Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Borderlands' art style, while controversial, was in my view the right choice. Cel-shading ages gracefully, I can still play the first one, which is 16 years old, and enjoy some of the vistas it has to offer.

I don't think a 5080 should need DLSS performance on any game unless it does something insane like path tracing. We're talking about a 1000 eurodollar GPU.
depends on the settings. This game is letting users select a lot more settings than you typically see on UE5 games. If you want console settings, you can easily do 4k dlss quality.

The foliage setting alone literally doubles the draw distance compared to consoles. There are several different settings for volumetrics, reflections and geometry. You almost never see that in UE5 games which typically hide these settings behind generic UE5 presets. So if these settings are 2-3x more expensive compared to console settings then of course you wont be able to run at dlss quality AND improve all these settings on a 2.4-3x more powerful GPU like the 5080.

Point is that they are letting PC gamers push these settings in order to future proof the game like RDR2 did at launch, and are being crucified for it.

Lastly, Cyberpunk Path tracing was designed and implemented by nvidia which is why it scales gracefully on the 5080 and other nvidia cards and makes it perform 5x better than the ps5 and other cards of that era. Otherwise, the 5080 is roughly in line with AMD GPUs in ray tracing games like avatar, ac shadows, and outlaws.

Didnt RAGE come out at the same time? I liked its look more. cant find any non-bullshots for it so i will download and try it out today.

RAGE was another game unfairly criticized at launch for its visuals even though it ran great for me.

Foliage draw and density seems to be the biggest difference between console Quality and Performance mode.

Pure speculation but my theory is that Sucker Punch got hung up making some GAAS bullshit, had to cancel, and pivoted fast and hard to Yotei. Have they even vaguely alluded to any tech improvements? Same assets, same animations, same everything. Even the other Sony sequels this gen were more ambitious than this.

Spiderman 2 had a pretty decent uplift without using RTGI. HFW as well. This is just laziness just like GOW Ragnorak, Astrobot, and DS2.

Alan Wake 2, FF16, and Space Marine 2 dont use any ray tracing either. That is not a requirement to make games look next gen. You can push baked lighting as long as you mix it in with high quality assets, expensive volumetric effects, and foliage. These guys didnt even try.

Watch John from DF give it a 50 minute tribute like he did with TLOU1 and DS2 while twitter praises it for running at 1440p 60 fps and not improving graphics.

Even with these photos, they still look much more better and cohesive than Yotei. All AAA or first party games should use RT techniques to some degree. Or at least give solid bake lighting presentation.

Apparently "5 years gap, DLC looking and feeling first party game" classification doesn't fit in this group.

RAGE was Carmack pet project, and the game supposed to usher the era of megatextures if i rmember correctly.

It was really beautiful when it came out and pushed a lot of new features, but then again it was carmack project through and through so of course the tech was mindblowing.

Tbh i never finished the game but it wasn't bad. Shooting felt good as with any ID-tech game.
Gfx were good at the time but the texture pop-in when turning the camera fast was horrendous. Also from afar it looked great but the closer you got the more obvious the low res textures became.
Played Wolfenstein Old Blood (same engine) a while ago and had to google how to fix the texture pop-in.
Turned out you have to create a certain folder in the game directory so the engine creates a texture cache or something, that mostly fixed it.

I played the first 20 minutes of RAGE, and it still looks impressive as long as you don't get too close to anything. Up close the illusion breaks, the textures are simply terrible by modern standards. And it plays like hot garbage, the controls are extremely floaty.

the level of detail in this game (and in doom) is really last gen. and im not talking about the water. jus thte ground level detail and overall detail in levels. Of course path tracing brings out the detail on some of these objects, but clearly not everywhere. this is why i was really pissed at them giving it graphics goty over hellblade 2.

My hate for it's Graphics comes from expectations for developers who was one of my favorite developers last gen, then they give you this bullshit after more than 5 years of development and can't even reach the graphics quality of some cross gen titles like hfw or even that E3 2018 tsushima trailer

I think people were just too spoiled back then with a lot more choices. You had an amazing Bioshock game. Half Life 2 Orange box in 2007. Halo 3 and Reach had Bungie firing on all cylinders. CoD and Battlefield were putting out bangers year after year. PS gamers had Resistance, KZ2. Far Cry 3 was amazing. You had original shit like Bulletstorm and Borderlands. Next to them, Rage might have felt like a mid game. I thought the graphics were incredible and the main reason why i still remember the game. shooting was competent, but i enjoyed bulletstorm, far cry 3, borderlands, and other shooters a whole lot more.

If it came out today in an era where Halo is dead, CoD is trash, Sony shooters are MIA, Avatar and Doom turned out to be mid, and borderlands still doing the same shit it was doing in 2009 then maybe it would stand out a bit more.

I wonder if we will ever go back to that ps360 era where devs were not afraid of taking risks. everything feels so samey nowadays.

The actual shooting was as good or better than fc3, borderlands or bulletstorm tbh and unless my memory is fucked, graphically i don't think it was inferior to 3\4 of your list but i could be wrong, i played the game at launch so it has been a while.

It was basic ass shooting compared to bulletstorm or bioshock or fc3 that had way more tools and variety but it felt great hitting people, i clearly remember people still posting the hit reaction gifs of rage sometimes here on gaf.

Btw, yotei must be the first sony open world where i'm not even interested in watching the trailers, i don't even know why i preordered this thing other than getting rid of ds2 and get a discount on something...

That nighttime lighting is so bad. Compare this to the TLOU II forest sequence and it's actually a joke. I hate when games are lit like this. It's like they just slap that nasty blue filter on and call it a day. Make it actually fucking dark.

I'd argue Ragnarok was a bigger jump.
i thought ragnorak looked virtually identical like ghosts.

they even said that they didnt bother utilizing the ps5 to improve graphics because they didnt want the ps4 gamers feeling left out. the game ended up selling like 90% of its copies on the ps5 anyway. a bunch of fucking idiots.
 
I tried. I really, really tried. Perhaps I could've forgiven the graphics. After all, we've yet to see this game running on PS5 Pro. But wtf is with the brain dead AI contextual animation? Look at the damn wolf! WTF!? And this isn't a one-off otherwise I wouldn't be so bothered... You see this sort of NPC behavior rampant in all of these promo videos Sony is releasing.
