found a problem here:
GT4 does not support 1080i during the whole game, when you back to menu,title or map, the resolution will return to 480p/i, high solution only in gaming only.
some one already complain this will really damage their HDTV.

That's the only thing I saw that "debunks" the rumor on that board, but it still says that 1080i is in-game. I find it very hard to believe that the menus wouldn't be 1080 if the game was. I don't believe this news, PS2 can't handle this at a decent framerate.

I read from a Taiwanese gamer that has bought GT4 (Taiwan is earlier than Hong Kong this round) said that the game supports 1080i and 480p in game.

I am shocked to read that it does 1080i in game. It is a pity that I cannot get it earlier as they cannot sell it earlier since KY is in Hong Kong.

The PS2 has 4MB of VRam. A 16bit half frame buffer (1920x540) takes 2073600 bytes.
So two buffers won't fit. However, most TV cannot display 1920 pixel horizontally, so you could halve the horizontal resolution and fit two buffers and have ~2megs left for textures.
Of course, you will have to sort your polys since there is no space for a Z buffer, but for a game like GT4 that shouldn't be a problem. So theoretically it's possible. Yet, I doubt very much they actually implemented something like that.

Technically it could have (maybe), in 16bit color mode. (1440x540x2) x 2 buffers = 3.11MB.

Not sure how Z buffers plays into this, that could throw this off.

I'm guessing 1080i support works in photo mode, which would be nice by itself.

Yes it does indeed support 5.1ch surround, progressive scan 480p and hivision 1080i. The official site says it and if people got the game early and also confirm it, I see no reason to doubt any longer.

Technically, it can be anything from 1280, 1440, 1920 or any arbitrary number for horizontal resolution. No one limits the width to those specified, it can be 960 or even lower.

Heh ! Reading about its 480p and 1080i support in game is driving me insane that I cannot get it until 28/Dec because KY is in Hong Kong (for the GT selling ceremony), damn !

1080i is totaly true. You can choose normal, progressive(480p),
Hivision(1080i) at option menu. Also Splender,Contrast,Shade(Tone),
Darkness can change.

The Taiwanese guy (from a Taiwanese forum that I've read) said 480p or 1080i are in-game, the menu is 480i.

I will know the truth when I had it on Tuesday.

Driving Force Pro + 51" widescreen + 1080i = Heaven.

GT4 is already one of the most visually impressive ps2 games, I simply can't believe they pulled this off for gameplay.

Hell, I would go crazy if they just implented 480p for gameplay and then 1080i for replays.

Yes, there are just a few. The thing is, most of the XBOX games that DO support 1080i are simply not very impressive looking. I've yet to play a current gen console game in 1080i that featured visuals as impressive as GT4. That's why I can hardly believe...

Dragon's Lair looks really sharp, the game is horrible though. MX Unleashed looks good in 1080i, but the 30fps brings it down. GT4 at 60fps in 1080i would simply own EVERY single Xbox game graphically IMO, end of story.

I still DON'T believe this is true for in-game however. I need more confirmation, I refuse to get my hopes up because as soon as I do it will be debunked. This will be downright incredible if true. I completely forgive PD for not delivering online play if this is true.
