Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

You actually managed to get even more insufferable and immature than before, congrats.

I don`t feel the need to repeat the very same discussion slimy already had with you. It´s like playing chess with a pigeon with you, at the end it doesn´t matter how it goes, you`ll just shit on the board.
Embarrassing, as expected.

You are yourself manifesting your intellectual capabilities the moment you say:

just you making impossible claims
Your argumentation is literally on "the sky is green, because I say so" level

When all I've done is posting facts, and (unique) heavy technical elements in the game adding up to rendering ms, and only gotten in response from your fraudulent guru infinite variations of "I don't care about none of this stuff, I don't give a shit about subsurface scattering, about dynamic GI, about capsule AO, about Percentage Closer Soft Shadows, about volumetric shadows, etc. etc. etc."

You are not even worthy of an answer honestly.

But Vick Vick and SlimySnake SlimySnake I was told just a page or two ago that TLOU Part 1 counts as an A-team Naughty Dog release, as they apparently weren’t working on anything else for years and this game got all of the attention and manpower.

trying-not-to-laugh-zoom-in.gif

They had 4 years (or more) and all the power of the PS5 (this wasn't even cross gen) to show off, and they did Part 2 level of graphics but with better textures...

I think when it comes to cutscene direction, Rockstar is going to blow us all away. They have been slowly but continuously improving since GTA4 and RDR1 which felt amaterish next to kojima and ND games. Max Payne 3 was a huge leap over those two games. GTA5 had some really decent cutscenes and acting, RDR2 was even better. And while the character animations were still a bit wooden, the cinematography and cutscene direction was among the best last gen.

This time around it seems like they have vastly improved their facial capture, motion capture, cutscene lighting, and the character models look absolutely stunning.

?

The game was done in one year..
And large portions of it by another studio before ND took over. We don't even know the extent of their meddling on that pre-made work.

True, but was already explained why both from an artistic, consistency-driven (if you believe their words), point of view and technical, even if on the technical side we had double the framerate and some good additions like PCSS, improved water physics, much higher resolution cube maps, and flashlight producing caustics (none of which are light, and especially PCSS extremely heavy).

We'll see what they'll do with their next game before saying they're frauds or not worthy anymore, as it should be the point.

I don't know why I thought for a second that remake was 2024 game, lol. I calculated 2020 (part 2) to 2024 so it was very wrong. They had 2 years and few months between releases.

Still, they could leave 60fps as is (quite good for 60fps game - with 1440p native res) and add RT for 30fps instead of native 4k. Far better usage of technology and it would modernize their engine and make game look more like next gen title.

Demon Souls is also 1440p 60 fps without RT and takes a big giant shit all over TLOU1. Ratchet too, and it has RT reflections in its performance mode which runs at a dynamic 1440p 60 fps.

ND didnt even bother updating assets, lighting, art design, cinematography that made DS such a graphics juggernaut, they did nothing. Wait sorry, they did update capsule AO and volumizing shampoo shadows, and hoop dee doo percentage shadows.

Yeah, DeS is at least one level above and that's only using raster. They were remastering PS3 games for ND and now they are among top devs when it comes to graphics.

Is BluePoint doing something at the moment? They have really great engine and talent and it would be a waste if they are not making some big game right now.

Yep. They both remade PS3 games and BP bitch slapped ND at their own game. Crazy. And they also did it in just 2.5 years.

They are supposedly working on a new game thats not a remake. It must be in development hell because its been 4 years and we havent even seen a single screenshot let alone an announcement. To make matters worse, Sony listed BP as a support studio in a recent slide. it's possible whatever they were working on was cancelled and they are now a support studio for ND, SSM and other studios. it shouldnt take 4 years for such a productive studio to release a trailer, even for a non-remake game. Wouldnt be surprised if Herman has mismanaged another studio.

As I said a hundred pages ago and as was mentioned by some here , the only reason and plausible explanation for the lackluster upgrades of the remake was a cheap attempt to achieve parity and continuity between part one and two for the new audience who have become familiar with the games through the tv series and obviously for more profit. This would give Sony the much needed recovery time postcovid , and especially after its early internal decisions regarding its GAAS policies/Uturn

Also this would allow ND to fill the gap in their releases while buying more time and earning more funds to come up with techs and upgrades that could compete with UE5 and put them back into contention for the best visuals and more effectively surprise the fans with their next game's graphics

Here we go. Another victim of 60 fps. Indiana Jones looks so bad because even the Series S target was 60 fps.

"It might be that we will release even more details in terms of specifics, technical details, as we get closer to launch, once we see all the telemetry on performance. But what I can tell you is that the ambition is that the game runs at 60 FPS on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and that, you know, it shouldn't be compromised in the visuals or the experience of the product. It should feel cohesive, running smoothly at 60 on both."
I am sorry but why? I get that a FPS needs to target 60 fps, but why the fucking series s? Its 4 tflops. That means you are giving yourself a 2 tflops budget to render graphics while the rest goes into just running it at twice the framerate. That essentially makes it a PS4 game.

This is proof of devs making a series of bad decisions one after another. Indiana Jones shouldve never been a first person game. If it was a third person game, they wouldve gotten away with making it 30 fps. But nope, first person feels choppy in 30 fps so now they were forced to make a 60 fps game that looks dated as fuck.

It's a shame that so many of these bethesda studios worked on their own engines. Deathloop looked like crap, Redfall too. And now this. Meanwhile Starfield had amazing lighting and asset quality, but the game world was mostly procedurally generated so it looked ugly at times. Just imagine if Machine Games use this engine.

Appreciable improvement from previous showings, at times at least.
Can't find any confirmation it runs on id Tech 7; doesn't look its using Megatextures and there shouldn't be any valid reason for them to go with 6, but recorded gameplay is from a 4090 and by the looks of it it doesn't appear the RT reflections we should expect from id Tech 7 are present.
Overall, a little bit better than what I'd expect from a MachineGames output, certainly from a Series S 60fps one.

Lovely skin shaders, competent use of "SuBSURfaCE SCaTTerRING".

Another awful review by Digital Foundry. Alex spends the entire review talking about how this is a competent PC port with decent settings menus and better RT settings than on console. yay? is that where the bar is now for AAA games? just give us good performance on dated CPUs and 8GB GPUs? Instead of actually you know discussing the graphics fidelity in a tech review?

There is no typical console version tech review from John. Maybe it comes later, but this is their first video on the game and they couldnt care less about how dated and ugly this game looks.

That's why I deeply prefer the videos that John Linneman makes. It goes much more in-depth. I don't see much of a reason for a PC-focused video, as its discussion should be embedded into a "performance video" with Xbox and PS5 too.

Layoff ChatGPT and use your own words:messenger_angry:
But that's an utterly perfect description.
There would be no better way to synthesize the diatribe that took place between someone whose head has been on the verge of exploding from covid for three long days, who used DF John's Retro series and the hour long Part I as relaxing source of relief, and another person violently trashing that video and its author along with the game's developers, author who always worked his ass off to deliver that kind of quality content, and devs still being the only ones providing, even in quick and joint development jobs one year only in the making, what's to the recovering 60fps enthusiast the most satisfying complete package.

I don't see much of a reason for a PC-focused video, as its discussion should be embedded into a "performance video" with Xbox and PS5 too.
Of course there would be a reason for PC-focused videos. They just shouldn't be limited to praising questionable work simply due to the improvement it offers over unoptimized console versions.

Alex has done those videos for Alan Wake and Avatar, but those were games he liked. Any game that is subpar, they just gloss over and simply discuss their framerate and resolutions. Umm no, you should be reviewing a game's fidelity in a tech review instead of simply providing framerate benchmarks. That includes comparing it to its contemporaries and pointing out just how fucking dated it looks.

Not sure why this $70 game shouldnt be compared to other $70 games like Avatar, Horizon FW, and Black Myth. the lighting, world level of detail, foliage quality is all trash compared to even last gen games like HFW. This is precisely why devs think they can get away with producing last gen graphics in 2024. The one graphics outlet that could critique them chickens out or in john's case slobbers all over their mediocre efforts.

well, to be fair these devs have always been a gen behind. likely due to their psp origins. i thought monster hunter on ps4 looked like dogshit but it was still a massive success. people dont play these games for graphics.

RE9 is open world and made by the A team over there so let's hope it's a stunner. at least the RE Engine team is making attempts to modernize the engine. the devs over at Capcom sadly just dont have the same talent across the board.

Interesting to note devs with PSP origins, ironically, historically produced the most technically advanced and beautiful looking games.

Ready at Dawn single-handedly pioneered PBR in the previous gen, helping tremendously with their findings and shared knowledge every dev at the time:

Literally in a league of their own, even though already showed their prowess when they humbled Santa Monica by releasing on PS3 their GoW collection at 1080p 60fps, versus the 720p 60fps one from SSM.

Another example Bend Studio, who pioneered screen space shadows and introduced them to Unreal Engine 4:

LDS79Eu.jpg

Along with many other optimizations some now part of UE5, all in one massive open world PS4 game even that dude VFX Veteran described in May 2021 as the "best looking game on PC".

Monster Hunters are likely more the result of MT Framework Lite/Mobile past.

I wouldn't even say "mobile past", looking at how insanely impressive some of these new Asian games from devs with Mobile backgrounds are.
It appears cutting your teeth on weak hardware, forcing you to master optimization and artistry, usually translates into shitting on everyone else once given proper tools.

Wilds is way, WAY worse than we expected, in some moments it looks legit worse than world, probably the worst texture work i saw in a AAA during this entire gen.

It make look a turd like dogma2 like a ps7 game.

And this is why i never overpraise japanese devs like most gaffers do, sorry not sorry.

Oh and lol at thinking that bioware is gonna deliver with the next mass effect after failguard...

World always looked like a bad-mid ps4 game not a ps3 game.

Wilds straight up look like a bad ps4 game on ps5.

Wilds somehow has downgraded characters even compared to dmc5 because i swear that dante and nico looked better than any character in wilds.

Can’t stand the art style of dragons age, but the hair looks incredible in the videos. The way it’s lit and how it moves. I wish more games did that

Agreed. Whenever I end up giving it a try, I'll make sure to have the longest possible hair just to see it moving. I love it.

I heard someone saying that the project probably already started a while ago so they are just continue put money on it for a sinking cost fallacy...

I should have phrased better. We know ME is in development but the question is, will it see the light of day after another flop? My guess is that it will depend on the level of Veilguard's flop. If it's a total disaster I think there's a possibility EA pulls the plug on it.

I’ve given up on BioWare. They’re like one of those legacy bands that only has one original member left. Everything I’ve seen from Veilguard makes it look like a cheap imitation of their older games. All of the talent behind said games is long gone, and it shows. Seems to be a running trend in the industry.

Jason did an article today about this. A lot of the devs left these bigger studios because they got tired of working on massive 100 hour games with thousands of developers and have gone back to start their own companies with fewer developers. Or simply just make games by themselves.

The talent drain is real. But there is hope because those devs are still in the industry, and are sticking with 80-100 man teams for their new studios and they believe having fewer devs will allow them to take more risks.

I would say Naughty Dog is a joke, but that's letting the rest of the video game industry off and I can't let that slide.
It's fascinating to see the many different ways that the industry has come to ruin.

DMC5 had excellent character models...the news that MH Wilds looks like ass is so disappointing though. The first game was impressive for when it came out. Wasn't top tier but looked real nice on ps4 pro. Something must have really gone wrong with Wilds. Sounds like PS5 Pro wont be able to save it either.
