Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Really like how Jusant looks and it's proof that we can have a game that has a stylized, artistic look and not be a trainwreck on the tech part.

I think it uses software lumen and also shows how important lighting is, the game has almost no textures and looks really good.




I really need to get back on this one. Lools like a better looking Zelda.
 
It was to be expected really. HFW's performance mode targets 1296p or 1800cb. DS2 targets 1440p. They are using less of the PS5 GPU than a cross gen game like HFW. What bothers me is how poor the water looks in Pro's perfromance mode. Just shimmers everywhere despite the increase in raw pixels. If it's equivalent to HFW's water, i cant tell.

HFW also has a vastly better art style. way better foliage too. DS2 probably beats it out in ground level detail, and character models. Though i really dont like how bad Elli Fanning looks in this. her nose is all fucked up, and her skin shaders are last gen compared to Rainy and Fragile. The hair looks last gen too. Not sure what happened here because everyone else looks phenomenal.

You would think kojipro and GG engineers wouldve spent the last 6 years working on adding some hair physics. The capcom devs did.

I still think fifa2022 cavani is the most realistic looking hairs ever, it just fools you into believing that all the hairs have physics even if it is just a visual trick, you can't find better hairs than this gif, you can probably fool a lot of non-gamers that those are real hairs, i know i could with this specific gif even if the other players look worse.

I guess it depend if you use hair gel or you have greasy hairs that stick together more, then maybe the cavani gif can look a bit silly, but i prefer seeing all the hairs having physics instead of seeing block of hairs moving like they are glued together, likeyou said, we had block of hairs physics for a while, but people seems to appreciate the new stuff like veilguard or shadows that are more similar to silk effect fifa where every hair seems to move with physics (or at least they trick you into thinking that)

AMD and Cerny talk about what they are adding to the PS6.

TLDR; they will be using AI to push graphics boundaries. lol Good luck. Their own devs wont even use mesh shaders or Ray traced hardware, no one is going to utilize whatever AI hardware they put in there.

So AI upscaling like FSR4 and DLSS, and also AI to enhance modern graphics pipelines. Unless this thing automatically plugs into the graphics APIs and runs everything twice as fast, i dont see anyone utilizing it.

Literally no one gave two shits about Cerny's IO design paradigm. Everyone just used it for loading LOL.

Yep. I was going through my gifs yesterday and honestly, DS1 looks better. It's far more cohesive because there is no day night cycle and devs were able to make every area look perfect. Not the case here. Game can look rough in most lighting conditions.

This scene here was very impressive to me even when I played it on PC years later, and I remember that it ran pretty well as well.

That's why what Unreal works towards is so important in day/night cycle games or just RTGI in general and I'm just baffled people don't see the clear differences and focus just on the negatives that UE has.

The super fast SSD was the biggest hoax of this generation.
 
OK, after my highlighting of DS2s graphical shortcomings, there is one aspect that is definitely superior to the prequel: the alpine mountain area (just got there).
Don't know how scripted it was, but I almost got hit by a small avalanche on my randomly chosen path to the first settlement there. Was pretty cool. The snow deformation and storm system also look better. Behold:

I was an RTGI denier until Avatar came out. I even liked it in Dragons Dogma 2 which had its own issues, but it just looked right at any time of day. The AO coverage that RTGI provides to everything in the level is so important in grounding everything. I am sure you can fake it with enough dev time, but any time you add time of day changes, it increases the dev time even more and you end up seeing these half baked (literally lol) visuals.
 
Getting deeper into australia and its clear that decima engine needs a big upgrade. The trees seem to have no shadows in the distance, the rocks have this ps3 look to them. They look like cartoon rocks. The lighting looks worse than HFW. Only thing better here is the draw distance but you can tell that as they improve the distance, the assets elsewhere and level of detail takes a hit. Something GG must have been aware of, since they added fog everywhere.

I can't agree at all. Even with some tech being absent here, It's clearly one of best looking games out there currently.
ps3 rocks my ass.
you focus on few places game looks flat and is not pushing the tech you want to see and ignore all the other amazing details and achievements it presents.

The environments in gameplay are amongst best looking out there.

To each their own, but I'm sorry, in a world where we have Hellblade 2 and TLOU2, DS2 characters are not the best, not with that bird nest that Fragile has on her head.

Exactly, in a static non-open world they can fake it, but even that has a limit. If the games get bigger and bigger and they start throwing more complex geometry, assets, more interactivity, physics it's clear baking it or half measures can't cut it anymore.

The thing is that truck looks fantastic under the right lighting conditions. You can tell the materials are really high quality, and have the kind of metallic sheen. The low quality lighting model outdoors just doesnt provide enough lighting data for the materials to shine.

What? These characters are real time. Of you are dressed differently, it shows in a cutscene. You can move the camera around in the instant camera mode too.

I don't understand this complaint. Where would you want these character to be visible in game? You wouldn't see the. So close. When you talk to characters in every game, it's essentially a cutscene and model swap. The one character you always see, Sam looks great from the back where you always look at him.

Just did the mission that takes you to that room in your last screenshot. It looks really good. Great indirect lighting and some very decent asset quality.

Sadly it's a tiny facility with like 3 rooms. You don't seem to understand that the game is literally 95% open world. The what matters. Cutscenes and these other small areas are too rare. They should've focused on improving the graphics of the open world since you will literally spend 80 hours there. And honestly it can't ever look like this.

Again with your 1 screenshot. Game uses that lighting throughout whole game. It's probes that sometimes work better and sometimes not.
I am very impressed with the game and it is where I stand on it. Both with open world part and cutscenes too.

You can't really compare the two games. Horizon looks great but also looks purposely very cartoonish. DS2 is shooting for realism in comparison, and while I don't think it quite nails it, I think some of the overall lighting particularly in the day/night cycle transitions feels like an improvement over HFW.

If the cutscene models were used in-game, that would be impressive. They don't though, so that's why he's saying it doesn't count. Cutscenes =/= gameplay and we're talking about games here, not real time rendered movies.

Reminds me of the difference between Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, the first game was incredibly polished visually and the lighting was great, especially the ambient occlusion.

It seems Rebirth didn't receive that kind of polish, and in the open world the environments looked incredibly flat. The game would have benefited a lot from some form of RT AO and RT GI.

I think it's also the location, for now mexico and australia are not as striking as ds1 location, they are probably the most generic dull ass locations i have played in an open world since maybe the far cry games.

Thats a very good comparison, but in Rebirth the first two open worlds looked pretty decent, it was the interiors that looked PS3 quality. Like zero work went into lighting them. The desert and forest open worlds also have some of the worst graphics ive ever seen this gen. It's clear that they kind of gave up after the first two open worlds. I am seeing something very similar here. The deeper i go into Australia the worst it looks.

That said, the engine clearly has some high points. I mentioned the warehouse. The lighting there is immaculate. The flashback fireworks sequence looks flashy when fireworks are on, but the way the interiors are lit in that level is also very pleasant. Literally the opposite of Rebirth where interiors looked like shit. It almost makes it look like they are using some kind of realtime GI solution in these interiors.

I think it's also the location, for now mexico and australia are not as striking as ds1 location, they are probably the most generic dull ass locations i have played in an open world since maybe the far cry games.
It's odd that he chose to go with real life australia after he made a point to use Iceland's unique geography as the setting for the U.S. U.S is equally boring but he knew this back then. Wonder why he didnt do the same and just made up something for Australia and Mexico.

I cant tell you how many tweets and youtube comments I've read on tech channels like NX gamer and DF where all the comments are hailing this is as the best looking PS5 game. Not to mention the constant comparisons with UE5 and games with RTGI.

It's hard to say if this will have devs strip out RT and Lumen from their games going forward, but i can promise you that the industry is looking at this and wondering if RTGI, Lumen and Nanite are all worth it.

They already have to deal with their bosses who look at Fortnite, and last gen looking COD and ask why graphics are important. Now their bosses will point to Spiderman 2 and GOW Ragnraok, both of which sold 11 million in a few weeks. Or they will point to Astro Bot which won GOTY. And now DS2.

i think Rockstar and CD Project will do their own thing, but the rest of the industry might shift from making next gen looking games to last gen trash at 1440p 60 fps.

That purposely cartonish HFW looks l better than DS2 and that fact is enough when you aim for realism you must use tech that support it's like rtgi, virtual geometry and rt reflections,, not build your game with last gen tech like baked probe Gi lighting, parallax mapping and ssr

I think that a ton of these comments are coming from platform tribalism (Playstation fans) and celebrity worship (Kojima fans). If this was a third party title from Ubisoft or something very few would be including it in any "best graphics" discussions.


I do think that you're unfortunately right though in that we're going to see fewer and fewer games striving to push the bar forward in visuals. Too many people already think graphics are "good enough", AAA games are much more of a risk/investment nowadays, so many more big games are flopping, and then you see games like GAAS games and Nintendo titles selling like hotcakes and it's not hard to imagine a future where you only see a small handful of games per generation that prioritize high fidelity visuals.

It seems like an evolution of what was seen in the FFXIII trilogy (mainly Lightning Returns), but with a higher polygon count, which gave a realistic appearance.
There's a scene in LR where there's a strong wind and several female characters have their hair blowing in the wind. I thought it was impressive for the time.



Incidentally, Lightning Returns has the same problem you're talking about with Death Stranding 2. The characters are extremely well done, but the environments are very poor. The characters look almost like something from the PS4, but the environments look like something from the PS2.

To be fair, they'll have to push visuals eventually regardless. PS6 will have AI upscaling, might as well go all the way down to 720p to have the image quality of today and cut all optimizations.

I am not so sure. PS5 Pro has AI upscaling and kojipro didnt bother using it. Stuck with a flat 1440p target for both machines. Switch 2 has AI upscaling and they are also targeting 1440p 60 fps.

Lazy devs and unambitious hacks will only use this insane level of praise to justify putting in the bare minimum effort.

Lazy devs and unambitious hacks will only use this insane level of praise to justify putting in the bare minimum effort.
I imagine with a lead platform supporting it adoption should be better than the Pro, still... Yeah, fair thing to be concerned about.

Kojima should be congratulates for not wasting time of needless features that nobody can see and that cost unreasonable amounts of performance.
Nobody stops to look at a tiny rock very close. it's not a tech demo.
They knew where to pick their battles. Better gameplay, more story, more scenes and characters. Instead of pointless rt and nanite. They chose solutions fitting for this gameplay style.
If they couldn't do more, it's because ps5 is too weak to run with this image quality.
as is, game looks spotless.
The hyperbole about this game graphics are getting on my nerves. people like that ruin this industry. it looks good. And It can look good without having every retarded ue5 feature.
I've taken 250 screenshots for a reason but I wont post most because spoilers
Finally we have somethings new, unique that is not another ue5 and another cod.

This is forspoken all over again. Those open world screenshots dont look good my man. They wont look better the more you post them. They are hurting my eyes.

And yes, the game can look worse than DS1 at times. This was not an issue with HFW which looked like a massive leap over the original.

It looks worse than clair obscure and everyone praised it.

DS2 clearly looks better than ds1. How much better? ds1 already looked great. But compare it to 1080p 30fps version of it on ps4 and think for yourself.
HFW is just good looking game too.. because it's just good looking. There is no HFW vs DS2. they both look about as good

It was to be expected really. HFW's performance mode targets 1296p or 1800cb. DS2 targets 1440p. They are using less of the PS5 GPU than a cross gen game like HFW. What bothers me is how poor the water looks in Pro's perfromance mode. Just shimmers everywhere despite the increase in raw pixels. If it's equivalent to HFW's water, i cant tell.

HFW also has a vastly better art style. way better foliage too. DS2 probably beats it out in ground level detail, and character models. Though i really dont like how bad Elli Fanning looks in this. her nose is all fucked up, and her skin shaders are last gen compared to Rainy and Fragile. The hair looks last gen too. Not sure what happened here because everyone else looks phenomenal.

You would think kojipro and GG engineers wouldve spent the last 6 years working on adding some hair physics. The capcom devs did.

I literally posted gifs above after someone literally posted screenshots that show it looks worse. You seem to have some kind of issue not seeing it. Everyone else here does. I am not the problem here.

It doesn't look better in the gifs lol. It's just a different landscape.

I can understand the arguments how some rt tech etc could make it look EVEN better. but it's beautiful in current state.
