...so you don't want to infiltrate an aircraft carrier, steal a harrier jet, and then fuck shit up?

:(

GTA V won't succed by coping Saints Row over the top open world experience.

It needs to follow the path set by RDR. A beautiful, atmospheric, open world. It also needs simplefied controls, and a framerate higher then 10. But it also can't be as boring as LA Noire. It needs to find a middle ground between realistic and fun.
And TANKS!

If it's in LA, it needs another porn star character like in Vice City.

Well I just hope they dont set the game in present day.. L.A in the 60´s- 70´s with all the hippy madness would be awesome, and the soundtrack could be incredible..

God yes. One of the worst aspects of RDR and GTA4. At least Max Payne 3 seems to remedy this, it better carry over to GTA5.

Playing as a cop might be cool, actually. Or multiple characters, including a cop. Never really liked playing as sociopathic gangsters in the previous gen games. Jimmy Hopkins and John Marston are my favourite R* open-world protagonists, the rest I don't find particularly likable.
CJ handled awesome in San Andreas.

Sure it could have been smoother, especially by modern standards but go back and play that game.
Running, biking, whatever. It was FAST.

Max Payne 3 and GTA V? How can they manage such a workload?
I think games at Rockstar are pretty much always collaborative at this point with multiple studios pitching in. Red Dead Redemption was a San Diego production, but had plenty of key people from the GTA games/R* North work on it.

Obviously we don't know much of anything about V, but I was randomly browsing Twitter earlier and I saw a post with the GTAV tag saying "What I've been hard at work on has finally been announced. GTA V :) " and he's a designer at R* San Diego.

They have multiple studios, though Rockstar's main studio in NYC takes care of the writing, recording and such (with help from people like Lazlow.)

I would imagine they're much more involved in GTAV than MP3. Meanwhile, Rockstar North does all the programming for GTA and some other studio works on building MP3.

Here's what they could do. Do the episodes thing again maybe. Luis was the crazy one with billionaire friends who would get him access to APCs, expensive military weapons, the fanciest cars & shit. Then you can have the the real grimy motherfucker like Johnny, and the main character could fill both roles somewhat.

I'm sure they'll find a way to make the game everyone wants.

im not going to be excited just yet.. the first reveal of GTA 4 had no game play in it.. i don't think we will see gameplay until the VGA or maybe later

I don't mind "the fun", but leave the bungee jumping, or sky diving, or whatever as side activities. I really don't want my serious character going from murdering small time drug dealers with a glock, to catching helicopters by launching off a ramp on a dirt bike.

Make the missions go up in scope, but not silly. The middle & end missions should be more "Heat", with some "Bad Boys" thrown in for levity.

This is my my opinion anyway. I like the serious tones R* has recently, with some nice humor on the side.
Well i agree, but while RDR did this while being fun to play, with lots of things to do, GTA4 became a chore pretty quickly.
Also as said multiple times, they need to focus the main plot in a shorter span, and spent the gained time on extrastuff, because the middle parts of their games are always tedious, narratively speaking.
And if they want to do a "serious business" story, they have to mind the context more.
You can't have Niko going all serious about the horrors of war in a cutscene, just to become mr. psycho the next second, cracking jokes while running over pedestrians with a truck.
Even the story itself was schizophrenic, since he was looking for a new life, far from the horrors of his past, but had no problem killing tons of people, just for money.

I like them to go a little more consistent and moody than San Andreas, because i like the variety of having both Saint's Row 3/GTA5 to play, not feeling like one is the bad clone of the other.
But again, this does not mean that no fun is allowed, just gotta get creative.

You make that game, that game sucks. Can't please everyone.

Maybe it will be a Pulp Fiction-like thing with all the different characters, crossing each others' paths, maybe even doing missions for one another.

Co-op too maybe?

They could always ditch the idea of having you play as one character throughout. Give us a few different personalities that unlock through playing (like how new employers show up on the map). Each character could have their own sub-plots and side missions and perks that inform the overall story. At that point the city itself could be the main character.

I would not be sad if they removed multiplayer completely.

They won't, of course.

ah, noooooo. i like my one character. what they need to do is make the main character more customizable like SA.

I am ready for this. They will learn from the mistakes of 4 I'm sure. RDR was incredible. Noire was just okay though.

When you think about it, GTA IV was their first next gen game. They were using a new engine on completely new hardware and creating something that was much more complex than previous games in the series.

We're at a point in time now where they have a very good understanding on what the current hardware can do, and any initial issues they may have had when developing the first game, they probably have a good grasp on now. Not to mention the many years of evolution their game engine has been through.

I'm sure when looking back at GTA IV now, they know what things they could have done better and what they can improve on.

More people needed to play Mafia Work and experience the joys of that multiplayer mode. I have way too many great stories from fucking around online with friends.

Yeah well they can keep local and private but GTA like RDR was completely ruined by cheaters and douchebags who'd kill you just to be an asshole.

Damn I'm still smiling about this news. I love me some Grand Theft Auto. Behind Bungies new ip, Blizzards Titan and Respawns new ip, this is next on my list of most wanted! I just hope there All on next gen hardware...

man, earlier today i was sitting at the library reading some magazine, kinda bored, and thought to myself "i wonder if there's a topic on GAF that could get me excited".... pulled out my phone, and then this is the first thing i see. fucking perfect timing R*, thanks.

GTAV will likely join GTAIV, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and The Last Guardian (zero doubts) as the definite experiences for me this gen. could not be more hyped to see the first trailer next week!

some things i hope are in the game:

- skateboards (come on, let me cruise the streets and do a few flip tricks down stairs!)
- bicycles (should've been in GTAIV)
- different seasons, maybe have Christmas or Halloween (like in Bully!)
- take part in a team sport, made hilarious with the Euphoria engine (hockey, basketball or something)
- more interesting indoor spaces
- keep a serious tone in the main story but also have lots and lots of satire and hilarity in the game world/side missions
- less shooting missions, more missions that introduce entirely new mechanics

There should be more tampons in gaming
Im hoping for the return of activities to do with your character like working out at the gym and so on. I'd love to see turf wars return as well those were great. Actually a next gen San Andreas would suffice. Also what you eat should play a role in your characters appearance and should have a direct effect on gameplay, ie incessantly eating burgers fattens your character and reduces their stamina yet working out will tone your character and increase their stamina and fisticuff damage.

Smoother controls are a must. Sliding to cover, taking cover, zooming in on targets and driving should be chores. GTAIV controls were HORRIBLE. Mafia II did combat and driving much better than GTAIV so Rockstar could learn a thing or two from those guys. Also no more dumbass missions that aren't dependent on player skill. Like why should I be forced to quit a game because dumbass Jacob can shoot a fucking rocket from a helicopter to save his life!?

No more police brutality please, if Im fighting a person let police come after BOTH of us not just me. And if Im being a good samartian and kill a guy for stealing a ladies purse or picking a fight with someone I should be rewarded not shot dead.

Also expand on the cell phone. So many possibilities exist for it. I should be able to use it to engage in drug and human trafficking deals and should have a calendar where I can specify times and dates for going out with the "team" and engaging with love interests, no more npcs calling and our relationship is hurt because Im on a mission. I can simply automatically put the phone on speaker mode and either have the game automatically set a date or do it for myself at my convenience.

These are just some ways I think GTAV can be the best one yet because GTAIV was so manly with its animation, driving, combat and camera system I honestly don't understand how it even managed to get 9's let alone 10's. A return to form would be greatly appreciated. Also a more focused multiplayer mode, thats persistent that focuses on gang territory and wars for control of neighborhoods and small cities would be cool, where every clan would "own" a town/neighborhood and have to defend and attack others to survive. Your ranks and territory would grow with the actual players, land and resources you won in other gang wars. The goal would be to bring in more drugs, money and sex and all that good stuff to secure food and protection for the people that live in your territory. I think that's a unique way to freshen the multiplayer stance by actually putting reasoning behind player action.

I honestly wish that the game world wouldn't be based on a real city. I think they could accomplish so much more if they just crafted an original city. It would make it a lot more interesting too.

They've pretty much covered all the metropolises. Not sure what new they could do that isn't already an existing city.

Mildly interested - Rockstar could win me back after the snoozefest that was 4. Keys to success...

1. Don't be boring.
2. Fix the awful car physics to be more fun like the rest of the series (see point 1).
3. Pick a cool setting for the city and time - no more rehashes.
4. Don't be politically correct, play to your strengths.
5. Simultaneous launch on PC.

I was talking more R*'s current gen efforts. The characters have the turning radius of a semi truck.

Maybe its a decade ahead of that but a prohibition era GTA would be neat. Not sure what to make of that bill though and I'd be a bit puzzled if this GTA really is based so far in the past.

Red Dead Retribution. Sequel to Red Dead Redemption. Boom.

I know I agree, I was pointing to CJ to show how far they've fallen.

Went from a fast, fun to control dude to a tanky snail named Niko.

So much could be done with D.C. They have chance to really lean into the zeitgeist and do some socio-political commentary above and beyond what they've done before. There's nothing relevant about LA. What, "Lol TMZ jokes!!11!!"?

As long as the game is set after car radios were invented, then I'll be happy.

One of the greatest things in gaming is cruising along the freeway in San Andreas with K-DST blaring out Free Bird.

Which is why I couldn't understood the talks of the game going back to the 1800s. Music and television play such a huge part of this series.
