GRAVITY Trailer

Hype. I agree about the media blackout, lets do it. I don't want to spoil any plot developments beyond the trailer. God I love this premise. It reminds me of the story of the commander of the iss (Chris Hadfield) quote about his space walk, he said something like: " I was in my spacesuit, I held on to the ISS with one hand and let myself hang, seeing an abyss of nothing for billions of miles away below me, I would highly reccomend it. "

He should have let go and embrace the sweet abyss.

I had this movie painted completely different, I thought it was gonna be the more fantastical kind of science fiction, set in the far off future or something. Looks okay I guess, wonder where the movie goes after what the trailer showed.

Same here, and kind of dissappointed about it, but this still looks super interesting. Someone on my Twitter feed said 127 Hours in space, getting that vibe.

I do remember the reports that Bullock has been asked not to wear any makeup in this film. Cuaron trying to make this ultra-realistic.

1: There's no sound in space.

2: There's absolutely no fucking way she can realistically be rescued. She's either dead, or she survives due to complete and utter bullshit.

Glad you've managed to judge the movie entirely by 90s worth of footage.

FYI, I'm pretty sure
the rest of the film follows her drifting hopelessly through space.

Why do I get the feeling that the sound in space thing is just another Hollywood trope. People apparently have a problem with the fact that there isn't sound in space.

As I said, she either dies or survives due to complete bullshit. She's in fucking space. Is that not a fair judgment?

If she just drifts hopelessly through space, she's going to die. What about my statement was incorrect?

I also painted this movie as something entirely different in my head, but I could not be more pleased to be wrong.

Am I remembering incorrectly that this opens with a 20+ minute one-shot? If the entire disaster sequence is done in one take, this is going to be nuts.

IMAX 3D. Day one. Take me away, Cuaron.

I think it's been confirmed from test screenings that the opening shot IS 16 minutes and that the film features a ton of long takes throughout. Only 156 shots are in the total film, reportedly. For comparison, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness has 2,120.

This shit is going to be so fucking immersive in IMAX 3D. Hot damn, I can't wait.

Huh? It's IS a Hollywood trope. And yes people do since they want the movie to feel authentic? I am confused by you confusion.

I'm down with seeing only bullock on screen floating through space for a third of the movie.

I will however, get up and leave the theater if Cuaron decides that flashbacks are a thing.

Not confusion, I was just musing. People complaining about the sound in space thing are, while completely correct, are fighting a losing battle. Just a silly thing to nitpick at this point given all the space movies with sound.

Agreed. Though, I have enough faith in Cuaron to think that he won't try to pull that shit in this. If anything, all the long takes should be enough to prevent this from being a frenetic nightmare like 127 Hours.

Is this a remake of Bradbury's "Kaleidoscope"?

Pretty much go in expecting them both to die.

But especially Bullock. If this is modern day, there's no fucking way she can survive. We couldn't get a ship into space soon enough.

True. But maybe this is the movie where an absence of sound could add to the atmosphere and desperation. They could keep the talking since its between pressurized suits. Some sound effects during the meteorite accident since the rumblings and vibrations would conduct sound (although they would have to be in contact with it) idk man it would be tough, but MAYBE with a good score it would be good. COME TO THINK OF IT. I think the meteor scene would be INCREDIBLE if all you could hear is clooney and bullock screaming while the ISS is getting blasted away in silence. It would give everyone huge cinema boners and science boners as a boner bonus since everyone and their dog now knows that there is no sound in space, I think people might appreciate it.

Little to no sound in the movie would definitely add to the atmosphere, I think.

Even then I have no clue on how this movie will unfold and that unfounded rumor that sculli posted doesn't sway me at all.

I need to know what happens.

I hope to god they think of a few more things than the logical conclusion to that last shot, but nothing to improbable. Which . . . will be the most difficult part.

Why do I get the feeling that this thread is going to be a good source of crow once Bullock surprises everybody and hits it out of the park?

No crow from me. It's Cuaron. I'm sure it will be great. I just can't stand her. It's not even exactly that she's a bad actress, she just annoys the shit out of me for some reason.

Oh no I quite agree. I wish it wouldn't have sounds, but people are stoooopppidd and ruin the good things for us :(

While I think this would be awesome in theory, I can see it being very difficult to pull off effectively over the course of 2 hours when there is very little else going on.

The movie wouldn't work without sound

It could. If the plot is Sandra floating by herself for a decent portion near the end of the movie there still would be "sound" , like her rusting around in her suit and panting an talking to Clooney. She is in SPACE after all. anyways there isn't going to be a lot of things around her to make noise in the first place, so I don't think there is too much potential sound effects to be missed out on. The main discussion is that if there should be explosion noises and stuff during the initial accident. I for one think it would benefit tremendously by only being able to hear select things. It would add to the awe of the moment while letting the audience know that yes, this is a goddam realistic space movie for once, this can happen at any moment to our astronauts up there now. I don't think its too hard to imagine the movie getting away with it.

trailer is pretty crappy, and I really dont like the idea of Bullock in this role

but director + interesting concept = im still there

Pretty much what I was thinking boiled down to a Hollywood couple instead of astronauts.

It's a shit premise for a film even if the story is terrifying. (Which it is)
