Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

I expect ray tracing from these games because they are literally not doing anything else thats next gen. So i'm like at least tack on RT as an afterthought. RT is not required to make games look next gen. They could use higher quality assets, way better baked lighting, and give us something like Deep Down or the Rebirth ue4 demo. Neither used RT.

they least they couldve done was add RT in HZD to fix some of the issues that were present in HFW. Same goes for TLOU1, If you are going to reuse TLOU2 assets and lighting, fine, just tack on an RT feature or two. Dont just copy paste. Do SOMETHING. Ghost of Tsushima 2 looks way too similar to the first game. Why do the character models look worse than the pre-render trailer for the first game? I can excuse the smallish leap if they were spending all that gpu budget on RT effects because i know it will ultimately result in a more cohesive title. But again, thats the bare minimum i expect.

RT isnt the only thing thats not being utilized by these first party studios. No one is using the primitive/mesh shaders. No one other than insomniac is using the IO tech; cerny's so-called super secret sauce. no is using the CPU to push physics or destruction. 8 cores 16 threads running at 3.5 ghz. A massive upgrade from 8 cores 8 threads running at 1.6 ghz. And nothing. Again, insomniac did use it to increase traffic and NPC density so props to them.

I would take TLOU1 that had full scale destruction with PS4 quality graphics. I would've taken a TLOU1 with the e3 2018 graphics fidelity, the character models, the physics, and motion matching animations. Fuck RT. I wouldve given up my left nut to play the E3 2018 demo.

YFFP314.gif

Yeah, I was highlyyyyyy disappointed that TLOU 2: Remastered wasn’t the E3 2018 version. Seriously, what was so hard to give us that version.

Seriously.

While I think graphics have substantially improved since the Order, games like Batman AK, DriveClub, AC Unity, Ryse and the Order deserve to be studied for what they got right. The rain effects in DriveClub havent been topped. Same goes for batman AK. The fantastic CG quality of The order's visual design is still missing in 99.9% of the games. Only Callisto and Hellblade have gotten there in the last almost 10 years now. SH2 comes close, but Indiana Jones is coming out in 2 months and its a linear game that doesnt feature that CG look.

Racing games cant get the rain effects right. Open world games cant either. Why? Just go back and see what these guys did on a 1.8 tflops gpu. you have 8x more raw gpu power, figure out these things that other more talented devs did in 2014 and 2015.
Exactly this.

Arkham Knight’s visual flair, art style, lighting, and excellent rain effects and physics are what help it to look as though it could’ve released a couple years ago. Rocksteady pushed the hell out of UE3, and it SHOWS.
Literally looks amazing

Like holy shit I can’t believe how good it still looks. Man it feels like last gen was the last time devs had any fucking AMBITION bro. Now they just slap a 60fps mode on a PS4 game, wipe their hands and call it a day

I remember reading game informer coverages in high school (sign of the times) and Batman, order, uncharted, whatever. All these PS4 only games you’d have the developers talking about this new tech and this huge scale they couldn’t do last gen and this simulation system gamers can look for when they buy it. Feels like that’s all gone now

I'm gonna disagree, re8 has a couple of places where it looked great but it was too hit and miss overall to be considered "amazing".

I save the word "amazing" for stuff like sh2 or wukong or avatar.
i should say it looked amazing at the time. newer games have topped it for sure.

re4 felt like a step back. monster hunter feels like ten steps back. re8 had all the latest tech just six months into the generation. coming off of DMC5 and Re8, RE engine had a bright future but they have underdelivered.

Horizon Zero Dawn and Dragon Age both come out today. I bet HZD will look better than Dragon Age lol

DF's console review also called the game visually impressive. Maybe it's one of those next gen games that dont showcase well on youtube, so im curious to see it running on my tv.

It's a shame that the discourse around the game is so focused on culture issues instead of gameplay and graphics. id rather people get this riled up for games looking last gen in 2024 lol

Yeah but not every zone was as good looking as the castle.

This is really not better looking than re4r

Something like demons remake maybe never reach the second pic quality (not even sure of this) but on average it always look much better than the first pic.

This is why i said hit and miss.

I know that most games are hit and miss, even wukong or avatar, but some are more noticeable than others, some places in re8 were ROUGH.

They are focused on writing that seems utter shit, like dustborn tier or worse, unless you completely ignored all the topics about it, it's vile woke propaganda that make look spiderman 2 like a propaganda game for trump, writing and companions are super important for a bioware rpg, it's not something you ignore just because you have flashy combat...

And the gameplay\enemy art design looks...terrible? What are you seeing in the combat that looks good? Special effects? No, great combos or coool weapons? No, great bosses? No the demons look cartoony or downright mobile tier.

A fucking rpg where you can't be an asshole with anyone and where an entire companion sidequest is about non-binary and pronouns stuff? Gtfo.

The game is being roasted, and for good reasons dude, reviewers really showed their asses with this one.
Nobody want modern california woke bullshits in a fantasy world with dragons, it's already distasteful in somethinng like sp2, but in a fantasy game is downright abominable.

You MUST have missed all the new discoveries about the writing of this game in the dedicated topic or i don't understand how you can even defend this turd.

I watched a lot of reviews. The story is the thing thats being praised the most. yes, its woke. I will make fun of that but tbh, i will be playing as a straight chick with long Fifa hair so i doubt i see a lot of trans stuff.

Almost everyone says the story is great. It's more epic than Mass Effect's suicide mission. It's far more linear and focused unlike Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition which is music to my ears. I play bioware games for choices not open world ubisoft collectathons. Combat is also being praised and being compared to GOW. Andromeda and Anthem despite their issues had exceptional combat systems. way better than 99.99% of the WRPGs out there.

if the writing is garbage, fine. But no one makes big budget story driven rpgs like bioware. what are my options? Starfield? xenoblade? elden ring? ff7 rebirth? fuck that. Even if the writing is spiderman 2 quality bad, it will still have things other devs just cant capture. spiderman 2 is the most woke game ever made and yet even on metacritic it has an 89 user score because despite everything woke, its still a great game.

baldurs gate 3 is probably the game its going to be compared against the most but thats a turn based game with terrible graphics and cutscenes i wouldnt touch with a ten foot poll.

yeah, it's uneven but the interiors had great lighting. And outdoor areas like the lake and the village under grey skies looked gorgeous. dawn lighting was bad, but even the factory had some stunning areas. re4 just felt drab and boring after you left the village area. i really didnt like the lighting in that game.

Sorry, i don't trust anything of what bloggers says when they completely ignore the modern california writing in a fantasy rpg and talk about return to form for bioware with a game that resemble old bioware games like elliot page resemble a real dude, i trust what i see with my eyes and all the clips i saw show terrible writing, terrible digital acting, lame ass combat and nothing to praise other than some nice art design in some locations and fifa hair tech.

Oh and btw, the sidemissions about non-binary\pronouns is the main quest of one of your companion, and they perform worse if you don't do their quest, and the game annoyingly remind you at every occasion to do the companions quest, they want you to interact with this crap.

And if you think for a single moment, that they didn't injected the woke shit in the overall writing of the game, you are a fool, this is WAY worse than sp2.

I will play the game and see for myself is all im saying. If its woke then so be it. I will criticize it after playing it. Too many people are ignoring 90% of the reviews and choosing the select few to pass on this game. And thats ok. I just know ive gone almost 7 years since i played an RPG like this and Andromeda was also cancelled by the internet hate mob, but i ended up enjoying it very much.

Listen, i get your point of view, some people call ragnarock super woke but i don't think it is, sometimes the anti-wokes exagerate a bit, but i know what i saw with this game and it's hard to ignore, and i was about to try the game anyway because i love open world action rpg, i even kinda enjoyed andromeda when i understood that it was a shit mass effect game but a decent open world action game, but here is different, this game make andromeda look like the godfather...

And let me tell you why people are focusing on just 2 reviews because they are only one who make actual examples of what they say...they say something is bad and they show 2-3 examples, hard to ignore such reviews when they show straight facts, hard to manipulate or lie when you actually show what are you talking about, i don't even fully trust them but i also saw external materials that confirm what they say.

Show me a review when they say that the game is a return to form to bioware and then they actually show some brilliant dialogue, some brilliant character, freedom of what to say or what make bioware games great, they really cant dude, because the writing is childish, you can only be a goody 2 shoes and there is a fucking scene where an ugly bitch make 10 push ups as punishment because he calls another ugly bitch with the wrong pronoun and saying sorry wasn't enough, i shit you not, this is the level of the writing of the game.

But i don't wanna fight over this, you are free to buy what you want, hell during a slow month i could even spend a tenner to try the game to see if there is something salvageable or to just laugh at it for how shit it is (although i don't usually hate buy).

This eurogamer review makes a lot of references to mass effect which is my favorite series of all time.

Apparently every act finishes with a suicide mission style mission full of epic setpieces and crucial choices which is exactly what I want from Bioware. Combat is also praised here.

The dialogue is shit, graphics look terrible, and I no longer agree with reviewers like I used to, but I am willing to spend $15 to give it a shot. probably wouldnt have spent $70 for it.

If you are only paying for a month of ea subscription then go ahead, i thought you were paying full price :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

That was my original plan on how to play the game, too risky to pay full price but right now even 15 euros seems a bit steep :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Horizon Zero Dawn is an ok-ish remaster. The hero lighting on aloy, foliage density and draw distance of said foliage, and the NPC character models in general are the biggest upgrades. Merdian finally looks good but still fairly last gen. I dont know why it has to be orange. Makes no sense. The draw distance is the same which means a lot of fog and low LOD objects in the distance. Water is a high point but it doesnt look good from a distance either.

It can be very impressive when you are in foliage rich areas, but other than that? Eh. They really needed to upgrade their rock textures. Lots of shadow pop-in when riding mounts so still havent upgraded their texture and lod streaming from HFW.

I think HFW's layout is far more impressive. This feels fairly last gen in terms of world layout. Maybe its the draw distance but it doesnt feel big in scope like HFW does.

5/10 on next gen scale, but not bad for a $9 upgrade. Next up is Dragon Age.

Making good rain requires more talent than compute.
And it seems that a lot of talent has left many studios.
It looks like Assetto Corsa Evo will finally top Driveclub for rain effects in the car. Although Sol mod has existed for many years for the original Assetto Corsa, that rain looks real, and still has not been topped by any dev.

Dragon Age looks like garbage. I had such high hopes for this game.

Big talent drain from Bioware. Anthem was absolutely gorgeous even after the downgrade.

Frostbite was one of the best engines last gen with Battlefront, NFS 2015, BF1, and Anthem all up there with the best looking games in their genre. Just another case of an engine that simply cant compete with ue5 even after 4 years.

Anthem was fuckin beautiful. If only they put that weight behind a proper ironman game or something. I loved it. A little bit of me died when it went tits up. 😥

MS is both super CPU heavy (camp) and GPU heavy. Looks like days of good RE engine performance are gone (at least in open world games).

In the meantime game looks like mid PS4 title so...

Baulders Gate 3 has by far the best graphics in a crpg

Anthem’s truly standout moments where when you were out and about in the jungle and swamp areas, but the settlements and interior spaces were both pretty lackluster to me. Had the game looked much closer to that insane looking, yet smoke and mirrors E3 slice, it would’ve been something truly special in the graphics space.

There is something about Dragon Age's visual design that i hope other games copy. it's not just the hair either. Their dialogue and cutscenes have this really great pre-rendered look that i havent seen from other games. Maybe FF16. it feels like a Pixar movie.

The rest of the game is fairly basic. Maybe GOW ragnorak quality. Perhaps even worse. the rocks, the textures, the lighting. everything feels so basic, but at times when the lighting looks just right, it can look very pleasing. not next gen, just very different from other games.

I would agree for the most part. Overall the game is decent looking but not exceptional. But there’s scenes and technologies that really shine in spots, and I do think the art-direction does the game a lot of favors as well. It has a soft, dreamy vibe to it that lends to the fantasy setting.

The anti-aliasing is great too; not a shimmer in sight for me (4k/DLAA).

Ok finally someone else here mentioned this. Everyone else keeps saying the game looks bad overall but the cutscenes and photo mode shots look insane to me and comes closer to that dream of real time games looking like CGI.
