GRAVITY Trailer

When I saw the trailer in theaters before Pacific Rim, some guy in the row behind me yelled "Well that sucks, not gonna see that one!" Dude thought everyone was there to listen to his comedy show or something because he was yelling comments like the whole time.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing this.

Fuck me this looks so good.

Only seeing the trailer in IMAX 3D was one of the best cinematic experiences I had this year. Can't wait.

This is I hesitate to go to theaters. I prefer to wait for DVDs to be able to watch them in my own controlled setting. I'm basically a continual year behind movies now.

Gravity is the type of movie that'll probably drag me to theaters, though. Some are just meant to be experienced on imax....

You're selling it short. They apparently had to develop all kinds of robotics to make this possible. It's why people like Cameron and DelToro says the movie is years ahead of its time.

There are probably other, more complex shots in the movie, with less CGi on the characters, but the scene from the trailer, we see several times, moments with the characters in the suit shot from behind (so with the face not visible) which means is 100% cgi.
Now i'm sure they took Sandra Bullock and shot all that in green screen in one take, but when everything but the faces is CGi, it looks less impressive, to me, than an extended take with a real set and 200 extras walking around.
In the first instance you can theoretically cut and paste if something goes wrong, and you can adjust every little detail, since you're creating it in post production.
In the second case sure you can retouch stuff in post, but you're still much more tied to what you actually shoot, in that one take.

But maybe i'm missing something here.
I wouldn't mind some clarification.

That single shot is part of a 17 minute take, if I'm not mistaken

Nice.

Are there any other directors who incorporate long single shots like Cuaron? It's seriously some masterful stuff.
Children of Men is surealy among the most impressive.

Other good examples, from the top of my head:

Russian Ark (the whole movie is one take).
Touch of Evil.
The Protector.
HardBoiled.
Carlito's Way.
Old Boy.
The Mirror.

And then of course Bela Tarr uses a lot of extended shots.

Not sure if I want to see this. The premise is scary as hell, but I have a feeling this is a high budget Buried or Open Water in space. If I'm right I'm not interested at all.

I cannot believe that people are complaining about this clip/trailer. It's stunning. 90 seconds of auteur driven, cinematic splendour.

Poor CGI? Puffy spacesuits? I'm baffled. This clip is seriously impressive. Is it aimed above some people's heads or where they expecting something else?

Read on Faraci's Twitter that the industry buzz is that this is one of the best films of the year, whereas Elysium is a tad disappointing.

Heard the same thing. I hear Elysium "doesn't deliver". Make of that what you will.

Two more:

- Hitchcock's Rope: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rope_(film)

Sure, not an effects film, of course, but I was very impressed with how well staged and acted everything was in each ~10 minute long take. Also maybe the first of its kind?

- Whedon's Serenity opening shot.

What the fuck at that trailer man, I saw 3 times in a row and got goosebumps the 3 times.

Seriously this will be tense as all hell.

That trailer was part of a 5 minute clip they showed at Comic-Con.
They cut the best parts out. There's so much more to it.

In the panel, some guy asked Cuaron how hard is it to film these long takes. "It's not hard for me at all, it's hard for everyone else that works with me."

The scene in Goodfellas where Henry takes Karen out on their first real date.

A scene in Kill Bill vol 1 right after the bride gets to the House of Blue Leaves.

I've never seen it, but I've read that Atonement has a very long tracking shot in it.

The 2nd trailer look incredible fake to me. The camera is too perfectly choreographed. Too many mysterious light sources to lite the scene perfectly.

I was going to say "like Star Wars prequels fake", but this is faker.

I think drowning is a contender but yeah, I agree w/ you.

I think that with drowning you do not even have the chance of thinking about the positives and negatives in your life. The things you would have done differently, or how much you always wanted to say that you love your family and wife.

You can when you slowly die in space. That alone makes it the most terrible death for me.

Major spoiler:

it wasn't really filmed in space

Yeah, great point.

Worst slow death, but with an incredible view.
