Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Game has the best water rendering I’ve seen. It looks sublime.

It reminds me of the original Watch Dogs. A PS3 game. 2 screenshots, game running on PC (of course):

Is Watch Dogs worth playing today? I got it years ago for free, think it was bundled with a GPU purchase or something, but I never played it given the controversies surrounding downgrades and some issues it had at launch.

First one? Hell yeah. It feels way more fresh and unique today than when it was released. Most games these days are (un)funny, goofy story with unlikable hipster characters. Watch Dogs 1 has a serious tone, serious story and can seriously look amazing on PC with this mod.

Watch Dogs 2 is also underrated as hell. Immersive sim elements, open ended gameplay, amazing city up there with Los Santos if not even better and stunning visuals.

Look at this amazing fog:

oh come on, its not even close. This is a classic example of "what have you done for me lately"

He is referring to the light interaction with the surface of the water, i.e. reflections, not so much the simulation. So in that context, Sea of Thieves doesn't even belong in this conversation.

And yet it has terrible physics, looks horrendous when swimming. Best water is in Counter-Strike 2 and it's not even close. SM2 water just has decent shading and that's about it.
I haven’t jumped in yet. That’s why i said rendering.
Arkham Knight. Horizon 2.
Nah. I immediately compared both games and shading is way more realistic here.
Hmm, don't know about that. It certainly has the worst physics though.

Still looks very cartoony and gamey. Just like Arkham knight and horizon. Spiderman water looks far more realistic.

Yeah and SM2 is not even close. Having blurred RT reflection of buildings has no barring on the look or "rendering" of water as most of the reflection on the water is coming from the sky and light.

Its not even close, SM2 water rendering is hideous compared to SOT.

There's so many things that goes into water rendering to make it look good and blurred RT reflection of environment (buildings) is not even on the list.

For example light and color transmission. Water Transparency. Light scattering that creates sparkles.
Caustics, water foam, light surface bounce, fog light scattering in water, water/underwater blur transition, self-shadowing, light reflections, realistic water detail, water effects (splashes, waves, foam), etc.

I posted this before and it makes more point. No RT is involved in this shot and yet its water rendering I have ever seen in a game engine.

I’m playing Spiderman 2 on fidelity + VRR Smoth + 120 hz and it’s the most impressive thing I’ve played on PS5 (and XSX), like, this is the shit I’ve buyed the PS5 for.

Some of the missions I’ve done 8 hours in are breathtaking, Insomniac snapped the fuck out.

MJ character model is pretty mid tho, Ganke too, Harry looks great.

Word. Real life needs to upgrade to a 4090 lol.

And the reason water looks like that is not because of the blurred reflection of buildings no sure why that is so hard to grasp.
Almost Everything I listed that goes into water rendering is showcased here in these two videos and in the twitter video from Unreal engine.

I know everyone hates Ubisoft, but the water and water physics in AC Origins and Odyssey are still some of the best I’ve seen, 6 years on.
Oh, people can say what they want about the open world AC games (I love all three personally), but the graphics of all three are absolutely sublime. Odyssey in particular for me is such a beautiful looking game, though I’m a little biased due to my love for Greek mythology and culture.

AC games have been pretty overall for a long time now.

You really get a sense of just how much they dialed up the traversal speed as he's mid-swings parallel to the water surface. And the motion blur compliments the faster speeds nicely. Now imagine that sense of speed when you're swinging just above street level in between skyscrapers :messenger_fire::messenger_fire::messenger_fire:

Turning dreams into reality. Forget visuals. This is the best next gen experience. And I haven't even buffed my traversal speed yet.

Game looks nothing like this heavily edited, heavily compressed Twitter video. Don't post bullshit, post your own screenshots / videos.

Chief relies on blurry twitter video the same way the people who spread misinformation on twitter rely on blurry twitter videos of Arma 3. Video that's so blurry it fools laymen into thinking its a Ukraine/Russia or Israel/Gaza war footage.

Ganke making the retarded woke silent clap in a cutscene was peak stupidity, holy shit this game is stupidly woke :lollipop_squinting:

For people who are not familiar with silent clap, is the shit they use in that socialist video

I expect some motherfucker speaking about points of personal privilege by the end of the game :lollipop_squinting:

Am I crazy or most of the Spiderman pics in this thread just doesn't look that impressive. Especially the water, looks waaaay too crisp and even, very unconvincing. The art direction is mediocre at best, just your everyday "hyper realistic" stuff, and it's not even that realistic.

I have to commend the game for nailing traversal tho, the impressive part for me is how fast you can swing through the city. But just for graphic I it just looks slightly above average in modern triple-A games for me.

The most impressive graphics in last couple years for me is still Cyberpunk after 2.0, RDR2, and TLOU2. Spiderman is nowhere close, even Horizon looks way better.
