What's stopping people from buying these from scalpers, damaging them, claiming it got damaged during shipping, and then forcing the seller to refund you using ebay's money back guarantee?

Nothing.
You still have to return the card dude. Plus any normal person would have coverage on shipping. 😂

Not that I have that kind of disposable income even if I did I wouldn't ever spend that on a GPU. My gaming PC died (surge) about 18 months ago it was mid range nothing crazy a 1440p mostly. I have been content enough with GeForce Now, for me personally it is good enough for what I want.

Like no one saw this coming and with the "news" of suppliers with low stock, things could only get worse, in this case, more expensive

Scalper prices. How are the actual retail prices?

They were raised as well. MSI and ASUS just said "nah we like $300-400 a pop more". Some models are above $3000 MSRP now.

But they are sold out. So not available.

I think $6000 for a GPU is cheap. If you consider you can turn up shadows from high to ultra and see zero difference but sacrifice some framerate. It is worth the money.

Some people buy an 77'' 4K OLED TV + Switch 2 + PS5 Pro + Desk + Herman Miller Embody Chair + Couch + take wife on 2 month vacation + 6 month supply of chips and mountain dew for that money.

but on a personal level I think upgrading from a good GPU to a 5090 is worth more than all the things I just listed.

Was checking full pc prices with 5090, range is between 6k and 8k. Might get worse down the road.

Rich people don't care. It's not like they are stupid either, imagine the difference between $2000 and $4000 being like the difference between $2 and $4 for you or whatever. It doesn't make any difference, it's still disposable pocket money. That's why they are the best target audience. Even when they know they are being scammed, they still don't care.
that's true. of course.
The problem comes from feeling that the price should be something else... and it used to be a common item in the past.

The 5080 is 1900$ now in Poland lol. It got even more expensive... and that's for some garbage tier gamerock version
Ive found multiple for 1400-1500 right next door, they dont seem to be selling or worth it imo.

Not a single 5090 in my country, it feels like theyve released like 5090 of 5090s worldwide and scalpers are going to have a field day just because of extreme scarcity.

Nothing. The other piece of this here is they most likely are not even paying, people are just bidding super high, not paying and the scalper will relist in a week.

What gets me is that literally nobody needs one of these cards. Its just a huge premium to do and play the same stuff as everyone else a little bit faster.

This has to be the lamest status symbol shit ever.

I'd imagine they are selling in very small numbers overall at that price. There's always a few idiots that will pay any price for anything.

And this is exactly why a rumored Xbox/PC hybrid with multiple storefronts might actually kill if executed properly
That is actually a good point. MS and AMD have a window of opportunity if they can deliver. I can see AMD delivering decent performance on GPU side (say 5070 or maybe higher), but can MS not fuck up?

One good thing to come of this is that 4000 series owners need not apply and the resale value of their cards have gone up lol. Its a skip generation anyways.

Heck high end 3000 series owners are still good, for the most part. And even 2080Ti's can pass at 1080P, with the release of DLSS 4.

Blame the people that are buying them ffs.

Switch 2 will be the same. Probably not £5000 but you get the idea.
Nah, Nintendo is going to have much bigger inventory vs Nvdia’s paper launch.

There will certainly be initial shortages/scalping but they should even out.

My coworker sold a high end watch on eBay last year. The seller wanted a refund and he shipped back an empty box. Nothing ebay or the police could do about it. He filed a police report with the area the buyer was in and they basically told him he was SOL.

This is not financial advice.

It's called fraud bro, anyone shipping these out are insuring them.
They can't prove it's fraud. That's the liability when selling on ebay.

And for the insurance to pay out, the seller has to prove it was damaged during shipping, otherwise UPS/FedEx/USPS/DHL wont't pay out.

And even if they do pay out, claims can take well over two months before they get their money back.

And? Keeping the card isn't the point, destroying their stock and wasting their time/money is. See above about coverage.

And when you file a claim, assuming it pays out, you're only reimbursed for the declared value + shipping, not for the price of the insurance, which for something over $7,000 would be more than $100.

Do you really think the seller won’t be taking pics/videos of packing or shipping it? They will be covered and you will be playing with fire. There are easier and less risky ways to waste scalpers’ time than breaking the law.

The company with the second-highest market cap in the world stops producing their flagship product early, then launches its successor with barely any stock. There is only so much you can blame on scalpers. The game is rigged.

ebay doesn't accept video evidence during arbitration, and pictures of what it looked like before they shipped it don't matter if you're claiming it was damaged during shipping.

When it comes to cases like this, ebay will always side with the buyer. Scalpers aren't as covered as you think, and they have no way of proving it's fraud, even if they were inclined to take legal action.

The most they can do is spew threats and file a police report in their state if they think fraud occurred.

Doesn't this make you just as bad? Becoming a sort of scammer yourself? I'd say worse. At least those people are entering into a voluntary contract - you're just suggesting to destroy someone's merchandise out of spite.

Scalpers enter into a voluntary contract with ebay assuming all risks with buyers when selling on their platform, so no.

Also it's weird to be a bleeding heart for scalpers. Are you one or something?

Even having the disposable income, for the first time I'm questioning if it's really worth it, I have a pretty good gaming pc but this is really pushing me to get back to consoles and forget all about GPU and HW in general... It's not the GPU price per se it's the fact that it will still be used to play again cb2077 or another old game... There's no games that could really push it other than very high FPS and 2 path traced titles...

MSI has increased the price of the Vanguard 5090 here in Canada by almost 500$ Canadian to reach 4050$ plus tax ( up from 3570$ which is the price I had when I back ordered it with the 5090 Astral )

This is the official price now ( Same price as Asus Astral ). Astral didnt get a price update yet on bestbuy. But I am going to assume they will at one point when bestbuy gets updated with the new price list from Asus.

none of my cards have shipped yet. both says by Feb 21.

The issue is that the shit you are talking about scammers use all the time against legit sellers. It’s fucked up.

And 90% of the blame goes to Nvidia for paper launch and to the stores for not implementing a waitlist ordering process.

PC Gamers and self-respect are like two ships passing in the night.
This the same people that made Sony go back on PSN trash ? This the same people that didnt buy the latest Horizon "remaster" when the first game when originally came to steam sold more than 2mil, because they saw through sony's bs ???

Imagine insulting the users of the biggest platform on the planet because some rich enthusiasts are eager to pay whatever. Meanwhile my cousin still plays most new games on High with his 1070 Ti and has no plan to change it soon. You dont know that much about pc gamers lil bro, sit down.

its good for us console gamers. People will realise the great value of console gaming.
A tariff console price will still be way cheaper than these standalone GPU price now.
I’ll never understand why console gamers think less competition is a good thing.

Most that think this way I've been able to have lengthy conversations with it always comes down to one of two things: They're a fanboy or they can't afford a high end PC.

No matter what platform you game on, competition is healthy for the market.

AMD, Intel and maybe a Chinese company could swoop in and fuck Nvidia up by pricing their cards normally: $299 (XX60 equivalent) for the entry model (16 GB VRAM minimum), $450 for mid-spec model (XX70 equivalent), $650 for high-spec model (XX80 equivalent) and $950 for the enthusiast model (XX90 equivalent).

You dont know that much about pc gamers lil bro, sit down.
  • I've been into PC Gaming since the late 90s.
  • I do 3d rendering for commercial clients, so I invest heavily in "pro-sumer" gear.
    • I spent 23k on 2 PC rigs in 2022, both of which , unsurprisingly, also make really good gaming rigs.
I've watched the industry turn rapacious over the course of two decades because of incredible anti-consumerism from companies like Asus (even before it was fashionable to trash them), Corsair, and many, many others. Throughout all of this, I've watched PC Gamers lap it up and ask for seconds.

I'm glad your anecdote about the 1070TI (which is also kind of sad) provides an example to the contrary, but it's not the trend. And before you go posting the Steam hardware survey, please consider that in this brave new world, the high end now sets the pace, whereas 10 years ago, the mid-range did. The only thing the Steam hardware survey tells me is how rotten the industry is, and just how unaffordable it has become.

I think the whole goddamn thing is ripe for disruption and I can't wait to see it happen.

At what point do people realize that this is the reality now and that no amount of whining and hand wringing will stop it.

These are increasingly unaffordable and it’s up to the industry to change that. The industry though has moved away from gaming cards mostly to other things. Much of this is due to lack of competition too. It’s is what it is.

This is spot-on. We basically have to wait for industry disruption.

No, but I don't think this is just or an ethical thing to do in response. To me it seems worse, intentionally destroying a limited supply and advocating abusing a known system because of your feelings. Good job proceeding to an attack, though.

This as well.
