The problem with the critics saying "why are you applying 2025 culture to these pictures" is that with certain HR and financing choices meritocracy was killed.

The bright spot is these types of teams still exist and still make the biggest splashes in the video game industry because they are cheap well made and disruptive.

I've still got a little bit of sympathy for these guys. I consider them victims. Perpetrators are activist reporters, deranged surgeons and mentally unwell psychologists. If the West ever gets things back on the rails. the early 20th century will be looked back on with more horror than the "lobotomy cures depression" era. We who sat by and allowed to happen are not fully without blame either. It's just taking advantage of mentally unwell people for financial gain, political gain and all-around sadism. I don't think anyone disagrees about the surgeons needing to be jailed, but what will be interesting is the results of the psych evals they get to prison. I'm willing to bet not a single one is truly well intentioned.

Incredible thread, love to see the passion from all of these teams that you can see in the photos. Funny to me how even the Nintendo pics were probably viewed as extremely casual at the time, compared to all of the corporate wideshots we are seeing in gigantic dev teams today. That spirit is still alive in indie games.
