Great feature if it happens, would love for Sony to adopt such a feature.

This is the Xbox One DRM....

It's exactly what it allowed, but it also removes the ability to sell used copies outside of authorized retailers who have the system/software to "undo your entitlement."

edit:

. The patent describes a system that allows an external disc drive to authenticate an Xbox game and allow the player access to the digital version of that game through the Xbox Series S Games Store

Uhh.. Brad... Brad are you OK? This is not "disk to digital" this is just "a disk drive for Xbox Series S" ROFL

Why is he not linking to the actual patent or mentioning it's name?

It is, but in a manner that benefits the consumer. Why wouldn't you want to have the option of turning a physical license into a digital one?
I absolutely want that.. but in what way is it different from the Xbox One method?

I loved the Xbox One DRM announcement personally.. because I don't sell my games.

But turning a disk into a digital entitlement w/o a system in place to undo that entitlement when you sell the used copy, is useless. It also requires near constant online checks... all the "anti-Consumer" things Xbox one DRM had outlined.

I haven't read the thing, but how does it differentiate one disc from another? They're all the same pressing right (if from the same run)? Or do they all have some kind of unique ID somewhere that the console can read?

MS has a patent for printing disks w/ a unique signature on them that allows for a disk to become a digital entitrlement.

Search NeoGAF for 2013 info on this.. not sure WTF Brad is even on here, that aspect is old, and consumers clearly and loudly rejected it due to the things it requires (always online, complication for used sales).

I don't think they would prevent reversion. That would make the used game market a mine field of scam artists. It would probably pull your digital license if the physical copy was used on a different account. I agree though, this needs to be done carefully.

Yeah, I know they were planning that for XBO. But do they still print the discs like that even though they never implemented the system?

I assume the disc. Has a unique I'd and will let one copy have a digital version. If you trade in the disc anyone else would not get to use it for digital. But could still use the disc. .

Brad sams has no fucking clue what he is looking at:

It is unknown whether the patent would allow players to redeem a digital version of the game to add permanently to their digital library, or whether the patent would simply be the basis for an external disc drive Xbox Series S players could purchase if they wanted to play backwards compatible Xbox One games. It would seem unlikely that players would be allowed to duplicate their copy of a game if there were any chance the disc could then be sold and duplicated again, though perhaps the patent could identify whether the disc had been validated before like with the codes for redeeming digital games through the Xbox Games Store.[size]

Why not link the patent you dolt? lol

If they really did this, they should also allow you to "unregister" the disc so that someone else can register it instead. Otherwise this is pretty much physical DRM again.

Sounds familiar.
Yes Sony had the same tech as MS... MS announced plans to use this tech in Xbox One.. it enabled "disks to become digital entitlements' and of course all of the things consumers poo-poo'd.

Sony never announced any plan to use that tech but it was heavily rumored they had the same plans.

That patent you are linking to is something MS also had in 2012/13.

Brad Sams has no fucking clue what he is talking about, that is the only clear thing here lol

Yes drm.
but think what pandor box would be open if they let you trade your digital right to a game to someone else. that would be awesome for consUmer nut nightmare for xbox

I'm not saying they should let you just transfer the digital copy. But that you should be able to "release" it so that someone else can use the disc to register it instead. Only one person would be able to play the game.

Be surprised if this comes to pass. The number of patents posted on here that nothing ever comes from.
It almost did in 2013, until the backlash where they found other clever drip-fed ways to their death by 1,000 cuts end-game DRM.

Someone pointed this out already but this is for the series s. You plug in an external drive through USB, pop in a physical copy of the game and you can download and play it. Pull the disc out and you can't play it.

It also looks like it can use a local network to authenticate the disc? Maybe pop the game in a other Xbox or PC on the same local network? I could be reading it wrong.

I always imagined something like trading in your disc at a store, the store clerk breaking the disc in front of you and giving you back the plastic box and adding the game to your account.

Patents don't mean anything these days, everyone has patents for something or another.

I don't see this coming to fruition, even if it's a good thing, any time soon.
