Gregg Popovich on the election: "I'm just sick to my stomach."

I'm not a fan of the game of basketball, but I'll be damned if it's not the most socially and politically conscious professional sports league out there. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the players and coaches who are speaking their minds.

Compare the NBA to the NFL right now and it's blatantly night and day. The way the NBA treats its players, fans, and media makes the NFL look (literally) many generations behind.

Popovich has always been a very witty man so I'm not surprised by his recent statements at all; A very intelligent person.

Saw this this morning in my local paper (yes, i still read those) and I couldn't be more prouder to be a San Antonioan. While I've never been a Spurs fan (Go Sonics....fml), Popovich is a class act. I'm just really glad to see him speak out. Along the lines of what Astrolad said, his words will carry great impact simply because of the source. He isn't the editorial of NYTimes. Or Jacobian. He's the leader of one of the great sport franchises of our generation and if his remarks can penetrate and cause some reflection among supporters of Trump otherwise not inclined to listen then he will have done an even greater service.

To talk about Third Way Democrats in a time like this is pretty low.

The NBA's got good people and good fans.

I'm actually surprised the NFL isnt more republican leaning than that.

I'm only surprised Popovuch said anything considering his disdain for talking to the Media

The part about people being willing to just move on and pretend everything's normal now that Trump is president-elect rings so true; all this relativism of what he said ("Maybe he didn't mean it, give him a chance!") is beyond crazy. And the "evil" mainstream media of course is totally moving along with it. Not sure if they are mistaking that for patriotism or something but it looks pretty disgusting from an outsider's perspective.

Pop's disdain for the media ia mostly in in game interviews and in asking stupid questions. Everyone says if you ask him something real at a press conference, he will answer it thoughtfully.

Asking a dude something like "hey your team gave 20 3 pointers and you lost, what should you have done different" is a waste of anyones time.

Awesome write up. I agree with it 120%, specially the part about people telling us to calm down, everything will get better, lets unite. Nah, I'm good. I'm not doing that with this man, I know the true Trump and its a disgusting person.

Good to know, as someone who doesn't watch the Spurs I never see that.

To their credit the minute they had a chance to get rid of him the did not blink and did it immediately.

NBA is killing it in the Silver era.

Nate Silver is the best commissioner in sports and it isn't even close. He's also 100x better than Stern was at the end.

For a coach of the most boring team to watch in basketball he at least has his heart in the right place.

Fuck the spurs, tho

The Spurs are so hard to root against sometimes. Pop might be the best coach of all time, so it's awesome that he's so socially involved in the right way.

Kawhi Leonard is one of the best players in the league. Easily top 10 -- if not top 5. Get out here! (haha)

Kawhi's house is probably empty and has just a blanket bucket of water and a basketball on the floor. He doesn't eat he just exist for basketball.

Hahaha. He doesn't seem like a very showy guy at all so what you've stated is probably a bit more accurate than some would expect.

I'm glad we're finally starting to realize evangelicals in America are disgusting hypocrites who deserve no sympathy and no respect. They are all talk and this election proves it.

I'm a black man who's going to go to his (predominately) white church tomorrow for service, down here in Texas. I'm going to stand in a room full of people that probably cast their vote for Donald Trump. I'm going to stand in a room full of people that decided to ransom my freedoms and dignity for their own benefit. Decided to chase after boogie men like "Religous Liberty" even though our own Pastor preached against it.

I don't even think they can see that this election and how evangelicals acted in it is going to be their version of the child abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. Both sides chose to circle the wagons and protect their institutions at the expense of core values that people of faith share with everyone.

Why my man? Not trying to criticize but why even surround yourself with people like that? There are many ways to worship and many churches.

Fantastic comments, it's been infuriating hearing people try to ask for calm and let's wait and see if he does all the actual terrible things he's said first before being mad. It's really highlighted to me how many people I know who actively don't give a damn about how minorities are talked to or treated.

I agree with everyone in here commenting on how impressed they are with the NBA and especially Popovich. I think it has a lot to do with why I very much prefer the NBA to the NFL now.

I used to love football, both college and professional. But the rampant corruption in the college game and the increasingly transparent racism of the average NFL fan has driven me away.

Basketball is also a global sport and football is not. That and the fact that black men have much more power in the NBA explains the gulf between the two when it comes to values. And as someone who understands why globalism was instituted in the first place (to prevent mankind from destroying each other) it's understandable why I feel much more at home at basketball games these days.

If I were to give you a simple reason in one word, it'd be because of community. I live in the burbs of Dallas. My city is 95% white, I was one of 4 black people in my graduating class. I'm a small island is a sea of white. They're my neighbors, public servants, friends, and congregation. I see the way white women clutch their purses whenever my dad walks past, ask me if I "live around here" if some white woman sees me and my brother playing outside, the looks I get if a wear my Obama shirt. Their behavior doesn't surprise me. Racism has a new form and still rests comfortably under social norms around here.

I get all that. But I know I'm one part in the bigger movement of change within people. People don't listen to people, they listen to people they know. Empathy is a powerful weapon that works much better with proximity. That goes both ways. They can get me and I can get them. Even though they may have ultimately voted for Trump, I was there throughout the decision process. These people were gutted about Trump. But the conservative momentum built up in Texas way of life (combined with fairly weak tools for viewing the political process through neutral eyes) was too much in the end. I'm upset now and probably will be for a long time. But I know we get be better and the church I attend has a great structure and leadership in place to do it.

That's why I kind of bristle at the "It not our job to educate ______" threads. As a Christian, that's exactly my job.

Please, spare me the "Insulting people doesn't get us anywhere" bullshit. You've either been living under a rock or you're not from America and don't know what you're talking about.

Yup the ones that voted for Trump are full on bigots.

I loss a massive amount of respect for each one of them. I don't bother with their bullshit on FB anymore. Not worth the headache.
