Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

i thought ragnorak looked virtually identical like ghosts.

they even said that they didnt bother utilizing the ps5 to improve graphics because they didnt want the ps4 gamers feeling left out. the game ended up selling like 90% of its copies on the ps5 anyway. a bunch of fucking idiots.

I tried. I really, really tried. Perhaps I could've forgiven the graphics. After all, we've yet to see this game running on PS5 Pro. But wtf is with the brain dead AI contextual animation? Look at the damn wolf! WTF!? And this isn't a one-off otherwise I wouldn't be so bothered... You see this sort of NPC behavior rampant in all of these promo videos Sony is releasing.

We need a laziest developer of the generation award because this is as lazy as it gets. I feel ashamed for shitting on Insomniac because at least they upgraded the graphics a bit, used the ssd for faster flying and some cool setpieces, and had a fairly competent RT implementation.

Even kojima who was literally going blind upgraded character models, and made some next gen looking cutscenes at least.

This has to be the laziest ive seen a developer in decades. I love lists so here is one that will hopefully immortalized the laziest most garbage developers this gen.

1) Sucker Punch - Same animations, character models, lighting, foliage, copy pasta bullshit.
2) Nintendo's Mario Kart 8 team - looks identical to a Wii U game from 2014
3) Donkey Kong Bananza team - Looks identical to Mario Odyssey from 2017
4) MLB The Show Studio - zero upgrades after 5 $70 ps5 games
5) Square's FF7 Rebirth studio - RIP Lethal01
6) Polyphony Digital - 2d trees, no ray tracing during gameplay, etc.
7) Astro bot team - zero upgrades over a free pack-in
8) Team Ninja (Rise of Ronin, Nioh 3, etc)
9) Sony Santa Monica - The most DLC looking game of all time.
10) Treyarch and other CoD Studios. 5 years. 5 CoD games. Zero upgrades.
 
As a cross-gen early PS5 game that SSM developers even admitted was PS4 at heart, overall Ragnarok on PS5 was beautiful. There is no comparison whatsoever to Yotei. Yeah, Vanaheim at night could and did get pretty ugly, but there are plenty of excellent visuals to be enjoyed in that game.

Lighting in snow levels looked good by last gen standards. And some cutscenes. Dont remember praising a mountain level, but it might be that level where Loki climbs the cliffs to Asgard. Some great textures there. Last gen, but great. Game looked virtually identical on the PS4 which just pisses me off more than anything. Well, maybe not as much as the director choosing not to include the mjolnir as a playable weapon to subvert expectations. hope that guy was fired.

as will be the case with this game. we've already seen it looks beautiful in those orange fields with direct sunlight. but we also know that the 90% of the game takes place under dark skies since they idiotically decided to add dark skies if you get into a lot of combat.

The hammer would have played too similar to the axe, think about it, the axe was kratos's hammer.

We got the lance that was a great weapon instead, i wasn't mad at all.

thor being a drunk with family problems that die like a moron was more of a letdown to me.

well, it's their job to make it different. it's a brand new game that took over 4.5 years to make. if the game was next gen only, maybe we couldve used the axe to fly around instead of fighting arena battles like a ps2 game.

also, the whole subverting expectations argument is just retarded and pisses me off more than anything else.

That nighttime lighting is so bad. Compare this to the TLOU II forest sequence and it's actually a joke. I hate when games are lit like this. It's like they just slap that nasty blue filter on and call it a day. Make it actually fucking dark.

And it still looks better than its daytime representation. Which means the graphics are total shit.

Ghost of Yotei is a yee yee ass looking game, you know it's bad when even ChiefDada is struggling to defend it with all due respect to ChiefDada.


I said in another thread that I believe the game was built around 30fps because that is the only time it ever looked like it could be current gen. Even the resolution looks very low with so many artifacts i don't know why that would be because it isn't pushing any significant tech based on what I'm seeing.

It's possible that it started out as a cross-gen development but than later shifted towards PS5 exclusivity, I don't know what the rational would be for that but it's the only explanation I can think of.
 
Even with these photos, they still look much more better and cohesive than Yotei. All AAA or first party games should use RT techniques to some degree. Or at least give solid bake lighting presentation.
Yeah GoY only being dethroned by Forspoken and that Final Fantasy game I think lollllllllllllll
but when it shines, it really shines.
But graphically speaking that's mostly coming from nvidia's effort. Honestly that's my main issues with games like this ,when dev just relies on big boys way too much too often, throw away most of stuff in whatever state and call it a day . Of course we can say image quality wise it's good enough for consoles ,but the game itself without green team stepped in left a lot to be desired, heck the reason why even Path Tracing can't hide these noticeable shortcomings. Well , comparing to most of Sony's low effort console ports on pc and other totally unoptimized mess they still got plenty sanity I guess
the level of detail in this game (and in doom) is really last gen. and im not talking about the water. jus thte ground level detail and overall detail in levels. Of course path tracing brings out the detail on some of these objects, but clearly not everywhere. this is why i was really pissed at them giving it graphics goty over hellblade 2.
Alex B will give anything a free pass whenever Daddy Jensen are tracing the light around the corner!

Year 2: Covid Mental Health Recovery Year.
Year 3: Sudden Realization they have no real talent to add Ray tracing or Mesh Shader Support.
Year 4: Sony calls to shut down studio. They counter by manufacturing their own lesbian lead. Jin gets killed off screen, but Sony's satisfied. Game development begins.
Year 5: Let's get to work. Shit. Only 1 year left. DLC it is. Let's hire SunhiLegend from GG to make it look next gen. Sunhi fails miserably. Falls into Depression. Quits Sony and joins a real developer like Ubisoft Massive. 50 years later writes a tell all exposing Sucker Punch as lazy buffoons who took hundreds of millions from Sony and wasted it on cocaine and hookers.

It makes no sense. I'm not a big Tsushima fan. I would say it's my least favorite from Sony franchises. But I would argue it was the most anticipated sequel from PS4 gen. Maybe 2nd only to God of War. And yet this is the low level development treatment it's being subjected to? I should've known there was a problem when the lead dev said THE DUALSENSE was the biggest generational difference in developing for PS4 vs PS5. I really like the dualsense but c'mon!

Dont be too hard on yourself. Reveal trailer was likely faked. I distinctly remember praising the night time lighting, complete darkness, which is all gone replaced with a blue filter. They also used the best looking areas in the best lighting conditions with carefully crafted cutscenes masked as gameplay.

Kojima did something similar. Showed cutscenes almost exclusively. or with fake gameplay angles that hid all the issues with the draw distance.

Like in the water gif below. The time of day and haze in the distance masks the poor draw distance and LODs. The desert gif has a cinematic camera angle and again uses haze to mask the draw distance. I have 180 hours in the game, and never got it to look like that. The last gif with the fantastic rain effects is clearly doctored. Rain does not look that good in the game.

How do you allow a 3rd party developer to outclass you by such a large margin in showcasing the benefits of your own hardware?

Sony devs are allergic to RT.

Only Insomniac and (to some extend) PD embraced it. They now have the chance to catch up with PS5 Pro having much better RT performance but there are no games in sight, lol.
Compare this to Capcom using RT extensively in Pragmata and RE9.

Capcom was forward thinking. They had RT at launch on DMC. It was bad, cut performance in half, and everyone was like why. Then they launched Village with an early version of RTGI and again, people were like it is not a huge difference and turned it off. But then the RTGI really took a big leap with Dragons Dogma 2 which was genuinely impressive at times. Now almost 5 years after they started experimenting with RT, we are finally seeing them go all out with it and its glorious in both games you mentioned above.

Crazy that a Japanese publisher was more fowarding thinking than the entirety of Sony worldwide studios. Sans insomniac of course.

Honestly I owe insomniac an apology for shitting on sm2 - they did a lot more than most Sony studios it seems. And they released two games this generation. Ratchet is still one of the better looking games on these consoles somehow

They're not "allergic". They target PS h/w first while aiming at a locked 60 with what can be considered current gen resolution. This limits them in how they can use PS5's shit RT h/w to a significant degree.
3rd parties aren't targeting only PS h/w and they generally aren't as hell bent on getting to locked 60 with at least 1440p pre-FSR. So they have more options to experiment with RT, even if such experiments end up being PC/PS5Pro exclusive in the end.
 
This gen started so well and I was hopeful for whats to come, Demons Souls, Rift Apart. 5 years later disappointed about Sony's complacency. Happy though that other studios are pushing visuals.
 
The Order 1886-tier of cinematic feel and quality makes this game a gem in my eyes, damn I'm so excited. Although it's still in production, the lighting and environment physiques already look top class. I hope nothing bad happens and we can experience it.

Most of the games they are doing look like cross gen games that could be easily ported to PS4. There is no ambition on display.
Even looking at DeS remake that don't use any RT - this game still looks very good and beyond what PS4 could handle, same is true for R&C and this game has very good use of RT. Sony studios became lazy after 2020, probably only SM2 count as decent gen to gen uplift.

When it comes to resolutions, Forbidden West launched with dogshit 1800p CB resolution, they made results much better after few months but it's still below 1440p in pure pixels. DS2 looks not that much better than DS1 and we go down from native 2160p (with drops within VRR window to ~50fps) to 1440p (that is quite soft). Returnal has abysmal resolution on base PS5 (1080p), GOWR is literally PS4 game in 1440p+

Silent Hill f seems to be a very good version on both PC and PS5, DF got hands on at Gamescom.

Expecting Xbox to be more or less the same as PS5. It's a game with small, narrow halls and the fog obscures a lot the draw distance, so there's really nothing that should be stressing out hardware.
This was the same for Silent hill 2 remake and the game was heavy as fack XD
 
They can't handle bring good visuals on real time so they start using cgi trailers lol,

When I think of the best looking game I've played this generation, considering both visual fidelity and art direction, I have a hard time not thinking Rebirth or Sifu.

Horizon is obviously among the best in terms of technical fidelity but I think it's just so unbelievably ugly.
