocking you down a grade or two and sternly telling you that that's a terrible idea.

Curse words are, essentially, slang. They have no place in an academic paper.

Unless you're quoting someone word to word, I don't think swearing yourself is a good idea for an academic paper. The language expected in this kind of work has a more professional approach. Ask if you can resubmit an edited version and make sure your teacher knows why you felt the need to use such words on the matter, and apologize too.

...used the word fuck and shit twice to make my feelings clear and add extra concern to the topic (abuse of elderly people by whoever) and I had a lot to say about that honestly.

OK, I know I'm piling on by posting again, but your "feelings" were almost certainly irrelevant to the essay. So, adding in this language (in addition to being inappropriate) added nothing to the topic.. I'm sure your professor wanted you to discuss facts or the larger social implications of this abuse or brainstorm solutions...anything other than: "This fucking shit is horrible." Adding in swear words in this context just signals: "I am adding in filler! See that I care! Please don't fail me!"

EDIT: Yeah, like excelsiorlef said!

What the hell? Never post cursing or swear words in any academic or professional papers you submitted unless you're quoting somebody and you think it's appropriate to do so.

In the immortal words of William Shakespeare in his opening line of "A Treatise on the Modern Fucking College Essay":

"To swear or to swear a lot that is question, now give me an A and stop asking me to censor myself you stupid fucking jerk."

Nah, that shit should be pretty obvious, like not turning in an essay written with crayon on a Toaster Strudel box.

This thread went fast... wow.

Okay, so it looks like I'm in the wrong, but, this doesn't explain why I need to censor myself as a writer. Maybe I'm simply unfiltered but I think that's a good thing, I figured in high school you'd avoid that, but in college you're an adult, you can freely write how you want and get your opinions across without having to worry if you tailor it to whoever is reading it, since it's your work. Maybe I'm getting angry about nothing however I don't understand how your choice of language is something you can be penalized for. I re-read the essay and admittedly I recognize some things that could be fixed but even with that scrutiny and barring in mind this isn't my writing course a B seems perfectly fair. Have a read but I know I'm about to get dogged on like crazy regardless. No, I'll just post the relevant uses of swears. It's partially too personally and I'm not rewriting the damn thing.

"Watching the film was really sad, quite morbid, fucked up, and too close to home"

"It went from "I don't care about you" to "fuck you" and I still feel that
way to this day"

"They're awful, sickening, fucked realities"

"The emotional problems my REDACTED still suffers from REDACTED, I've came to the point
where if REDACTED REDACTED died today, right now, I wouldn't give a shit"

"Apologizes that are all bullshit and
emotions that end up with the person hurting more and more"
