Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

So that means the first GoY trailer indeed had RT after all? Anyway, to me it doesn't change much, still a very mediocre game tech wise. Art is on point, as expected.
I called it last year -

It's definitely RTGI. The Green Arrows are the path of the direct lighting from the sun which then bounces off of the foliage (black arrows) back upwards onto the horse and main char

A summary of DF's video:
▪️Multiple graphics modes | Quality Mode: 4K/30FPS (PS5 Pro), ~4K/30FPS (PS5, slightly below 4K), Performance Mode: 1440p/60FPS (PS5 Pro), ~1080P/60FPS (PS5), Ray-Tracing Mode: 1728P/30FPS (PS5 Pro), 1440/30FPS (PS5)
▪️PS5 Pro can play RT mode at 60FPS (1080p with PSSR)
▪️PSSR: "Really good" image quality overall, mostly on par with highest quality setting, more stability on distant objects though with some visual noise
▪️Locked 60FPS overwhelming majority of the time, 'completely stable'
▪️Leverages HDR, full dynamic range/stark contrast, "breathtaking on calibrated HDR display"
▪️"Excellent" ray-tracing implementation, global illumination with some limitations
▪️Volumetric cloud simulation is "superb" with minimal breakup and excellent variation
▪️Improved weather effects, added dynamic particles and foliage
▪️In-game character models are highly detailed, 'top tier'
▪️Reflections still rely on SSR and cube maps, works well enough
▪️Still has weaknesses but "overall a stunning, evocative experience"

I remember when I saying that and many her denied it then digital Foundry also denied it and I was let down then here we are even the game looks like ps4 title very very few areas have good graphics with rt from the reviews that I saw

How the fuck can anyone take these dude seriously?

If mid tier GI and ps4 tier models are exceptional we should create a new word to define stuff like cyberpunk and delta...

Bruh... why have RTGI and don't even market it? Even Ubisoft understood the assignment, these marketing departments man smh.
Because ubisoft built the entire game around it. Every level, interior, asset, was designed with RTGI in mind.

GoY simply slapped on RT at the end, and the results are underwhelming like most cross gen games that added RTGI. Just go back this very thread and you will see me and others dismiss RTGI based on those early games. RTGI isnt some magic bullet that fixes bad practices or makes last gen assets and lighting look next gen.

That said, it's good to see at least something. It gives me hope for Sony studios. That there is someone there with a brain who realizes RT is the future and its better to start now then not at all like Kojima did with DS2. With Wolverine and Saros looking stunning, and now Ghosts looking dated but at least investing in RTGI shows that maybe Sony will end the gen strong.

Ok seeing El Analista praise it made me intrigued. Wasn't interested in this game but after his tweet I am intrigued. Will wait for his comparison video on YouTube to drop, gonn be good!!

he thought TLOU Part 1 remake was a next gen masterpiece. Compared to that garbage, ghosts looks like the matrix demo to him.

just an FYI, this guy thought Silent Hill F was just 360p (it is 1080p reconstructed to 4k) and completely killed the game on twitter. Cost probably hundreds of thousands of sales. He's a moron.

You are totally right with that last part, beyond right even. I'm really glad that the studios are at least investing in the core tech and will scale it up over time. Asset quality can be scaled and improved with time, missing features and tech debt in the engines however? That is not fixed easily.

Translation: Ghost of Yotei has some of the best art in video game history. I know, that's a big statement, but believe me, I don't say it lightly.

Edit: check his YouTube channel he has started dropping comparisons. Saw one for ps5 vs ps5 pro right now!

I mean, it is some of the best as far as realistic depiction of Natural beauty.
I think it's up there with rdr2.

We can shit on the fidelity but they always had the art design and scene composition locked in for that type of scenery.

Shadows is nowhere near as evocative.

All of this is news to me lol

Do not be shocked, he managed to trick the English community very well unfortunately but in Spain we now is he a fraud, he pretends he knows technical stuff but he doesn't and he has proven this countless times. I still remember when a developer of his own game called him in out for wrong information and he started arguing with him in Twitter until he realized that he was the developer.

I dont understand why companies keep giving him games and keys for games, he dont deserve it

Yeah, it looks too cartoony, dull and grey. Just terrible imo. Watched the entire DF video. 25 minutes and there were only a handful of scenes in good bright sunlight conditions. Most of the time its either cloudy with muted colors or straight up dark skies that bring down the entire presentation.

Yeah I agree with you, I don't know how the fuck these character models are "top-tier", felt like I was gaslit by John Linneman here lol.

This is similar to GTA5, PS3/PS4 assets with RTGI slapped on top, Of course it looks better but it's not even close to GTA6:

Indirect lighting in what DF showed in their video is still lacking in GoY, it's some limited version of RTGI. Assets quality of Tsushima was barely better than some PS3 games (models, textures), with GoY we get to PS4 levels or slighty above...

Game looks ok (good with HDR) but it's below best looking Sony games this gen, much below third parties. AC Shadows is also 1080p with RTGI on Pro and looks much better.

It's as nice as it was when GoT first released.

I look at some of the GoT screenshots I captured and they just don't impress to the same level anymore. It kind of aged badly actually, now that we've seen what's possible with current hardware.

Interesting, never knew this. I still enjoy his videos though but didn't know all that about him. Is he Spanish? Thought he was Mexican!!

This review have better look of game overall on rt pro mode

These gta pics looks surprisingly good for such an old game.

He's fine mostly, but you cannot say that a game runs at 360p and then not retract it. SHF is probably never going to get a sequel now because all the rage baiters and grifters on youtube and twitter took his findings and went nuts. game was DOA.

He was so consistently inconsistent with his pixel countings at the start of the generation that his videos were banned here. we were still allowed to post it in other threads as long as we werent using his pixel counting stats but hes been wrong for a good five years now.

Jeez that's some bs man. He literally ruined lives, not cool at all. He deserves to get called out on his bs. I hate it when there are no repercussions to your actions.

Ok I watched the DF video about Yotei. I criticised the game from trailers. A lot. In order to maintain a fair personality and be just, I'd like to say a few things.

First of all, RT addition is good. Even if its very basic, it is a good direction, I agree with SlimySnake SlimySnake on that. They should follow RT direction as a first party studio and improve themselves. But as seen in the video, the RT implementation is really basic.

And even with RT, the game really seems flat. Flat, flat, flat. I know the first game wanted to be a picturesque game and that was an art choice, respect that. But here they used nearly all of the same assets. Come on man! This is your first native PS5 game. How come after 5 years you can still use the same assets? This is even so evident in John's video where walking clipping problem section. Really COME ON MAN! Same animation usage/problem persistent after 5 years!!?? When we criticise Sucker Punch about laziness, we are talking about this. These small bits accumulate and the end result seen as a DLC.

Addition: I forgot draw distance. Draw distance is good but the middle far points still seem lacking details.

But the sound mix is really good. Really really good. In recent years I always pay attention to sound mix of every game and this game seems top notch. Also I'm an advocate of playing games in their original language but if one day I play this game on PC, I'll definitely use Japanese voices.

If I wrap up, the game still feels DLC even with the addition of RT. Maybe they will add more RT functions on PC release in the future. But I doubt the end result will be much different.

Honestly every Sony 1st party sequel gets great scores whether it's great or not. Look at Horizon Forbidden West, Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarok, etc.. etc.. where the sequel gets a higher review average from critics but is considered a disappointment by most fans.

We'll see if Yotei is different, but I can't say I'm holding my breath.
Nah, they're all awesome games, for sure not 10/10s and a little too safe, but they still deserved high scores. Two reviewers I listen reguraly compared Yotei to Shadows, which they also thought was mediocre (6/10). After playing Yotei, they now think the Ubisoft game is even worse ;d

tbf it's really not that hard to be a better game than shadows, which i also score a 6.

Games have been overrated all gen. just look at Silksong and Hades 2 scoring like BOTW, RDR2, and other all time games despite literally being copy pasta DLCs with zero ambition and effort put in to give them at least an AC1 to AC2 caliber leap.

Halo infinite is at 87. Mario Kart 8 and Bananza over 90. DS2 at 90. Everything thats only somewhat decent from these major developers gets high scores. It could be because reviewers tend to review games they like so naturally they are biased.

I take out at least 10 full points from each of these games, sometimes even 20. Regardless of the publisher. Critics have gone way too soft.

Critics have gone way too soft with those who don't deserve such a high rating and harsh with those that deserve a higher rating, like Cronos, it's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's higher than 70s or whatever it has now.

As expected, a game can look as underwhelming as can be, and DF will ignore all its shortcomings and fawn over the few strong points and claim it's a technical showcase. It's been happening all through the gen they have dropped standards so low that as long as the game is a solid 60fps, it's pretty much guaranteed that DF will give you heavy praise.

It's kind of ridiculous how far from being an actual critic they have become. Back in the PS4 gen and especially the PS3 gen, they went very deep into tech and gave equal attention to shortcomings and strong points, but now all they care about is getting on the good side of devs and fostering toxic positivity. The game has low tier assets even by ps4 standards and the textures are straight ps3.5 tier and im still trying to find these top tier character models(compared to what exactly) just slapping a mid rtgi implementation dosent make this a technical showcase....the saving grace of the game is art but even that cant hide the low detail outside of fixed lighting conditions and areas where the vegetation hides the assets and textures.

I mean these are the same guys who were troping the TLOU2 PS5 remaster as some technical powerhouse, as if a straight res increase is some epic achievement and also were gushing over ff7 remake completely ignoring the atrocious assets. I'm genuinely curious, have they even criticised the visuals of any recent big studio game outside of framerate issues?

It'd be nice if all 1P PS games would offer a 40fps mode at this point. Just seems a no brainer. Being forced to choose between 30fps near 4K and 60fps at 1080p feels like too much of a binary choice. I'll choose 30fps for the higher fidelity, but 40 is a major step up in relative fluidity and ease on the eye while not forfeiting too much image quality; and is by far the preferable choice for me for any third person title.

I just refuse to game at ~1080p native pixels on a big 4K display, despite what everyone says about many performance modes in that resolution region, every eg. I've tried looks like crap with a 1080p base resolution, whether using an upper tier temporal solution or even some ML solutions. I remember everyone egging on the 60fps performance mode on Ratchet & Clank saying it looks amazing, but the second I turned it on everything looked like smeared arse compared to the quality mode.

If they're doing 1728p RT at 30fps, then ~1440p RT at 40fps is a reasonable expectation.
