They launched the game and, somehow, it kept selling like a brand new release month after month, year after year. I would sit on any new project until that stopped too.

honestly, that's the approach every company should have: build a project to last and go for something new... leave sequels for 6-10 years down the line.

Just think, GTA5 came out on PS3 and 360, and is fast approaching 10 years old.

By the time we actually get GTA6 it'll probably be closer to 11 or 12 years since 5.

In the same time period we saw GTA3, Vice City, San Andreas, GTA4, and it's DLC.

That's incredible and is a long time for such a giant in the marketplace.

Skyrim never stopped selling though. They both re-released the game every gen(360/PS3 gen -> Xbox One/PS4 gen -> XSS|X/PS5 gen). So many people claim to have bought each game multiple times. As far as I am aware Bethesda never re-released any of their older games, while Rockstar did the "Definitive Edition " for III/Vice City/San Andreas and probably do the same for GTA IV. Even on PC Rockstar removed the older games so you have to buy the newer Definitive Edition, while the 2011 oldrim although unlisted from Steam, can still be bought if you have the direct link.
Rockstar definitely didn't just "launch the game" and sat. I am not aware of any free update like Witcher 3. Would love to see Rockstar having the balls to this https://www.pcmag.com/news/fallout-4-is-getting-a-free-next-gen-update-in-2023

They already do in GTAV as well as RDO.

RDO was so fubar from day 1 on the PC, they were able to spawn in on you, add modded creatures on top of you, steal you stuff, transport you like an admin, etc..

There was a reason R* dropped support for it, the game was fucked since launch and there was no fixing the problem unless they ran full dedicated servers instead of sucking up your internet with the shitty P2P from decades ago.

Which is why I preferred playing RDO on the consoles, but then they dropped it all, so no 60fps, no play.

Over 220million copies combined between RDR2 and GTAV and STILL no full dedicated servers. P2P hackfests. Now, it will get even worse. Cheap fucks.
